I think what they were getting at was... if there's one person who doesn't like them then yes, they'll probably be looking to get rid of them. Thing is, on the highly unlikely chance they want to give him away, you're one person among many who would really love to have him. Chances are that person is going to want to give everyone a fair chance at him. If everyone just came to the board and preemptively claimed the villagers they wanted, it wouldn't be a giveaway anymore, it'd be a sweat shop as we all labored to fill everyone's request for handouts. xD
It makes me tired just thinking about it. ;~;
That being said, I strongly recommend putting who you're looking for in your sig and just being social in general. People are really friendly and helpful around here and I've had people approach me to give me villagers listed in my sig several times. :'3 I love this community.

Well, my guess is they're super lucky.
They need to be online at the time the giveaway happened and refreshed every second.
I prefer to trade for high demand villager. A lot easier than waiting for give away.

I think giveaways are not something to depend on to get all your dream villagers. Luck is a huge factor. So keep trading, but you might get a free animal!
It also depends on if the person who has a giveaway village or whatnot is taking reservations. Doesn't hurt to ask. :3
