The only use for this that I can see is possibly it would let you get back to your house/tent faster if you are on the other side of the map.
Other than that, I don't get it either.

It may be a feature for younger players that get lost easily or don't know the way around the controllers or menu, so they may ask their parents to go back to "mainland" (so to speak), and the parent can just easily click on that app and hand the console back to the kid. That's just my guess (because I don't really have kids so I can't speak from experience lol)

Holy Hell! The game is so much more than I expected. The museum is mind blowing! The graphics are much more polished with the right amount of contrast. Terraforming your island is WOW, sure didn?t see that coming. I prefer holidays happen in game not as free update. I didn?t see whether we will be able to customize windows or hang lights. As of the Direct video, there doesn?t appear to have as many shops as New Leaf did, but hopefully, that will change as the game progresses.

There's looking to be so much customization it's now starting to feel like the real question is: What CAN'T we do?
Maybe we can also use it while on a Island Tour? Kinda like on the online island in NL where you could press the "go home" button if you wanted to.

Honestly, it was amazing and much more creative than I ever thought it'd be and I feel like there is more we don't know yet. I do dislike a lot of the unnecessary barriers they're creating with save data and so on, but I genuinely think this could top New Leaf as a game. Just show me Tangy and Daisy now pls.

Oh, another use I thought of for this - a faster way to get home so you can make room in your pockets. That'd be nice for sure.
Speaking of that though - they did bring up that houses have storage (something that it sounds like tents don't have), but I wonder what the storage limits for that are. The Welcome Amiibo update for New Leaf added more storage, but I still ran into storage problems thanks to how many non-reorderable items there were that made me want to hoard them.

Doesn't mean it's not there. We'll just have to wait. I do hope that it's in though, or that we have some other way to see others' islands without having to be specifically invited. It was nice to use it to get design ideas.

Somebody may have mentioned this already, but I just rewatched it with my boyfriend and I’m 99% I saw the daily golden spot on the ground may be back??? There was at the very least SOME sort of golden spot on the ground! I do not have a timestamp as I can’t find it again but it was on the left side of the screen, somewhat obscured by some trees!
it was amazing. the museum is GORGEOUS. i'm looking forward to terraforming and to meeting the new villagers. however i'm still wondering whether there will be curtain and light customizations in the player's home. in the direct, the curtains/blinds shown seem to be standard ones and the player's home was shown in only the morning/afternoon/early evening when the sun is still up..
also i like how the player has the freedom to choose where buildings and vendors plot their land, but i'm a bit concerned about overcrowding. assuming there are 10 villagers minimum, 5+ vendors & buildings, 8 player houses maximum, and outdoor customization items, it seems like a lot

All my questions were answered, except one, and I am happy with the answers. The unanswered question is, "How many letters can I use in my island name, and character name?"
I am thrilled that I will be able to invite my best Animal Crossing pal, Hopper, to my island since I have his amiibo card. Also I am over-the-moon thrilled with the idea of terraforming the landscape (making new waterfalls and so on).
