Tokyo 2020-your thoughts!

Okay so I take it back a bit, my parents had it on tv yesterday so I watched for a bit here and there. We watched cycling and it was really cool to see them go. That's a crazy far distance! I know they train, but it's still crazy to see the power they have. Major kudos.

I like certain sports at the Olympics (namely rugby), but hosting them in the midst of a pandemic, especially with so few Japanese vaccinated, seems like a bad idea.

Obviously they've gone ahead with the games so they can't be cancelled now, but I worry Japan will only enter a state of crisis because of this. And the pandemic already diminished any economic incentive the country was going to get from hosting the games.

i wish they weren't on at like 2 am but I've still been watching, looking forward to the track and field events

I'll start off by saying this is definitely not a great year to be doing the Olympics. Obviously with the pandemic still raging on and the cases rising in Japan, with low vaccination rates to boot, it does leave all sorts of people at a higher risk of catching COVID over there because of it. Really, they should've been cancelled, but considering (to my knowledge) it would've cost more to cancel them than to run them as-is (although it's still stupid expensive no matter what, thanks IOC), it's not really a surprise they're going ahead.

All that said, as a sports fanatic, I do generally like the Olympics and watch what I can of it. I'm a bigger fan of the Winter Olympics than the Summer ones, but there's still plenty of Summer events I enjoy watching. Tokyo being over half a day ahead for me means most of the events are happening while I'm asleep and I'm only able to watch around 4 or so hours live, which is a pain, but I still try and make do. Despite the conditions they're happening in, I'm definitely getting more and more into it as the days go on and enjoying the success the Canadian athletes are having (particularly in swimming, lol).

im pretty bothered by the womens beach volleyball being fined for wanting to wear tight volleyball shorts instead of bikini bottoms. its ridiculous they dont have more uniform options when the men can wear loose shorts. seeing the teams side by side is shocking and i cant help but think people just want to see the womens bodies rather than watch these top athletes compete. its degrading and i cant believe this is still happening. its absolutely horrible. the person in charge will apparently see about trying to change the rule?? whatttttt cmon seriously? try? its obviously objectifying and messed up. i understand some athletes may prefer the smaller uniforms, but it shouldnt be mandatory

Ok I was very confused at the thread date (2013?? omg) but now that the Olympics are happening, here are some thoughts...

I feel really bad for the unvaccinated people in Tokyo who were worried about these games taking place. I think the first priority would have been the safety of the host country's own citizens but it seems that money comes first... I honestly think the Olympics should have been skipped until the pandemic is over or until all people had access to vaccination. Also not a fan of how hosting the Olympics negatively impacts the host city.

I'm located in the States (oh boy!) and NBC's coverage is ABYSMAL (in my opinion!!). No focus on sports outside of ones U.S. athletes are competing in, and just really biased coverage overall. Also too many backstories about the same 3-4 athletes.

i'm not usually big on the olympics. i definitely prefer the winter ones, but i watch what i can of the summer ones since i'm usually on holiday when they air and BBC is one of the few channels available wherever we stay. this year, they've happened before i'm on holiday, so anything i've heard about it has been through tumblr. that being said, i'm actually currently watching the full final for the men's 10m synchronized diving on catch-up (yes, i'm days behind) and will probably check out the men's mountain-biking and women's gymnastics final afterwards. then maybe horse-riding, if it's already happened. (i'm not as keen on dressage.) i'm actually really proud of how well team GB has performed thus far, and the commentators for the diving event have been really supportive and appraising of the other teams -- it's nice to hear.

that being said, this event is... bogged in controversy. from hosting it amidst a pandemic to banning afro-friendly swimming caps to the female uniform fines/protests (which is to say i agree with the protests and disagree with the fines; men and women's uniform styles shouldn't be gender-locked for things like volleyball and gymnastics) to the US athlete (i forget which sport) who has to have, like, a safety plan or something in place due to a history of sexual assault against women? what is going on lmao.

I understand that they didn't want to delay the olympics any further but I agree with what others have said that it seems like a bad idea when cases in Japan are rising again. But it's all about money. I probably won't be watching much of the olympics. Partly because of timezones and partly because I've never been a big summer olympics fan, I think in general I prefer the winter events. I might try to check out some of the badminton matches that's probably my favourite summer sport to watch.

So far I have seen a little bit of some of the swimming events, although my biggest takeaway from watching that was just that Team USA has super creepy face masks.

WHY does it look so creepy to me

I'm not much into it, but my fiancé likes to watch it and he's fairly enjoying it.
All I'm hearing about is the scandals, like the guys that didn't want to fight someone from Israel or whatever it was.
Honestly I find that so lame of the people refusing to fight him. Sports have nothing to do with religion, politics or what so ever.
I really do hope they will never be allowed to participate in this kind of event again, as it's disgusting to react like that.

Alright, the Olympics are controversial and in many ways a detriment to the host countries and athletes and certain people, but in spirit, I still applaud the hard work and the message of a world united and sportsmanship, and I still look forward to what they can improve upon and become in the future.

Here is a fan video I found on Reddit that showed clips of the Tokyo sports events to the Smash Bros Melee theme:

So inspirational!

as an Australian that had to get up at night to watch previous olympics,, Toyko was amazing! It was on in the afternoon and it was super easy to watch most sports quickly. I saw so many cool new sports and Australians are great at swimming so we got alot of medals there. one of Australia's best year yet!

also with the pandemic, they handled it so well and I don't think it is that much of a problem, which is good

As an anime fan and an Asian, I'm glad to have heard they used LiSA's Gurenge (Demon Slayer opening) in the Tokyo Olympics. lmao It's like hearing The Imperial March at a president's inauguration or something. lmao Just excites the geek in me, even though I've never seen that anime (and probably never will, since I don't like shounen anime...).
