Tokyo 2020-your thoughts!

that's great for Japan, I don't care where it's held. I just want to watch Football.

Tokyo trains are crowded enough, but expecting even more people visiting due to the games will be a nightmare for the businessmen who are trying to get home during rush hour. @_@

You might think that, but in London last year they hyped the olympics so much, and warned everyone that it would be SO crowded that everyone left and London was almost deserted :p

I'm resurrecting this old thread because the interactive google doodle / game today was such a cute celebration of the Tokyo Olympic games right now:

I know there's a lot of controversy around the Olympic committee and holding the games during the pandemic, but I am still excited for the opening ceremony and games I'll be watching this evening. :)

Yeah I'm surprised they're going on with it still with covid but life's gotta move on at some point right?
I typically don't care much about the Olympics and don't really watch them but it's nice they still exist! Good luck to all people taking part!

I hate the Olympics. They're a financial drain wherever they go, and they cause a lot of problems for residents of the place they inflict themselves on. This year we've seen transphobia, racism, misogyny and them pushing it forward in an extremely serious pandemic while Tokyo is in a state of emergency.

I never watch the Olympics, and I hate them even more this year. I wish they'd be cancelled.

So I really love watching the Olympics, I mainly just watch swimming and gymnastics though so I wouldn't say I am a huge avid fan. However this year I don't really think they should be happening because we are still in a pandemic and on top of that Japan isn't doing too great when it comes to COVID cases and I feel like I remember reading/hearing that they don't have a lot of people vaccinated in their country yet. Honestly I would have been fine with skipping the Olympics this year and waited until 2024.

Usually I enjoy watching the Olympics, but imo they should have been skipped this year and the next one be held in 2024. COVID and everything else is making this year’s a lot more tense and difficult to host.

Also, yay. Another thread dug up with another one of my posts in it. I’m convinced by now that younger me was just stupid. Lol.

As a big sports fan, the Olympics have always been enjoyable to me. Sadly no Phelps or Bolt this time around but still going to try to watch as many events as possible. Streamed the Opening Ceremony live at 7am this morning at work :ROFLMAO: Go USA

In uni., there was this class where we studied the politics and planning behind the Olympics. While planning for the Olympics did significantly speed up infrastructure projects for the host city, it was also a risky and costly gamble for the nations if their venues would still be used throughout the years. Ever since then, I started liking the Olympics less.

I still like the opening and closing ceremonies though. It’s a great opportunity for countries to show off and educate the world.

I won’t say much about Tokyo’s opening ceremony because people still haven’t seen it. However, I found it to be lackluster. Damn you Covid:cautious:

ive never cared about watching the olympics tbh. i dont think they should be held during a pandemic

I personally don't follow the olympics too much but apparently, they used some video game music that originated from Japan for the opening ceremony, including some from obscure game series! There weren't any soundtracks from Nintendo, but I'm not surprised considering they love to take down videos that contain their music.

i don't care much for sports so i don't pay attention to the olympics, usually, but they definitely shouldn't have been held this year because of COVID. especially considering how few japanese citizens have been vaccinated (and i've seen both videos of protest against the olympics and citizens voicing their issues with this happening). the use of video game music is a diversion tactic to make people think "wow, japan is so cool for using video game music!" and to take focus away from the issues being raised. it's even literally called "cool japan"

I don't really follow the Olympics much to be honest. However I don't know why they're going ahead with it this year in the middle of a pandemic. Why host it when no one can get the full enjoyment out of it? Spectators can't go watch, and rightfully so considering Tokyo's COVID cases. The Olympians can't get the full experience either due to COVID restrictions, or having COVID themselves (I.e. the 80+ cases in the Olympic village). It just seems so pointless and unnecessary when you could put it off for a year or two and have the full experience.

I don't really follow the olympics but do have a lot of respect for the people participating. However, it does seem like a huge financial burden on the countries it goes to and so much money is poured into it and locals often evicted from their homes to build stadiums just to be left with those stadiums and sites being deserted and run down afterwards.

I don't know which talkshow it was but they (as a skit) build a model "olympic island", a place where they permanently had all the sites and stadiums and where the olympics would be held each time. Even though it was for comedic purpose, that sounded so much better than to move it around the world everytime. 😅

Wow this thread is old! Pretty cool! It's such a shame that COVID happened; i think if it weren't for COVID then Tokyo would have made a very memorable Olympics.

I'm personally looking forward to the Brisbane Olympics in 2032 (2031? Somewhere around there) as that is just a 1 hour train ride from where I currently live. Hopefully by then I will be living in Brisbane

I've been trying to watch some since we do have the channels for TV, but sadly they basically break for commercials every 5 minutes and wonky commenting the games so I lowkey gave up. Plus I can only watch on weekend due to timezones(stuff being nighttime or daytime here and I work not weekends so).

Weirdly enough my mum and I have just been discussing the Tokyo Olympics this year and watching a bit of it now on the TV and I can't help but feel there's something missing from it altogether. Quite a few commentators have been mentioning that there's not enough equipment to cover the games like there have been at previous Olympics and that overall the games just don't feel quite right. Personally I think they made a mistake going ahead considering the pandemic is still very much prevalent in the world and Tokyo has had a significant rise on Covid cases in recent weeks.

I live in Japan. Boy have things been a mess. So many people have been calling for them to be canceled but they just kept getting pushed through. There's been so many issues not just with COVID but also things like bigotry. Even if they would've allowed spectators I would've sold my tickets. As people have mentioned too infection rates and vaccines aren't going too well (not just because of the government but also most young people don't want it).

The government is pushing the Olympics over vaccines/keeping people safe...

On a fun note I did end up going past the surfing site the other day by accident, crazy how many tents were set up! It was a huge stretch of the beach
EDIT: I ended up walking past another in Tokyo too

I enjoy watching some of the events usually but I don't have cable and I'm not sure if any of it is available to stream on the internet or to watch over the air with an antenna.
