Is there any method to getting these stumps. I have had them show up in spots I was clearing for PWP. Do they show up after you cut down a certain amount of trees? I want to try to get the stumps in one certain area. I have 3 of them already. Thank you.

Patterns can appear on all types of trees except for beach fruit trees, (coconuts and bananas) but only certain trees can have some patterns. For example, Citrus marks and Gingko leaves are common on oak and fruit trees, and only Pine trees can have cat faces and clover marks, etc,...
If you cut down a tree with a Normal or Golden Axe a pattern will sometimes appear rarely, so it's hit or miss. If you cut down trees with a Silver Axe it will have a patterned stump every time, and will increase your chances of finding a rare mark. Also mushrooms will only grow around patterned stumps. :>

From what I know it's with the silver axe and completely random, although I've had a few with a normal axe...

You can get special tree stump patterns randomly using a normal or golden axe. If you use a silver axe, you'll get a special design everytime.

I have gotten patterns with my golden axe. Jus very random. Thank you for your help. Of to find a silver axe.

Don't think you get a pattern every time with a silver axe. The first time I got a silver axe I only got one pattern.

The silver axe is supposed to give a pattern every time.

You can get a pattern from a regular axe and a golden axe, but a golden axe will have a better chance at a pattern than a regular one.

However, to prolong the life of a silver axe, swing a regular or golden axe at the tree two times and then cut it down with a silver one to get the special stump.

I did some testing, and I found that each tree is not "destined" to produce a certain marking. I saved the game, cut down a bunch of trees and got a few markings, then reset without saving, and cut down the same trees. There weren't any repeat markings. This means that if you want a certain marked stump in a certain place, you can save the game before axing the tree down, and keep resetting until you get the marking you want. It might be considered cheating to some people, but hey, whatever. xP

Wow, I didn't know the silver axe always produced a marked stump! I would've thought the gold axe would be an upgrade in every way, including the chances of producing a marking. So that's helpful to know! :)

are you sure it was a silver axe (the ones you can only get on the island) and not a regular axe? (the regular axe does have a silver head but it isn't a silver axe) because I have gotten a pattern EVERY time I used a silver axe!
