Want Villagers to Keep Original Clothes/Furniture, Which Favors are Safe?

Actually, catching critters is safe, as others have said previously in this thread. I've been doing bug/fish catching favors for my villager since I learned that they never display them, and, sure enough, they have never displayed them.

The thing to avoid is selling bugs and fish to villagers when they ask to buy them from your inventory. Not only do they display those later, it doesn't even count as a favor for the stamp.

One thing you can do to stop a villager from wearing odd clothing, as in the clothes you give them, or you deliver, as well as gifted from other villagers, is reporting them for what they wear. They wont wear those clothes anymore.

So you can still do them favors, then return to their regular clothes by reporting them. Just something I heard. Im not sure if it degrades friendship or not, but I don't think it would.

I personally love to give random clothes, so Id never do it. But you could do that after you get the achievement.

Something possibly worth noting is what villagers display in their houses could change in future updates.

For example, there was an update a couple months ago that caused villagers to start displaying hats and glasses on shelves and countertops (previously they would put these on the floor). After the update, my villagers replaced some of their shelf items with hats and glasses I had previously gifted them.

It seems unclear what happens with the bugs and fish requests that they don't display. Do they go in their inventory and just don't get displayed? Does the game just discard them in that instant? I'm not sure.

I think it's probably unlikely that they would change this, but I was surprised when the hat/glasses change happened a year into the game, so just something to be aware of that things can change with updates.

I'd rather not have a villager's house be filled with bugs and fish but in the end, I'm not going to stress about it. I enjoy giving different outfits to see how they'd look in each one!

Reporting to Isabelle doesn’t work. It’s supposed to be only used if your villager is wearing a custom design, but even then it doesn’t work right. they temporarily change shirts but they will change back into the design later. It doesn’t work at all for hat designs.

Thanks for clearing that up for me ^^ I wasnt 100% sure it worked or not. Good to know it doesn't,

Oh my gosh!!!!! My poor villagers, I had no idea that catching them things kept them original??? This will make my gameplay 1000000 times more fun
Me either! This is game changing. I have just been denying all fish/bug request in fear of ruining their houses but obvioiusly I didn't know there was a distinction between catching for them vs selling to them.

I've noticed a pattern in the last few months of doing favors for villagers, and I may have found another "safe" one. I'd like to see if anyone else has observed the same thing.

When delivering a package from one villager to a sisterly/uchi villager, the sisterly one seems to very consistently play the guessing game when you give her the package. "What do you think is in this package?" And if you say clothes, she will always give it to you if it is, indeed, clothes, and it never goes into her inventory for her to wear. I'm not sure if she will still display furniture, since every time I can remember delivering to her, she gave me the clothes that were inside the package. ^o^;>

So, it's possible there are deliveries you can make that will guaranteed not change a villager's outfit, and possibly also their house, if they are a certain personality. But I don't know for sure if that's true yet. That's just my theory at the moment.

Has anyone else come across anything like this?
