By comfort game I mean the sort of game you play after a bad day at school/work, when moving to a new city where you don't know people, after a fight with someone, etc. Something that will take your mind off things and distract you. For me a comfort game is something I have a lot of familiarity with - games that kind of feel like 'home'.

So for me it is:
  • Final Fantasy titles
  • Dynasty Warriors or Samurai Warriors
  • Pokémon
  • The Sims 4
  • Spyro the Dragon trilogy
  • Story of Seasons titles

What are your comfort games?

My main comfort game used to be My Sims back when I had my Wii. They had a DS version, as well, but it wasn't the same. There were major differences, and I preferred the Wii version by a landslide.

Hey You Pikachu! was also a great game. I wanted to play it for so long after having played Pokémon Channel. The former requires a microphone, making it more personable. I wasn't disappointed. You wouldn't think these games would be fun, but I had fun with it myself.

At the moment, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the game that I’m playing for comfort. I have fallen asleep playing this game a few times, so it must be effective.

Other games that I have returned to often over the years are:

-Rune Factory 4

-Story of Seasons: Trio of Town

Definitely Stardew Valley. I like to spend lots of time on one playthrough with a different character and marry a different character and then take a break from the game until I’m ready to start over. Installing awesome mods like Stardew Valley Expanded have made the game stay fresh for me even after nearly a decade of playing.

Pokémon Sun and Moon specifically are another comfort game. They’re the Pokémon games I’ve replayed the most and I love going through with a new team and enjoy the charming Hawaii inspired region again.

Pokémon as a whole is my comfort game series. I always feel like a kid again when I boot up some of my old favorites.

Stardew Valley is up there as well, for obvious reasons.

Kingdom Hearts 1 is a comfort game for me as well, the music and the setting really let me feel good, and let's me reminisce on childhood innocence.

Then interestingly enough, Hades. It's fun to ransack an underworld and cause chaos to let out some stress. It helps to take my mind off of things.

Finally, Chrono Trigger (DS). I have a lot of fond memories of what was going on with my life when I played, and the music, gameplay, and the memories associated with it always made me feel so nostalgic and safe.

for me, I'd say new leaf, which is always a really nice, relaxing time! new horizons is also comforting, but usually more for when I want to decorate and do things. another comfort game is rune factory 4, which I've played so many hours of after a stressful day! and lastly probably stardew valley, I love that game so much, and the atmosphere and music always brings me a sense of peace.

There are a few for me! Pokémon White, the Animal Crossing series, Stardew Valley, and Harvest Moon: Tale of Two Towns.

The DS games I grew up playing always bring me comfort. I think it's the nostalgia for me, as it kind of heals my inner child a little? There is just SOMETHING about booting up your 3/DS to play a game you've been playing since you were a kid or teenager.

Reading some of the other replies.. I have to list a few more, lol. Kingdom Hearts also hits home for me, because my bf got me into it.. Whenever I miss him, I either play that to self-soothe, or play something else to comfort me.

Another game I've found relaxing and comforting, ONLY AT TIMES.. is Splatoon 3. Only if I'm playing with friends though >< If I'm playing alone, it's really stressful. But having a nice group of encouraging and determined friends to play with is always nice c:

I totally agree about Splatoon 3, lol. very fun when I play with friends, super stressful when I play alone (especially when I'm foolish enough to try to play ranked after a long day... I just end up frustrated and shut the game off.)

despite the DLC's tone I actually found doing challenge runs (like only using a single tone) of side order to be pretty relaxing! I know that sounds odd because of the gameplay but something about going up floor by floor is just kinda chill (minus the few times I've had to play rigorous splatzones... never again 💀)

Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing like games. They are kinda like your own little world to build up. Pokemon S/R/E really stick out in the Pokemon Franchise for me, as well as HG/SS/G/S/C. It's a little escape with little digital friends.
Though I don't play them anymore, the Crash games were also a good one I found comfort in. Spyro as well, but I still explore the old GBA Spyro games now and then.

Cozy Grove is my main comfort game right now. I've been playing it semi-regularly since earlier this year, and it's been a huge comfort and distraction for me on my bad days.

One of my favourite things about CG is its easy gameplay. It doesn't require much brain power or strategy, which is a big part of what makes it a comfort game for me. On days where my mental health and/or brain fog is particularly bad, I want to do something but I don't have the energy to do anything too exerting, or I need a distraction from my thoughts, I can boot up CG and just zone out for an hour or 2 while I fish or catch critters. I also sometimes put a show or something on for maximum distraction.

My mood is always at least a little bit better after playing, so it's definitely one of my go-to comforts in general.

When I'm in a very upset mood, I open Splatoon 2 or Splatoon 3. Not to play online or anything, though. The characters make me happy.
I can't really think of anything else that works for me.

Splatoon 3 has been a good comfort game to me, especially when playing with friends 🙂. It’s really hard to stay depressed with the catchy music and the silliness in discord chat between matches.

If my computer was hooked up and could run games, the Sims 3 would be another comfort game. I spent so many hours playing the Sims 1-3 games. i miss playing it so much.

I guess I can say Pokemon is too though not the same way as Splatoon. When I’m too tired to play splatoon but not ready to sleep, I’ve been playing Pokemon, mostly tera raids to relax.

I would have to say Pokemon doing the raids or hatching eggs. The other one is animal crossing and Disney Dreamlight vally going fishing puts me to sleep I love it

a short hike and frog detective: the entire mystery. also buddy simulator 1984 - i've not been able to do another playthrough of that yet but it do be a comfort game of mine. :]

My comfort games are animal crossing and Pokemon. I find fishing and bug catching relaxing. Trying to find new Pokemon in Violet and just exploring.
I play a lot of games for different reasons, but as far as just comfort or casual goes I would have to say that Animal Crossing is that game for me. I have to agree, it's fun to just do random things like fishing, bug catching, diving, or just daily tasks. And if I want to be a bit more ambitious I can terraform or decorate.

I can get lost in fishing and bug catching. Terraforming can be good if I have an idea in mind.

The only game I've been playing lately is Animal Crossing: New Horizons, so I'll say that. There's so much things to complete and I enjoy investing my time in that aspect.

To be honest though, playing video games in general doesn't bring me as much comfort as doing an out-of-screen activity like napping or crocheting. I was raised to believe that devices are bad for your health, so comforting myself with technology kinda irks me. You have better options, guys. :\
