Now that the Nintendo Direct focusing on the rest of 2024 and possibly the rest of the Nintendo Switch lifespan has been released, what are your hopes and guesses for what games could be released alongside the Nintendo Switch successor?

The Nintendo Switch was released on March 3, 2017. Below is Polygon's list of everything that came out on Day 1, and within the launch window (same year).

I remember having The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild before the Switch itself. I bought the game thinking I'd get my hands on a switch quickly. Although it took me nearly a month and calling/driving all over the place to finally acquire it.

Do you think any of these games could see a sequel with the Switch sequel? Which of these games did you get? Do you expect/hope the launch titles for the successor is stronger than this lineup?

I'm not good at this.

However I would guess a new Mario game at launch with a new smash brothers game following within a year. (ultimate will likely be around 7 years old when the next console releases).

I don't expect Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It'll probably be a new game entirely. Unless they suddenly break tradition, it's been one Mario Kart game per console so far.

I would love to see The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD/ Twilight Princess HD finally ported at some point.

I'd also love to see the following games:
  • Fire Emblem Awakening Port
  • Xenoblade Chronicles X
  • New Fire Emblem game in general
  • Astral Chain 2
  • Chrono Trigger
  • New 3D Zelda
  • Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky Remake
  • Kirby Planet Robobot sequel

i’m holding out hope that the alleged fe4 remake will launch after the switch two comes out. i also assume that the next kirby game is being pushed out to release around that time.

in THEORY i would love a xenonlade x port on there but i don’t have much faith.

I don't really have any hopes for possible games, nor do I want to try and predict too much at this point, but I feel like this is a fairly safe list of noteworthy games I'd expect to come out at launch or within the first year:
  • Mario Kart 9
    • This feels like a highly likely launch title for the Switch's successor, given how MK8D has dominated the sales charts for the Switch and a new Mario Kart game is long overdue at this point.
  • A new IP of some kind
    • Given Nintendo's track record for doing this recently (Wii Sports, Nintendo Land, 1-2-Switch), this makes sense as another launch title.
  • Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
  • Pokemon Legends Z-A
    • I think given that both MP4 and Legends Z-A are 2025 release dates, I could see them being cross-gen launch games to help get more of Nintendo's franchises onto the system early and thus boost sales, similar to how both Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild were cross-gen launch games.
  • A new 3D Super Mario game
    • It won't be a launch title, but it feels like a safe bet we'll get a new one for the Switch's successor at some point in 2025, given Nintendo's track record with Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Mario Odyssey.

My thoughts would be any of the following as release games:

Mario Kart
Splatoon 4
Pokemon Legends ZA (dependent on when the console releases)

My dream release game would obviously be a new animal crossing though..

My only REAL want for the succesor is e-shop and home screen music to come back 😭

Just guesses
Metroid Prime 4 Switch 2 edition
New Mario Kart
Party Animals
COD game
Cyberpunk
Tekken 8
Elden Ring
Baldur's Gate 3

I would love a new Mario Kart. It's now been over ten years since the last Mario Kart game (mobile and port aside). However, the burst of DLC that MK8 Deluxe got on the Switch certainly made it feel alive.

Uhhhh themes would be nice, why doesn't the Switch have them...

I never really took a look at the Switch's release year because at the time I thought I'd never have one. BotW launch day was definitely needed, but the launch year with Mario Kart and Splatoon is pretty good. I'm surprised by how many indie titles got on there first year.

I think a new Pokémon experience would be good, whether that's taking Legends or Mystery Dungeon to the next level or something new.

The one thing the next Switch really could prove itself with is its capability to properly run AAA titles with high graphics.
Imagine if the next GTA would be a launch title for it. Nintendo certainely has some good connections to make something happen.

Impossible to predict, but if I had to venture some guesses:

Mario Kart 9 - MK8 was such a huge hit and has been around for so long, it's time for a new Mario Kart. The only reason I could see them holding off on this is maybe to wait until after the first holiday season to have a Switch 2 + MK9 bundle... but even so, Nintendo could launch this as a standalone title at launch.

Metroid Prime 4 - while it has nowhere near as wide of a following as Mario, Zelda or Pokemon, Metroid has a loyal following and this game has been anticipated for many years. It would be a statement game to release at launch. If it's not a launch game, I think it'll either come out 1st for Switch and then have a port ready soon after for Switch 2, or come out within the 1st year of Switch 2's lifetime.

Some sort of 1-2 Switch / Wii Sports type of casual active party game.

Mario Odyssey 2 - similar to Metroid Prime 4, could see this coming right at launch (maybe even more likely for Mario), otherwise definitely within the 1st year of Switch 2's life.

A big name 3rd party JRPG title, possible a remaster/remake of a beloved classic. I'll go out on a limb and say either Square or Atlus delivers on this prediction.
