Let's inject some positivity into this board. What are your top three favourite things about Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

I would pick:

  1. Terra-forming - AC:NH has already stolen more hours of my time than AC:NL ever did thanks to terra-forming. It's not something I thought I'd enjoy, but I can lose hours to it easily. Watching my island come to life has been such an enjoyable experience.
  2. Character customisation - I never cared much about how my character looked in older games, but as someone who doesn't really like using QR Codes I've enjoyed the seemingly endless array of clothing included in this game. The additions they brought in around Halloween were also fantastic.
  3. Island hopping - I find it far less tedious than the reload trick from AC:NL.

What about you?

1. The Graphics:
The graphics on this game are some of the most impressive I've ever seen on a Switch game. The way the flowers move, the trees, and anything else in the wind is just really nice. There are really small details where you can put a Fan inside your home and you can see how different objects affect based on the direction the wind from the fan is coming from. The sounds of the bugs were well done, the water waves were really great, and the wind is a helpful mechanic whenever you're looking for Balloon gifts.

2. The Gameplay
The way you control your character is really responsive and you can run all over your island. Everything from using tools, shopping, swimming/diving, and basically storing items have felt more fleshed out compared to past AC games. There is more pocket storage, you can store more things in your home more than ever, and there is Nook Mile tasks to do whenever you want to feel accomplished.

3. The Customization and Terraforming
By far the best thing about this game is the customization and terraforming. You can customize certain furniture and items from crafting, have a lot of custom patterns or objects on your island from someone else who designed it using the Kiosk, and of course the one thing that stood out the most is terraforming. Making your island the way you want and how you want it to be has never been so expressive and giving you the freedom to do whatever you want.

It's hard to choose! I mainly only played the GCN Animal Crossing (some Wild World too) and what stands out about NH is:
  1. The ability to terraform, not necessarily terraforming itself anymore but having an island that I terraformed to my liking. :)
  2. The ability to place items outside (more customization)!
  3. The graphics (those summer sunsets though ).
I almost picked the new animals but nah, there are plenty that are new to me even if they aren't new to NH. Before I bought the game I thought the ability to transfer patterns via QR code rather than manually create pixel by pixel would be a favorite feature, but I haven't used it as much as I anticipated. I did use it for one custom area that I really enjoy seeing on my island, but that kind of plays into the graphics now that I already created it. I just like looking at it when the sun sets, etc.!

I love the villager design in this game. This may be an uncommon opinion, but I like how the villagers aren’t as small and chubby, like they were in the previous games. I also like the ability to customize the color of items. It gives you more versatility and design options. Lastly, I like the option of having as many pattern slots as you do in the design app. You don’t have to create multiple characters in order to design your island. A few honorable mentions are the inability for villagers to move out without asking you, and choosing where your villagers houses are. I’ve seen so many creative islands.

1) terraforming and outside decoration.

I know new leaf had pwp, but this is the first game in the series where you can truly make your town (island) your own.
You can make pretty much anything you want!
And with the path tools, making paths is so easy now.
It used to be the most horrible tedious thing to do.

I'm also going to include in this part how you can chose where everything goes. No more random houses plopping down ruining your layout.

2) the villagers.

I know villagers are far from exclusive to new horizons, but they just add so much life to the game. I'm constantly talking to them!
Giving them their daily gifts and doing favours for them, helping them when they're sick.
They just really make it feel like home.

I especially love how they have so much dialogue dependant on what's going on. Clouds? They'll talk about it. Trails in the sky from a plane? They'll talk about it. Near an object? They'll talk about it. Visitor on your island? They'll talk about it.
It makes them feel so alive.

Speaking of feeling alive, they no longer just wonder around aimlessly. They actually do stuff on your island. They'll interact with things, go fishing, sing, catch bugs, play, look at the flowers.
I can actually believe they live here.

3) crafting

Its one of the best things they did for the series.
It means that no matter the time, day or night, you can play the game.
You need materials to make things with so it added gathering to the game. And since you can make furniture, you can design your island even when the shops are closed.

And since you need DIYs to craft, it's added a new collectable to the game.
It was especially amazing in the early game as every day would expand what you could do.
But even now, I still sometimes get new DIYs. It's a great feeling.

I didnt get all of the autumn ones, so I'm really excited for autumn to come back around.

Edit: honorable mention to, and I know this is controversial, but how they made shampoodles into the mirror and the post office into a letter stand.

Before it was a case of if you wanted to change your look, you could only do it once per day, and you could never know with any certainty (without a guide) what you would look like.
Now you can freely change your look as much as you want and it is very freeing.

And for the post office, I hated mail in previous games because of how you had to buy paper to write on and carry it around with you. It was just awkward and clunky. And how you had to take mail out of the box and put it in your mail inventory... just the worst!
Now if I want to send someone something, I can just go straight to the postcard stand, and do it there and then! It such a better system.
And as a bonus, mail stays in your mail box and it can store 300/deletes your oldest to replace with new ones, so there is no need for the janky inventory management.

1) placing furniture outside!
I recently picked up my copy of WW and I keep getting furniture and think "ah what's this? let me just place it and have a look" - only to realize I can't put anything anywhere except inside my house. Placing furniture outdoors made such a huge difference in how I interact with my island and brings me a lot of joy!

2) villagers don't move away at random
I'm really glad I don't have to force myself to play everyday just so that my villagers stay in town. It's refreshing to have random animals move in, but it's quite sad to see ones villager bestie go without having been able to stop it from happening in time. I'm glad those times are over!

3) character customization
It's much more inclusive! I get bored easily and like to change up my face/hair a lot and I'm glad it's as easy as it is.

Coming from a newbie perspective, since acnh is my first animal crossing game I would say my favorite parts of the game are:

1. the villagers: for me this is the number one thing that keeps me obsessed with this game. I love my villagers, I love seeing them interact with my island and building my friendship with them in the game. I love finding new villagers, I love how nothing is set in stone and it is pretty easy to move villagers in and out. I love the randomness and excitement I get from island hopping too.

2. I love the customization options, for just everything!. I have thought about playing acnl, but with how used to things like being able to move buildings, choose your own villagers, and decorate, what I read about acnl (like plot resetting for example) just sounds like such hard work! I would be much too lazy to do the tricks I have seen described. I also prefer decorating outside over inside, because I want to be out and about on my island not locked inside (unlike irl). I could go on and on, cause everything is so customizable in this game.

3. I like the openness of the gameplay. This one is hard to describe well. But some days I want to wander around picking up shells and looking at my island and villagers, and some days I want to obsessively redesign, and some days I want to fish and catch bugs, and I like that there are only a few instances in which I ‘have’ to do something in particular.
I realize this may be something from animal crossing in general, it it is what makes the game relaxed to me. There’s no competition, and no pressure.

seeing answers above I already want to add to my own (the graphics are truly incredible). Basically, for whatever reason this game just has everything I was looking for in a game.

A few honorable mentions are the inability for villagers to move out without asking you, and choosing where your villagers houses are.
I forgot that these changes were new to AC:NH! Villager house placements were a pain before. I would've played AC:NL a lot more if I didn't have to take steps to make sure no one had moved out every time I went back to it. It would put me off playing entirely. Or I would take the time to ensure no one moved away and by that point I'd be over it and not actually play! These were definitely welcome changes.

1. Placing items outside - So much freedom with placement!
2. Terraforming - Adds dimension and the ability to make forced perspective.
3. Not worrying about villagers moving out without your permission. I remember having to save the date I last played in NL to prevent my villagers from moving away. I love how I do not need to worry about that with NH and time travel without worry.

For me I would pick:

1. Villagers not moving out randomly: I’ve been needing a lot of breaks and so I am very grateful they do not move out randomly like in NL. I remember checking back in my NL town months or maybe a year ago to look at something and i forgot what the trick was to ensure the villagers wouldn’t move (and was too lazy to look), so even though I no longer play the game, I’m regretting not looking it up just to ensure everything would be the same if I ever return to playing it.
2. Decorating outside: Decorating has always been my favorite thing about AC so being able to decorate outside was a very welcome addition to the game. More freedom to be creative is always a plus in my book.
3. Harv’s studio: I have fun making up rooms for friends or for my own purposes. I still need to make one for @Mick 🤔.Very helpful to able to try out outfits on villagers or myself and use items without needing to buy them.

1) terraforming. Yes, the controls could be a lot better but the freedom to shape and change almost the entire island is my dream come true.

2) the ability to place items outside. Public works projects were a step in the right direction (bring back the wisteria trellis Nintendo, I’m begging you) but I remember being disappointed that I could make a graveyard in my basement but not actually outside of my house, now my entire island could become a graveyard and no one could do anything about it 💀

3) I appreciate the hairstyles for those of us with 2/3/4 type hair. Finally my character can look like me.

1) The villagers - Love that they can't randomly move away, as this would stress me out very much. Sometimes life gets in the way and you have to take an extended break, so I'm really glad this is an aspect we have control over. I chose my villagers carefully and get very attached!
2) The customization - You can really make your island your own by curating custom designs that fit your theme. And it's even more versatile now with the 50 extra slots, I don't have to stress as much about running out of room. I know alot of people aren't happy with the furniture selection, but this is my first Animal Crossing game so I have nothing to compare to. I think we have a decent amount of furniture, and I like that we can customize many of them as well!
3) You can play at your own pace - There's no objectives really to meet, so you can chose what you'd like to focus on. You can grind those Nook Mile Achievements, fill up the museum, complete your catalog, terraform and decorate, go fishing and diving, breed flowers, just chill with your villagers, literally anything you want!

I'm probably gonna get some hate for this first one.

The music. I always love music in Animal Crossing games, and this one is no different. Somehow, I feel like its unpopularity has made me appreciate it more.

Character customization. I like how cute all the clothes are and the sheer variety of things to wear. I've been using custom clothing a lot more in this game, too! If there were one issue I had with this part, it would be that I wish certain clothes fit the animals the same way it fits us. Like, it's disappointing when I buy a fancy balloon-hem dress for someone, and they put it on, and it's just... Straight like their other shirts. Same thing with the little rounded sleeves.

Last would be the foley work in this game. And yes, I'm considering this separate from the music. The various footsteps and bug chirps and just... Everything really makes the world come alive. I think my favorite might be that on a windy day, I noticed the creaking of the hanging sign by the Ables' shop. What an amazing detail!

The customizations I like that I have the freedom to decorate however I want with different paths and things. I’ve always wanted this feature in other games that I’ve played and it’s already built into the game without needing any mods.

I like playing and trading online for the most part. Being able to play with others is fun for me and makes the game much more enjoyable.

food items are probably my favorite. I’m not sure why exactly, but they make me happy. I’m still waiting for some tacos though.

1. The amount of villagers in the game because I really think there’s a lot to choose from.

2. The terra-forming as it adds endless possibilities to the way your island can look and I’ve even considered changing mine a bit recently.

3. The amount of items you can craft from DIY recipes as I love the idea of crafting being added and it’s my favorite thing about this game. ^^

1. The fact villagers don't move away without your permission. This was the main reason I kept taking long breaks in New Leaf.
2. Being able to decorate the island with furniture.
3. I haven't thought of the third one at the moment. I may think of it later!

1. Less Daily Punishment - what do I mean by this? This covers a lot of issues that I had with NL. In NL, the game "punishes" you if you don't play daily or at least recently play i.e. villagers moving away without notice. If you don't have Beautiful Town Ordinance the game punishes you further by killing your flowers, more trash, etc. The only "daily punishment" I can see now is "Where'd you go? I miss you so..." line of dialogue so now I'm grateful I don't get punished for going on hiatus or play other games extensively.

2. The Villager Cycle - Island hopping is so much better than the tent method in NL. All I need are NMT and I can go island to island until I find a suitable villager. Its not perfect but at least I don't have to mess with the clock or create a new PC just see if the new villager is a favourite or not.

3. Furniture Variety - What many don't realize is that NH is still very young in its current cycle. The game is only a year old and we already have so many furniture variations and variations of crafted furniture from DIYs. Expect more furniture to roll out in more monthly updates.

These are just 3 things right now that I love about NH. I would've said terraforming a year ago but now I find it very time-consuming and I'm very happy with what I currently have.

1. Freedom. Terraforming, custom designs, player & furniture customization, and the ability to place outdoor decor allowed players to express creativity more freely.

2. Inventory & Storage Space. Just being able to store items is a huge QoL improvement.

3. Visuals. I really adore the tiny little details in the game. Sadly, it's often overlooked by many. I love that despite the cutesy artstyle, they still manage to put realism on it. I love the details on the food, the sky based on weather and time, the footstep sounds, the critters, the fact that some items are actually real (such as the photocopy machine inside the Resident Services). I could go on and on. It's just too good.

Villager house placements were a pain before.

Flashback to when you'd put down paths so a villager wouldn't move into a certain area....only to have them plop their house down directly onto the garden you freshly planted lol

I'm gonna go with some smaller things:

1.) I really like being able to give villagers door decorations. The wreaths usually look really good.
2.) The play hobby...never ceases to make me smile when I randomly find a villager running around.
3.) Ok this one was already mentioned, but the outdoor furniture thing is HUGE. Being able to put pumpkins around my island before Halloween hit was pretty big for me.
