Hi there,
with the new animal crossing announced, I've started setting aside for a switch but I'm so confused about what I need vs what I don't, which size to get, what accessories are needed and I need a bunch of advice.
I plan on getting a few other games, Okami, botw, mario kart and whatever strikes me and is a good deal ('cause I'm incredibly cheap) so I don't know if you need certain controllers for one or the other.

Help me......

Thanks guys!

I didn't buy much in the way of accessories for my switch. If you plan to travel with it often then I'd recommend a travel case.
All I've purchased for mine are a screen cover (probably a necessity tbh, just to be safe), and two pro controllers. I wouldn't say you need pro controllers with the games you listed, but if you get something that will require a lot of button mashing (splatoon 2, smash, etc.) I would suggest looking into something more substantial than the joy cons.

I don't have much accessories. I got a free screen cover and case with my bundle though... that's probably the bare minimum. I don't even own the pro controllers because I enjoy playing it handheld with the joycons and god these thing can add up and get pricey. That being said, the joy cons are pretty crap like Duzzel mentioned. I'm already on my 2nd pair because of drifting issues, although I did manage to fix my first pair eventually using contact cleaners, but I don't know how long they will last. I suggest if you're thinking of using joycons to play in the long run, make sure you always put your switch away in a container/travel case when not playing, so it doesn't collect dust. If a little dust gets underneath the rubber cap in the joy cons, it can cause drifting issues. Also, don't eat like.. cheetos or something and touch your joy sticks right after lolol but that's a given.

I've only played switch docked a few times so I can't speak for it. But I've heard people say that they have issues with their switch over heating. Just make sure you keep a close eye on your switch when it's docked because it overheats easily in there.

In my opinion, you don't need anything aside the system and maybe games. If you get into gaming and wanna be a serious competitor then maybe invest in a pro controller but the Joy-Con grip plays fine if you ask me. The Switch is pretty complete as is, no need to buy a load of accessories with it despite what people say. It's all just upselling really....

HOW-EV-ER I would recommend a screenprotector if you plan on playing docked a lot. I am very careful with my system but the screen still got a ton of bad scratches along the sides because of docking and undocking the system. Then again I've been playing a lot ever since launch and it's just wear because I used it a lot.

The poster above talks about the Switch overheating and you don't have to worry about that at all. Don't let the drama stories get to you they're often not widespread despite what the media says. Should something be amiss with your system though (that can happen to anyone so you can't completely rule it out) remember that you have 12 months of warranty.

As for a good game deal, I recommend Puyo Puyo Champions if you like puzzle games. It's only €10/$10 on the Nintendo eShop.

another set of joy-cons or a pro controller if you plan on doing playing your switch with other people.

Screen protector is basically your only 'must buy'. Whether you're playing it docked or handheld, you really should have one of these given the screen is part of the system. I have one of the tempered glass ones on mine, they don't cost much and they do the job better than those crappy plastic films. It should be obvious why you need one when playing handheld, there's also the risk of the dock scratching the screen since apparently they didn't think that may be enough of an issue to try and prevent.

If you're taking it out and about, probably invest in a travel case. They don't cost much. Again, the main reason should be obvious.

If you're playing docked a lot I may recommend one of the pro controllers. I don't play docked much so I didn't bother with one, but it may help to avoid the seemingly inevitable breakage of the piece of crap joycons if you're not using them as much, or at least give you a backup controller for when it happens. It's also just a second controller for if you ever want to multiplayer since, IMO, using the joycons as two separate controllers is the most uncomfortable and worst control method I've ever used to play a game.

Typically it doesn't matter if you use the joycons or a pro controller. Nintendo were pretty much the only developer putting motion controls and stuff in their games which required the joycons, but even they seem to have gotten bored with shoehorning that into games.

one thing I want to get for mine is a carrying case so I don't have to worry about it getting scratched when traveling

I didn’t get much with my switch. I’d recommend getting at least 1 extra set of joy cons in case disaster strikes (it’s happened to me) and a case, since it’s super convenient. A screen protector and cleaning cloth would be a good idea as well. Pro controllers aren’t needed at all, and are fairly expensive and can sometimes be a hassle, but are highly recommend in my opinion. ^^

If and only if you like travel and decide to bring your Switch along, I'd recommend looking into a powerbank to charge your Switch on your travels, especially when camping.

Pro controllers are definitely cool, but I'm honestly satisfied with the Joycons, in the grip or even without it. I was going to save up for a one originally, but I decided I'm content without it.

I'd strongly recommend screen protectors, and a case. I luckily found a case (one of the Zelda ones) that actually came with screen protectors.

That's the bare minimum really, lol.

I'm planning to get a travel bag, a game card case, and a protector for mine.

Have had my Switch almost since launch, and my personal top three accessories:

1. Travel case. An absolute must if you wanna take your system with you, or just play in handheld mode a lot.
2. A pro controller. Pricey? Yes. But amazing and a must-have for playing in docked mode.
3. An extra power adapter. Comes in very handy when you're playing in handheld mode, because the battery life isn't all that. Oh, and make sure you get an official Nintendo brand power adapter. Apparently adapters not specifically created for the Switch has been known to cause system crashes and breakage.
