I don’t know if this is true, but one of my teachers told me that “bless you” came from a Medieval superstition that if you sneezed, it meant you were possessed by a demon? Idk. I think a demon would have better things to do than make someone sneeze lol.
Funny, I've heard of a different superstition.
That when people sneeze, it's their soul trying to leave them, and saying 'bless you' causes the soul to get sucked right back in. XD Obvs an old superstition, but interesting there's more than one.

To the hiccups situation, I'm never around people I don't know who have hiccups. But to the people I do know - weather hardly know or know quite well - I usually say 'ahh, got the hiccups?' More of a rhetorical question, but I am around people whom English isn't their first language and may not know what it's called.
Then, if not busy I do try and find ideas that could help them stop it, cause I know how bad hiccups can be, I have them constantly! And it's a hatred I had so bad, because I sound so childish so I try and get rid of them quickly.

Usually holding breath (I can't really do that, makes me a lil sluggish), drinking water, or once I was able to get them away by angling my head downwards and breathing deeply.

i actually don’t think i’ve seen anyone but my parents (and myself ofc) get the hiccups. we normally just tease each other about it and wait for it to stop, but sometimes we try the scare tactic (which is honestly just one of us saying “boo!” or “ahh!” lmao) to try and get them to go away. that’s about it lol.

if i was in the company of someone else and they got the hiccups, i wouldn’t say anything to them unless they went on for a few minutes — at that point, i’d probably make a small joke, or ask if they’re okay or offer them water or something. i’d be so embarrassed if i ever got the hiccups in front of someone that isn’t my mom or dad (and even then, i’m still embarrassed lol) and wouldn’t really want them to say anything about it, so i’d feel awkward saying something about someone else’s hiccups.

i try not to comment on things that i wouldn’t want people commenting on if i were in their position.

I don’t say anything if someone else hiccups. Though, I might excuse myself if I hiccup when I’m in certain company where it feels more polite or proper to do so.

I ususally ask if they have the hiccups because I’m not sure 😂 I usually misunderstand if it’s a burp or upcoming sneeze or something

Typically no one around me talks about the hiccups by me or someone else; usually if they do it’s when I’M hiccuping because I have chronic hiccups that just sound like I’m gasping at something really important. In those cases I just walk away and try to cover my mouth, hold my breath, get water, anything to stop them because if I don’t? I will achieve a migraine, and we love those don’t we.

I don’t usually say anything other than maybe sympathise words because hiccups are annoying. I’ve always wanted to say something when people cough though but never knew what to say really.
