What is the point of bells (on the forum?)

I'm fairly new to the site and I was just wondering. I've managed to collect a fair number of bells but I have no clue what to actually do with them. I went to the shop thing, is that all it is? Also how do you actually earn bells?

You earn bells by posting and can be used to buy just about anything... art, ACNL items, game downloads, etc.

As badcrumbs pointed out in their post, you can buy pretty much everyting with this virtual currency,
from artwork / signatures { at The Museum Forum }, to AC in-game bells & items, forum collectibles (the tiny square thingy under member's avatars on the sidebar), game download codes, etc.

As for The Shop that you visited, yeah, those goodies are always sold out, and restocks are usually in very very limited quantity, if any at all, and new goodies and bigger batches are usually announced via Bell Tree Direct -> { Example of a BTD }

This kinda confirmed my wonderings about trading game codes for btb, you're losing out on real life money haha it's kinda pointless to use it on anything but collectables but w/e

So you can collect Animal Crossing items while you collect Animal Crossing items in Animal Crossing.

Plenty of people will use them as payment for various things too including other sites and stuff (but not real life currency). Anything else they are used for has already been pointed out above so I won't reiterate it.
