I see a lot of people saying they'll reset till they get a "good map"/"good town", but what even counts as a good map to you? I don't really know what to go for as being ideal, or what's better, so I have to ask:

What kind of map do you want? What are you looking for in the map? Are you going for certain map features, or are you trying to avoid certain features?

For me, a good map is one that uses the new options of how a map could look, meaning:

Multiple waterfalls, a river that winds across the map but isn't too spread out (and thus takes too much space), and layers that spread a little to the sides. I also don't like secluded sections that are too small to really build anything, so the top layers of the map have to be decently sized as well.

A dream would come true if the top layer is two-sectioned, so I can have my house built on a small "mountain" for myself surrounded by pine trees, just like on this map from the new trailer. (I'm talking about the upper red circle, the other one was already on the image that I found online) Maybe my mountain could be a little smaller, since I want it completely for myself!

The other top-layer section could be used by other villagers as well.

However, I wouldn't reset until I get that exact map.

As there's now a polevault, and we are starting from nothing, I feel like we can embrace the weirder river possibilities without worrying about bridge placement. I felt pressure when I played New Leaf to get a somewhat efficient layout, with a simple river, central-ish bridge, pre-existing villagers not taking the best spots on the map, and Re-Tail in a spot not too far from the dock.

Now, river/bridge doesn't matter so much as we can polevault over.

We can influence where villagers set up their tents/houses.

We will be able to decide where Re-Tail and other stores go.

So my only remaining criteria would be:
  • Minimal amount of ponds (ideally no more than two)
  • An interesting raised area(s)
  • Something that feels very unlike the kind of map we could get in New Leaf.

Or to put it much better than I already have:

This. Very much this!

I just want a map that is aesthetically pleasing. Multiple waterfalls would be awesome! But without knowing what other map options are available I couldn't comment too much! I'm just so excited for release day!

I think I'll only really reset to get a fruit I like, probably apples.

The thing with resetting for the map is that I don't think we'll really be able to easily reset like in New Leaf. I'm hoping we'll be able to choose from multiple maps again, so we can avoid any maps that have bad features like Winona and VillageDuck mentioned that you can see from the map selection - small areas or too many ponds, for instance - but the things you can only see once you get to town will require more time. In New Leaf, you could take a first look around the town and reset right away if there was anything bad about the layout, but in New Horizons, from what I can tell, it looks like you'll need the pole vault to check out the areas across the river and stairs to see the raised areas, so you'll need to put in a lot more time and effort before you can determine if your town is "perfect".

Also, was resetting so much of a thing when New Leaf first came out? Like, of course once we knew what worked in a map and what didn't, and what we could influence, it became a thing, but I wouldn't have thought to reset for a good map in the beginning because I didn't know what options we would have (and since having the river split like in Wild World, I couldn't reset for that). To some extant, we'll probably be able to use New Leaf as a reference, but I imagine there'll also be new things to factor in.

I honestly would not know, I will probably be scanning the map options to see one that I like, but I would want one with one pond, or if there's an option for no ponds, then no ponds. I've never been a fan of ponds for some reason.

But other than that, we'll see (either on release day or in the inevitable direct)

I want a map that does not contain a river which splits the land up into small sections which will be narrow and crowded and prove to be pretty much useless in terms of landscaping. I believe that the sloped beaches instead of the cliff splitting beach from grass will help with the narrow land strips, but I still really want a river that is simple as possible that it does not break up the land into little parts. I want to have space to move, build, put down villagers and shops/whatever else without it feeling cramped. New Leaf was extremely easy to feel cramped with all of the landscaping things utilized and it got kind of irritating.

I don't think that I will be the strictest with my map resetting, I just want something that I can work with! As long as it looks moderately okay to these standards I'll totally stick with it and make do.

Honestly if ponds are still a thing, maybe one! And villagers in a good place. I'd like circle grass and apples or cherries as my native fruit. I definitely wont care as much as I did previously

I used to reset to specifically get apples, circle grass and at least 1 dog villager. I spent days and days resetting and would go ages without a town until I got what I want. With NL, I didn't care about the villagers, but I wanted a river that wasn't too windy and the plaza to be directly in the middle of town.

Now, I don't have that willpower lol. I still want apples and circle grass, and a nice layout, but that's it for now.

I know with the grass it's a small detail to some, but for me, I like how neat it looks and considering I see that everywhere around town I'd rather have it the shape I want.

I don't know if it's my OCD or what, but I hate maps with water close to the edge. The tiny amount of space between is so small, I never want to go there of put PWPs there. I never venture there because of it. If a villager moves in, I pray they move into those spots.

Below I have circled the problematic parts of the known maps.

Of the 2. Map B is the least troublesome.

What I'd really like is a island where the water cuts across horizontally

So long as the river doesn't go all over the map, I'm not too picky about how the island is gonna be laid out for me. Gotta have me those wide open spaces.

I don?t know because we?ve only seen 2 maps.

I want a crazy river and each of the three tiers to have plenty of space

i just want a spot big enough to put my villagers and a pond on a higher level that creates a waterfall to put my house next to. i dont rly care for a private beach or anything fancy like that, but i wouldnt mind having one.

I can't really say what my most desired island map will be, since like Stevey Queen above mentioned, we've only seen a few maps thus far. We don't know how much the island can vary. However...

I can say that there a few 'what if' island maps I would be pretty happy with:

1. An area surrounded by cliffs, like a little secluded grove of sorts. I feel this would have a lot of aesthetic potential due to how I plan my towns.
2. Something similar to the most recently seen map in the ad -- but I'd like a slightly smaller 'island' area all to myself, preferably on a higher level of a town.
3. An large open area with a few ponds near a cliff.

These are three that come to mind straight away that I would be pretty content with, however I could easily encounter something entirely different that blows my mind enough to keep and work with.

I don't know what maps there are yet.
I know I want a single river that divides the island into two, so I can landscape better.

Unless I got one that sectioned off a third part right at the bottom, left or right, then I'd put my house there. But I want two large main sections.

I want ponds as well.

This really represents well what I would like to avoid. I just want a map that gives me optimal area and placement for landscaping. Obviously map B is better here but I'd love if the river just splits the map down the middle or horizontally once.

I would like a map with a really interesting river. I also want multiple waterfalls if possible. Lots of ponds as well, since I like those. Hopefully we can build more than three bridges since I would need a lot of those. Might be hard to build in but I find it fun to make difficult terrain look good. I don't remember what the grass shapes are in New Horizons, but assuming they're the same I would like to have triangle grass. Though I wouldn't reset over grass shape if I otherwise liked the map.

I agree with JKDOS on this. I don't like wasted space because everything is cramped.

My main thing is that I want a river that splits a smallish area (river island) where I can put my house and build a yard and then put Molly and Poppy nearby.

I really hope they bring cool town features like bays back as well. Would really like a three tier town if the towns don't feel too small.

symmetrical tmgenerally, but the new ability to place villager houses and jump over rivers complicates things. i might want a more interesting map now.
