Many of you entered NH having played previous AC games, so if not for New Horizons, maybe in a previous AC game where you were less familiar?

Even though I started ACNH right after it was released, it was my first main-line game (I had been playing ACPC). Now that I'm starting a new island, I'm looking back at mistakes I made originally!
- I definitely ate the fruit mom sent.
- I didn't hit rocks in a quick enough succession, then wondered why it took so long to get iron nuggets!
- I sold the bed Luna gave me, because I didn't know items were unorderable.

Anything, or just me? 😝🌟

The only thing I can think of is that I didn’t know you could invite villagers into those three empty plots. I still got extremely fortunate with the villagers that came and I was able flip them for my dream villagers. Mine were Sherb, Lily, and Cookie. I even had Stitches randomly move in to that 7th plot. It wasn’t all that bad, but it kind of felt weird getting the villagers everyone wanted, and I just wanted to trade Stitches for Goldie. That’s actually how I ended up acquiring Goldie. I don’t know how I got so insanely lucky.

  • I didn't know you could get unlimited branches from 1 tree.
  • I didn't know that setting clothes to a wand would take them away from your storage. I was very confused seeing them go missing!
  • The worst one. I didn't use a crossbreeding guide for flowers cus I'd memorized the combinations from New Leaf. I assumed it would be more or less the same in NH. So I set up a huge area with red and white windflowers cus red + white = pink obviously. It wasn't until much later I found out you get pink by breeding... red + orange....??

I didn’t realize there was an order to what villagers you got for the first three plots. So my lazy villager was a random move in. My sixth villager was also I random villager because I didn’t realize you had to go looking for a villager that day or it would auto fill.

I didn't know that setting clothes to a wand would take them away from your storage. I was very confused seeing them go missing!
This is something I didn’t realize right away either.

I wouldn't call this a mistake per say but when pumpkins were announced, I planted a lot of them, thinking they'd be like normal farming games and disappear after being picked.

Needless to say, they don't lolol. I have looooads of pumpkins.

Mine:
  • Kept waiting for Beardo to leave the campsite, slowing down my progress. Didn't know you had to accept the first campsite visitor.
  • Purchased new tools instead of crafting them.
  • Let Cleo and Gayle go without obtaining their photos.
  • Gifted Cherry a Soft Serve Hat as a joke. She's still wearing it today.
  • Not necessarily a mistake per se, but: simple panels. I spent so much time creating a castle, and then they released the castle items which, whilst amazing, meant I had to redo everything.

This still upsets me to this day:

On the first day I made a “Welcome to my Island” post on the message board, which I then decided to edit on a later day (because I wanted to pep it up with some tricks I’d learned since)

Of course, editing changed the date and moved my message on the board to being the newest submission. It completely ruined the whole point of the idea, and I ended up deleting it because it made no sense several weeks and posts later

My biggest regret is where I put the houses and shops/museum. I didn't realise at the beginning I would be able to terraform, otherwise I think I could have had my island looking a lot tidier. I know I could move buildings/restart my island, but when I think about the things I like they outweigh the negatives. I think I rushed through it the first time as all I wanted was for K.K. to come every week! Now onto my 2nd island for just over a month and I've been taking the pace a lot slower, as I know what's to come. Been leaving spaces for certain things and also left spaces for paths when I get to the terraforming stage.

Nothing major, but my controls were dying so I couldn't enter my actual birthday, so it ended up being January 1st. (aka New Year's Day) I When I played it on January 1st, 2021, was really confused...then I remembered what happened.

I did not know you had to fill in a new plot on the same day and one of the plots were autofilled. I got Ricky, who looks a bit funny but really grew on me so I did keep him on my first island. ^_^

I also did not know (apparently I did not pay attention when Leif was talking) that watering pumpkins every day meant a bigger harvest, that took me forever to learn. Also I did not think of digging up and planting rare-color pumpkins to get more of them, so I just bought a TON of pumpkin starters and waited to get several of each color. Lol. (This was pre-update).

I also did not know that villagers would place clothing I gave them in their house, not exactly a mistake but I did not like much the way it ended up looking. So now I think it through more what I give to them.

On my first island, which I only had 2 months, I gifted my villagers a bunch of stuff I later regretted. Bob and Katt running around in that ugly orange and yellow Mom's apron still haunts me to this day. Ugh. 😵

As far as hats and clothes that you regret giving, I believe that there was an update so that if you complain about a villager's clothes to Isabelle while they're wearing the problem item it will be deleted from their inventory forever, like you never even gave it to them. I think it applies to all clothes, but I've only tested it on shirts so far.

When I started my first island, I didn't even notice the secret beach in the back, and it ended up in an awful spot. I also had a couple rocks on the beach that I hated the location of. But my biggest regret was giving a stupid name to my character - I've always used Falcor before but I decided to mix it up and totally regretted it. I ended up restarting the game eventually and fixing all that.

Nothing regretful. More like "I wish I knew this a lot sooner".
  • I didn't know you could use the axe to hit the rocks to get iron nuggets. I waited until I got the shovel which delayed me building the Nook's Cranny.
  • I wasted my Nook Mile tickets trying to get other flowers and fruits. Wasn't aware that you can only get one sister fruit and flower.

These mistakes were later fixed when I unlocked the ability to move my shops and islander homes :)

I originally hated were I placed my 2 stores they were in weird places and were way to far away from each other which made it a bit difficulted for visitors to find them to go shopping.

I also did not like how I placed my 2 original islander homes I placed them at funny angle and too close to each other leaving a lot of empty unusable space around it.

I didn't know you could run while holding down the B button. I didn't find out until a month or two later after NH's release. I played New Leaf for years and never ran. I didn't understand why people were complaining about flowers being trampled since it never happened to me.

I recently discovered you can make your character skid if you are running and quickly change to the opposite direction.

My biggest regret is choosing my current island base with a front-exit river and pears :(

I chose a front exit river because I remember those being special/coveted from ACNL days. But the more I played my game, the more I began to realize that having an exit right there was pretty inconvenient for my terraforming goals.

As for fruits, it's really just a minor regret. I'm slightly allergic to pears... I should have waited for peaches or apples!

I mean...I made the same mistakes that I think most did (but I also think the game forces you to make some of these mistakes by limiting what is possible). I definitely am still not happy with some of my building placements...and I realize that I can move these...but it always feels like so much work to do so. Also, I had no idea about the different airport locations, and I probably would have chosen a different island layout in general for the river mouths, hidden beach, etc.

Sold more resources in the first few days than I should have. It wasn't a horrible mistake, and I can't actually say it's a regret, but it did slow me down on building a few things.
