I kind of got the impression that holidays come in updates instead of being included with the game, was I misunderstanding that? Other than that I was blown away!

Yes, that seems to be what they're saying. This can have advantages though. Like others pointed out in some other threads, this could cause them to change up the holidays in later years. Maybe we would get different items as rewards later. Who knows.
