Yeah, when she's still giving you tasks to do on your first day as mayor she'll ask if you want to go fishing/bug catching. Pick the one who's tool isn't being sold. Come back and tell her the store isn't selling a rod/net. She'll sell you one instead.

To knock down balloons, wait for the balloon to be drifting from the beach to the main level of town, or from the main level to the beach. Once it's closer to your character you can hit and pop the balloon!

I've been tripping a lot today too! I thought it had to do with my character never wearing shoes, but I guess my clothes could be it.

I remember from wild world that if I got bad luck from Katrina I'd trip every 2 seconds unless you buy that "spell" for a bunch of bells to break the bad luck. It could be the same case in New Leaf. I got a bad luck fortune from Nooks yesterday and it said "today isn't your day, tomorrow doesn't seem good either" so I'm guessing luck could be why you keep tripping
