Will we actually be able to put our tent on a cliff?

I’ve noticed a lot of planned maps show people wanting to put their tent on a cliff, and I was planning on it, too. But looking at the footage we have so far, will we actually be able to? The cliffs don’t start out with ramps, you have to make a ladder. And setting up a tent is most likely one of the first things you do in the tutorial. Will we actually be able to climb up the cliff to place our tent on it, or are we stuck on ground level? The same goes for crossing wide rivers since we won’t have vaulting poles yet.

What do you guys think?

I don't think so, but I think the ability to relocate your home will be available as soon as possible. Maybe not for the tent, but definitely for the first house, so I don't think it matters too much.

That’s one of the things I really want to know that as well! In general I have a few questions about the placement of things on the map:

• can buildings go on the third layer? (not counting the beach as a layer)
• can leaf trees go on upper levels and pine on the lowest?

I’ll even give some bells to whoever finds evidence of the trees.

This line of reasoning is what I’m counting on—if we can’t place there, it would really discourage people from keeping/building those levels in the first place.

Maybe! If we don't need the ladder to reach the top most layers then I think we could possibly place our tents there.

I?m going to guess that the tutorial where you first place your tent will only let you access the middle section of land. There?s always like bulk portion of each map with rivers either side and I think we won?t be able to craft until after we place our tent so we won?t be able to place it outside of that area until we unlock the relocation feature.

But, honestly? We definitely will have the ability to place houses and likely many other things on higher layers of the island. We just likely won't be able to at first, since the places we can visit are limited due to a lack of tools and natural terrain to travel. Once we unlock features and tools, we can more than likely relocate our homes to new unacceptable areas.

I’m glad we can put houses on cliffs at least at some point! I really wanted to put my house on a cliff so we’ll see if relocation is possible.

You can definitely relocate your house at some point, it was shown in the Direct. You can even relocate facilities.

Yeah I think it would make more sense that we can't place the tent on an upper level until after we unlock more features and are given the option to relocate our tent/house. Unless Nook gives us a free ladder or something when he sees we're trying to access that upper level lol. Also I'd like to point out that house placement in this game is VERY lenient in comparison to past games, so I imagine the possibilities for landscaping are really broadened. Eg. Other than relocating your house, you can now place houses RIGHT against river banks and also only 1 square apart from another house. It really opens up a lot of possibilities. We will probably have to do a few upgrades before we can access these cool features though.
