Hello all! Okay so hear me out lol, I know it may be a bit trivial asking this here, but I'm asking friends and family alike what their opinions are as this may be my first time having only one mattress instead of two (box spring). So, I finally have the opportunity to replace my current bed (way too many things wrong with it). This includes both the mattresses and frame.

I have a bit of a small budget, so I'm wondering if having a minimalist look would be the way to go? Like a flat frame with a single mattress.

So I'd like to ask, does anyone have anything like this? How is it compared to a double mattress as far as comfort etc?

example:

Thanks!

I dont have a bed like that, but i dont think there'd be much difference comfort wise. aesthetically, i think it would be cute if youre going for minimalism, and there'd be some space to store things as well! If you dont like the openness of it I would buy a bedskirt for it!

In my opinion, having the box spring feels nicer. Though I prefer a lot of support and a firm mattress. My friend has a single mattress/frame combo and while it's nice, I feel like I sink into the middle of the bed whenever I lay on it and that's no good for my back and neck. If you go single, you might need a lot of pillows :)

One of my friend used to have this type of bed. While it looks modern and comfortable, and actually is casually useful for nap, I felt it isn't for long time use. Usual thick mattress feels better to me. A-and, a-also...
if you have plans at time where your bf/gf visits you and spend intimate time with you on the bed, it makes quite squeaky noises. I think it's one thing you may need to note if you consider purchasing it, probably.

I currently have a metal frame bed with one mattress, but I prefer a sturdier frame with a box spring.
The current frame now is rather noisy and just feels uneven without the extra firmness.

Single mattress is the norm here, from what I know, and it really depends on what sort of mattress you get. If your mattress isn't thick/firm enough, you'll definitely feel the frame and have some back pain. I had that problem with my old bed, but the bed my boyfriend and I have now is totally fine (or at least the mattresses are, the frame is a hand-me-down for our first apartment and needs to be replaced).

You should probably do a bit more research before getting it, especially if you're on a bit of a tight budget. I'm not sure how much of a price difference it'll make, since with a single-mattress, you'll probably need to splurge on the mattress to make sure it's comfy.

At university I have a single mattress and I generally sleep okay, but not great. Back at home though I actually have two mattresses stacked on top of each other for my bed, and it’s very, very comfy. I’m not sure how practical this is though with your budget.

I actually have a bed like that! It's really comfortable (well, for me, at least). I'm thinking of getting a new bed though.

A good mattress is very important. The average person sleeps nearly 1/3rd of their entire day, so you'll be spending a lot of time on it. If you can afford to get something better, you absolutely should. A good mattress is an investment in your own health, and can help prevent back issues later in life.

That being said, I sleep on a single mattress bed from IKEA that was $100 about 15 years ago. They get the job done. :)

I have a single mattress bed, but the frame is wooden and it's very sturdy. I also got a nice, thick, firm mattress for it because I like a really firm bed. I don't like to sink into the mattress at all. It's worked really well for me. I think the main thing is to make sure that the frame is sturdy and splurge as much as you can to get a decent mattress for your comfort.

My queen bed is definitely one of my favourite things about my room. You're so right about it being an important investment!

I don?t mind a single mattress, but I?ve heard that having a set or a box spring makes it more comfortable. I think it really depends on the value of the mattress over how many you have, and I think it depends on wether or not you like it firm or soft. I can sleep anywhere lol

I never heard of a single mattress bed before and the picture looks very uncomfortable. I've always had a bed with the box spring and it's proved to be very good.

When the BF and I moved in together, we bought a new mattress to go with our new IKEA bed. We told the sales guy that we had an IKEA bed and he told us we definitely needed a box spring in addition to our mattress, so that's what we bought (I'd always had a box spring at my parent's house, and I can't remember if the BF did or not).

Moving day comes around, the bed gets set up... and it's SO TALL. Like, The Princess and the Pea tall. I had to climb to get into it, and it looked ridiculous. We took it apart, tried to return it, then found out the mattress store wouldn't let us return it, so the box spring sat in our living room blocking all our natural light for a month before the BF's parents could take it to use with their spare bed. I never noticed a difference without it.

TL;DR - make sure the bed you buy suits whatever style you go with (box spring or mattress only) before you shell out $400 for a non-refundable box spring.

If you're going for a single mattress get a THICK one. I have a hybrid mattress with a foam top and springs in the bottom on a metal frame. It's very nice but I had to add some extra slats to stop the mattress from dipping below the frame in places, especially at the edges. And you want a thick mattress because you don't want to feel the slats, then you'll feel like you're sleeping on a futon.

I sleep on a single mattress since we haven?t been able to afford a box spring. (we only recently bought a bed frame, few weeks ago the mattress was on the floor lol) It?s honestly not that bad! Not the most comfortable, but I?m at the point where I don?t even care at this point because we had been on the floor so long LOL.. I think it really comes down to personal preference! You should definitely try out the single mattress bed to see how it feels before deciding.

Ah wow had no idea there more replies, thanks you guys! I ended up finding a cheap full and queen set in an outlet down the street from us ($150 for the whole set). They're not comfortable on their own, as I'll need a foam mattress top as I have back problems, but the money I'm saving can get me that and more.

Thanks for all the inputs! I just tried a single mattress bed at a friend's house recently, and wasn't bad either <3
