10 character island name confirmed!

I am glad that it's 10 characters! I hope that it's not a ~land at the end of it.

it's a pun. nintendo is spelled phoenetically as nintendou in japanese. usually it's typed in kanji as 任天堂 but it can also be written as にんてんどう.

the character 島 means island and is in a lot of japanese location names, for example hiroshima or nakajima. it can be pronounced as shima, jima, tou, and dou depending on the sounds that come before it. when you combine the first part of nintendo, にんてん (ninten) and that character for island 島 it basically just means ninten island and is pronounced the same or similar to nintendou. nintenland is probably the closest localizers could get inside the character limit without sounding awkward.

One has to be Isle. At least I hope it is.

I hope so too. Isle is way better than "land" and even better than island imo. I was only thinking "land" might be one because Nintendo's island was Ninten/Nintenland. But maybe that's just the best translation.

I definitely hope there's a no prefix option too, so everyone isn't locked into having one.

Happy to hear that I wont have to spend ages pouring over a different island name!
Hope we'll see the English tweet soon, fingers crossed for an Isle suffix!

Awesome that there is now ten characters. I actually already thought up a name I really like and it's very simple, so I'm hoping I can add the suffix "isle" to it, because then the name will sound really nice. I'm not going to reveal the name until I get the game though.

Using the built in Google translator on my camera. I get

What is the name of the island, Ninten Island, Jimin Ninten Island, and finally Ninten Island?

The third option is actually "tou", not "do".

They're the same thing. It's just different readings of the same kanji. Which you use generally depends on what the word before it is and how they flow off the tongue when speaking Japanese. It's slightly more complicated than that, but it would require more getting into more Japanese grammar nuances.

For English, I imagine either they will take the suffix out, or will let you pick something like "isle" vs "island" vs... uh... I don't know what a good third option is. I'd say "atoll", but that's specifically a ring shaped island with coral. The NH islands are very square.

iirc in the direct the name on the map is "Nintenland" but in dialogue tom nook just says "Ninten". i hope they give us information on the english suffixes soon

edit: just occured to me that the pax demo island was just "Bellview" with no apparent suffix so maybe this is optional or just a japanese language feature

i think we should at least wait until the other languages confirm it, too.
in new leaf, japanese games had 6 characters, but english was able to use 8.

The last one is "Nintentou".

The translations are "Ninten Island", "Ninten Island", and "Ninten Islet".

No clue what the English suffixes will be. My guess is "island", "isle", and "islet".

I really like the idea of the suffixes—and they thankfully work well with the name I’ve picked—but I do hope there’s an option to go without one. Some names just don’t work that way, and I’d hate for people to have to discard an option they’ve settled on already.

If they give us suffixes for the english version I think I'd like...

After the name:

Island
Cove
Coast
Bay

Before the name:

Isle
Isle of
Isla

I doubt it'll be that detailed but oh well. I think for a future Animal Crossing it might be a good idea to give us common words related to places that we can use. (or they could just extend the character limit...)

This confirms 10 characters~ Also shows one of the RV villagers

Glad to see the Welcome Amiibo villagers are in the game by default now.

I kinda already thought that was the case but it's nice to see confirmation.

Man I love that beach screen at night.

I remember in a few games where I thought suffixes weren’t a thing and ended up naming a farm ‘Cozy Farm.’ Turned out to be ‘Cozy Farm Farm,’ haha.

Great news for those looking into longer names, but I’m sticking with Cozy. :)
