Anyone else frustrated with the villager market?

This is exactly why I only do giveaways when my villagers move out. I don't care if they're tier 1 or bottom of the barrel, I'm not going to make people pay for them :( but I don't expect everyone to do the same! I have no problem in buying them as long as they're a reasonable price lol (luckily there are so many kind people here on TBT you can get most villagers practically for free)

I don't sell my villagers either, but I understand why people sell them and get tickets to either find their dreamies or also try to buy them. I got my Judy through the campsite method, to gift it to a dear friend, so if she's not against TT she could use that method (she doesn't have to be spoiled as I used the method through the months of March and April to avoid travelling through new seasons). It can be time consuming, but I found Judy in around 8 h not having the best set. I had more than 1 personality missing in my island, and thus found less snooties than other people who only had that personality missing.

I even found my dreamie during this time!

Or if she doesn't TT and you don't mind, you could get Judy for her as a little gift c:

I'm not against people selling or buying villagers, what I'm against is selling them for 100+ NMTs just because someone out there is willing to pay for it. These people don't even know what to do with the NMTs? They end up selling those anyways. But you know, people play the game however they want to.

I host giveaways for whenever I get a high tier villager (I gave away Raymond out of spite and just bc seeing his face reminds me that people out there are selling him for 400+ nmts and it upsets me lol) and back in New Leaf, I did giveaways for my cycling town for a while.

I'm just patiently waiting for Nintendo to release their Amiibos so I can start pumping these villagers out in an attempt to lower the price.

Imo, villagers with amiibos shouldn't sell for more than 20 NMTs. I'm planning to giveaway as many Marshals and high tier amiibo villagers as I can for Christmas or something :)

i feel like this isn't true though? i remember that before amiibos, marshal, and a lot of other tier one villagers, was selling for like 10-20+ million bells because he was so hyped up. popular villagers have always been sold at ridiculously high prices when games first come out, especially with the lack of amiibos.

eventually prices will lower for more affordable prices, but you can't fault sellers without realizing that other buyers play a role in this too.
Its been a while since I've been on here so maybe I'm just not remembering the prices correctly or I just got lucky when I did get my villagers. Sorry if I came across as rude cause I didn't intend to. I was just caught off guard by people throwing out 500 NMT bids because I didn't even know that was an achievable feat considering it takes me hours to get 7 haha. But good on them and if the market calls for it they can spend it how they want. I just feel like it's more competitive now with the introduction of NMT.

Personally I don't buy villagers from other people since I usually prefer finding them myself, but I can't fault people who don't want her to get some NMT to look for someone they really want. If they only want her to "turn a profit", that's still on them and the people willing to pay crazy amounts for her or Raymond. I've gotten quite a few NMT from trading in the past couple of weeks so I know it's possible to do without hacking, but it's really hard work to get a lot of NMT at once. :( If you gf is willing to wait for more affordable prices, I think that might be her best bet.

Have you thought about the campsite method? It's time consuming but you're guaranteed to get the villager you want-for free! I'm currently doing it to get Hazel, and then Raymond afterwards. Usually when I get a villager that I don't want but I know other people would want them, I ask my friends first if they'd like them, and if they dont, I give them away. I hate how people ask for absurd amounts for game pixels. Yes, Raymond, Audie, Judy, Sherb, and other tier 1-2 villagers are aesthetically pleasing, but come on! I'd rather make someone's day by giving them the villagers they've wanted for eons for free than charge an arm and a leg for them.

Your GF only has a great chance of getting Judy if she TTs & gets her from the campsite, or if she exclusively looks to trade on TBT. You can always find someone on here kind enough to help you get your dreamie for at least an affordable price. You can luck out sometimes too- yesterday on Nookazon, a user gave me Ankha for free for simply bidding on her & agreeing to wait a day! While Judy doesn't have an amiibo now, she will certainly have one before the year is out, so don't give up hope!
I agree with this person. Sure there are people asking for crazy prices, but honestly if you don't wanna pay those prices you can always put in the hard work yourself. And I've found there is a lot of very kind ppl here in the forums that sometimes give these crazy popular villagers for free. All of the villagers I've gotten from other ppl were completely free, you just gotta take your time looking for them. Either way, you have to spend time either tting, island hopping or scouring the forums.
And I honestly remember prices being pretty insane in new leaf as well, back in 2013 up to the point where we got amiibos. So it's not that the prices changed, just the currency. And well, raymond. But that's another topic.

I agree and disagree at the same time. In the end it's supply and demand. If I had Judy and was willing to give her away to anyone, how would I choose? There's so many people who want her, assuming your girlfriend was 1 of 100 people who wanted her, there's only a 1% chance I would choose her.

In the end people who buy villagers or bid on auctions for villagers are the ones who increase their chances of getting said villager and selling to the top buyer or at an offer the seller likes is how the seller will choose.

As much as I would love that people give dreamies away for free and what not, realistically it's not going to happen for popular villagers, esp ones without amiibos. You can lament all you want but everyone wants a chance at who they love no matter what it takes, even if it's 300+ NMT

Idk I just hate the idea of people selling villagers. Personally, I like letting villagers move in naturally, and letting them move back out if I'm not a fan. I could put up with the villager market in New Leaf because most of the prices were fair but I think it's hit a tipping point for me today. My girlfriend has a villager moving out and she's really, REALLY wanted Judy ever since she was announced. but everyone wants upwards of 300 nook miles tickets for her. it's absolutely absurd, and she just doesn't even have a chance :( There's not really any way to fix this issue since people will still continue to bid ridiculous amounts for the new villagers but it's just so upsetting that my girlfriend has absolutely no chance of ever getting Judy to move in.
i know, its crazy!

i would give her my judy since i don't like her, but I've already made a deal with someone else, sorry!

I don’t want certain popular villagers but if I see them I’ll get them anyway. Then I’ll look in the looking for thread and pm someone quietly and not charge anything. I don’t like charging for villagers much I might do an amiibo- a- thon one day and only charge 5nmt each only so that I could go villager hunting someday but that’s about it.

nmt being introduced definitely made things more intimidating especially with the new villagers but like, everything in ac sells. there are all kinds of ways to play the game but you can't expect people to not sell things that are considered valuable.

Yeah I feel the same. I subscribed here to give away Sherb. I could have made some money off him, but I want everyone to have a fair chance. So it was first come first served. I did received a tip and I was grateful, but everyone deserve the chance to have their dreamy.

Honnestly, I'm happy that most of my favorite villagers are not popular

The idea makes me uncomfortable as well, but I just don't participate with that part of the community. And I don't think it's fair to blame them for not getting a villager you want, even earning 2000 tickets is more guaranteed than Judy showing up randomly, you know?

In the end it's a good thing that you can even access them like this. Earning 300 NMT inside the game is ridiculous, but with some proper trading it should be doable. Craft some bait, open your island if someone is crafting and if it's a good one lots of people come and might tip you in NMT if you mention it. Or like 1 NMT for half an hour worth of meteor shower is 14 tickets in an hour. There's a lot of things you can do until a new amiibo pack is released.

I very much agree with this. Economics/accounting/general business management is a huge special interest of mine so I might be biased, but I personally love the fact that people sell villagers. When someone buys a villager they're paying for the person's time and energy spent both finding the villager and managing the thread they're selling the villager in. They're also paying for a service, ACNH chooses which villagers you find on islands/in your campsite randomly. Considering the vast amount of possible villagers, the fact that people even have the option to make that process less random is priceless.

You're paying for efficiency plus the person's time/energy plus bypassing a completely random system plus even more if the villager is in high demand and is wanted by most people, so when those factors are combined, it completely makes sense to put higher prices on villagers. While in a perfect world people would give away villagers for free, a perfect world would also allow players to choose any villager they want without getting them from someone else or having to go through the usual lengthy process.

I wasn’t but now I am ;-;
I wanted black cosmos and people were selling it for 150k each in discord. EACH. I feel a little riffed(word?) off. Cus i’m been selling my hybrids in bulk(20) for maybe like 200k. Like what. Makes sense why so many buy from me. Also do wonder if they even manage to sell hybrids with these prices.

Not really frustrated at that. People will buy it at those prices so why fault the sellers. I'm more frustrated at the length of time to move a villager out if you don't TT...

I feel this! I’m desperately looking for Chief cause he is my favourite cranky boy wolf with Fang and everyone selling him asks for 15+ nook miles minimum and although I have them I always feel iffy about paying to get a villager. I spent a ridiculous amount for Molly as well and dang it, I love her but it felt wrong.

I sold Sherb in the beginning for 30 NMT and it didn’t feel right honestly. I just give my villagers away for free now, my son has Stitches and has started expressing how he doesn’t like him so we’ll most likely be letting him go soon.
