Changing from Cartridge to Download

I currently have ACNH on a cartridge but would like to change to the download software. Can I do this without losing all my progress to date. I’ve been playing it for over a year now. Is it just a case of removing the cartridge then purchasing the downloadable version and installing it?
Any help would be appreciated.

How did you go about it. Did you have to restore from backup or is it just the case of installing the download version and carry on playing?

All I had to do was download the game and it worked right away. The save file is saved to the system rather than the cartridge, so the download version will read the save data from the same file location.

Just as an update, I downloaded from the eStore and it worked perfectly first time. Thanks for your help.
