Decorating Animal Villager Houses, yea or nay?

I love decorating my villagers houses, although it can get a bit tedious! What I do is order a bunch of stuff that'll look good and keep it in my closet. Then I do this:

When a villager is inside their house, I fill my pockets up with flowers except for the item of furniture I want them to have (so they can't give me a bunch of ugly shirts). Then I go inside their house then save the game, then repeatedly talk to them. Usually at some point they will ask to buy/trade for the furniture I'm holding, and I accept. Then when that's over I go outside, then go back in again and see where they've put the new furniture. If it's somewhere good, then I save, if it's badly placed or has replaced something good, then I quit without saving and do the whole thing again. I also do that for when villagers ask me to find furniture for them, so I can make sure they don't put it somewhere dumb in their house!
You can also do that process with shirts instead of furniture, once they buy it off you they will often change into it in front of you. If they don't, quit without saving and repeat.

It sounds long and boring, but it actually didn't take that long for me, and it's worth it when you get their houses looking awesome and you know you've given them somewhere really nice to live :-D

I always decorate/design my villagers homes, even though it is a pain in the butt. I still do their requests, so if they replace an item with something I always have to re-replace it. But I like my villagers having cute homes <3

Good thing I don't spoil my villagers by fulfilling their "hunt this and that" requests. Honestly I care MORE about the interior of my villagers' houses than my own.

Thank you for this omg I'm going to do this the next time I try to fix someone else's house LOL.

I don't really decorate their houses but I do try to fix it when they replace their furniture with something that doesn't fit in. -_- it gets annoying because you just don't know where they'll be placing the furniture you give them. I do deny insect/bug requests, ugh just no.

Thank you Trickilicky for this pro tip! I've never thought of doing that in such a....systematic way.
(come to think of it, it's kind of along the lines of getting them to ping for PWP or moving)

Sounds like a lot of fun~~~~
Will definitely try it later! ^^

Thanks guys. It took a while for me to work out the mechanics of it, but I got so fed up with them replacing their good stuff, that I decided to get all technical :p
The method has worked very well for me, the only thing is being patient and waiting for them to ask to trade. The only things they won't ask to trade for are items that they already have inside their house, and anything unorderable.
Good luck to anyone who tries it, I found it a bit addictive and turned it into a real project, but it's worth it to see them looking so stylin' ;-)

Really, I've gotten a few tips in this thread that I will absolutely try out. I'm deciding which villager will be my first victim. Probably Fauna and her Tiger butterfly. Maybe Lobo, last time I was in his home it was looking pretty barren.

I don't decorate a villager's house, but when they ask to bring new furniture I just give them furniture to increase friendship.

Well this is a downside; I haven't gotten any villager pics save for one from Chevre she sent after she moved. When you're so selective regarding their favors it takes much longer to get these. Though it might just be my bad luck. I do get random letters with gifts from the villagers so doesn't that mean their already friend level?

To be honest, I'd much rather control the placement of their houses rather than what's inside them x_x

I do this too. When I was still switching my villagers around I would spend at least an hour each doing the villager reset trick to get their plots in the perfect space. Except for Ankha, who came over unexpectedly after I traveled to my brothers town. I controlled where they put their houses and now I control what they can put inside it. They had better never forget that I'm the mayor. Though at this point it probably seems more like dictator.

I mean if you want to.. I wanted to do it but then I always think that it's their house lol. I shouldn't control it.

Well, clearly, you are a much more reasonable person than I.

I got tired of my villager's houses turning into an exhibit; if they want to see bugs/fish, go to the museum. I started turning down bug/fish requests weeks ago and try and give them furniture that match their personality and gender.

Sometimes I find myself giving out furniture to match their color. For awhile I kept trying to give Agent S blue things, for no reason other than the fact that she herself is blue.

I did this obsessively with all my villagers. It took forever, and a lot of resets. So IDK if you're ok with resetting. You kinda have to be, in order to do it how I did.

First, just like you, I stopped giving them bugs/fish. They don't care, they're still bff's with me. Just don't say you'll do it, when they ask say no. Also, I don't deliver anything from anyone to anyone else. It's usually/almost always and ugly shirt, or ugly furniture. No thanks.

Second, I don't bother sending anything in the mail. It's hit or miss. Sometimes you send it to them and they don't put it out, or they put it in a weird spot.

Third, the best way is to wait til one of these situations:

1. They ask you to give them a piece of furniture to replace one they have. This is the best because you know they will place it in that exact spot.

2. They ask you over to their house. You can keep talking to them while you're there, and they'll offer to let you buy something. This is a great opportunity to buy something ugly you want to remove from their house.

3. They ask you to bring a random piece of furniture of your own choosing.

So whenever one of these comes up, say yes, then save! Then wait until they are inside their house. If you give the furniture to them while they are outside, you don't know what's going to happen to it. If you have to log out and back into the game, do it, so they are INSIDE. Then go in, give them the furniture, and see what they do with it. If you don't like what they did, then reset and repeat.

Sometimes, they will say "I'll have to find a place for it later" and most of the time, if that happens, I'll walk outside and come right back in and usually they will have placed the furniture. Again, if I like it I save. If not, I reset.

Like I said, it's a lot of resetting. Also, remember that sometimes you'll get it perfect, then you'll come back another day, and they will have changed their clothes and put the ugly clothes in the place of some furniture you gave them. I HATE that, but there's nothing to do about it. So either don't give them rare furniture, or be willing to accept they might replace it.

Anyway, it takes forever, and it was a lot of work when I did it, but it was also fun because I got to decorate 10 more houses aside from my 4 characters. I really like the decorating aspect of the game. Plus, I decorated and chose clothes for my villagers in ways that I think really shows how much I care for them and their best assets. So in a way, it was controlling, which is bad. But it was attention I paid to them out of love. XD That's how I justify it. lol

I struggle with this.

On one hand, I like the idea that their houses are up to their own choosing of what to do with them. It feels a little invasive sometimes to try to force them to put out furniture that I like for them, even if they do make requests for replacements or additions.

On the other hand, the things they tend to want to put in themselves almost never match and don't make much of any sense for what their house interiors look like. (Kind of the same thing that happens when they start swapping the same atrocious shirts that clash horribly with their character colors.) And it's a bit excessive when they want me to catch lots of different bugs/fish to display in their homes. I turn down a lot of those requests (even if I still feel guilty for turning them down at all sometimes).

It's not a big deal either way, but I learn toward trying to change a few things for them, but I try to be tasteful about it and not make them get rid of all their furniture. Though I admit it's disappointing when they start putting their best stuff up for sale at Re-Tail or trying to get me to replace it with something new. I don't really want them to lose everything that was unique to their rooms from the start. That's not my choice to make, however. Sometimes the best I can do when they put something up for sale at Re-Tail is to buy it myself and either try to mail it back to them in a letter or wait until they ask to have more furniture replace.

TL;DR: I probably take it too seriously.

I do try to control what they have in their houses. The houses look much more cute and homelike if they are not just full of random junk.

I don't do bug and fish requests and I don't sell them stuff from my pockets. Even if they want to buy something that I want them to have, I won't sell because they might replace something else I gave them in their house. I also don't do random furniture requests because you never know where they'll put it.

The only times I give my villagers furniture are in two scenarios: If they ask me to replace a specific piece of furniture that I don't like and if I visit their house and buy something ugly. If I just bought something from a house visit I'll mail them a new piece of furniture that takes up the same amount of space and they'll always put it in the empty spot.

If they give or sell me a piece of their furniture that I want them to keep, I'll bury it behind their house and use it in one of the above two situations. Also if I find something I like for a villager's room I will also bury it behind their house.

Of course they are bound to pick up shirts or gifts from other villagers, but I don't mind too much. Now their houses are all pretty much in order so replacing a ugly shirt or something is not too bad.

Oh I forgot to mention something else that you can do if you don't want them to get rid of the good stuff in their house. A lot of times they'll put it up at Re-Tail. So to block that from happening, you have to take up all the avaiable 8 slots at Re-Tail yourself. You can put legit furniture, or even flowers and seashells. I like to keep my extra art there. It looks like a mini art gallery. :)

But the only drawback to this is that you don't have the chance for the cardboard furniture to show up there. I think after months of playing, I had 1 piece of that set show up at Re-Tail, and it just wasn't worth the wait to hold out for the other items. I finally just traded online for it, and took control of all the Re-Tail slots.

I do this with all my villagers, but it's pretty hard. I don't think I can cram in any more Lovely furniture into Midge's house, because every time I send her something she swaps another piece out. D:
