Do you find Youtube as a waste of time?

I mainly use it for music to play in the background while I’m doing other things so most of my homepage and recommendations are linked to songs I’ve recently listened to. I’ve been listening to a lot of the playlists that have been suggested which has helped me come across many great songs that I probably wouldn’t have discovered otherwise so I still find it very helpful.

Definitely not. My homepage is perfectly filled with some stuff the I'm interested in. And sometimes, it showed so videos from channels that i don't think I'll be interested in! Even if it's from 6 years ago, it really interesting. Youtube also sometimes recommended me some videos from underated YouTubers. I'm into gaming, arts and crafts, and animals. I'm surprised that youtube almost never failed on me.

i wouldn't consider it more of a waste of time than watching regular tv. the vloggers/celebrity gossip/clickbait garbage is the worst, but that's not what i watch so i just scroll past it. i don't think anything's really a "waste" of time if you enjoy it and it's not harming anyone/yourself.

I don't think so, although Youtube's recommended videos algorithm can be a pain. I'm picky about the creators I watch and I use the "Not interested"/"Don't recommend channel" buttons mercilessly, which helps, though sometimes Youtube will still manage to convince itself that I'm obsessed with some random topic I have no interest in. But overall I still think Youtube is a really great place to go for entertainment, music, educational videos, etc., and I'm always fond of the "cute animal video from 8-10 years ago that suddenly appears in everyone's recommended feeds" type of videos as well.
It's a bit extreme and you'll probably still have to fine-tune your recommendations for a while afterwards, but if you find that your feed is persistently full of a lot of negative/uninteresting stuff and it doesn't seem to be going away, clearing your watch history can give you a fresh start. It's been a while and I'm pretty happy with my feed now, but I've done this once or twice.

Not really because most of the things that get recommended to me are the things that I like such as Formula 1 and racing content. Though looking at the clickbaity mainstream stuff, I can't imagine lasting for a long time in there.

Most of my recommended is things I'm into and not what was described in the first post.
Also I spend nearly everyday with it playing music in the background because otherwise I will get bored fast of being online.

I don't spend much time on YouTube personally. I don't have an account and just go in as a guest occasionally to view a few videos here or there that I'm interested in. So I completely ignore all of the recommended videos and trending things.

I don't think it's a waste of time if you're enjoying it, but if you're not enjoying the stuff you watch then maybe you need to ignore your homepage, decrease your time on the site, or take of the steps recommended here by others to get things more in line with what you think would be beneficial for you.

I only use YouTube for game guides like FFXIV and ASMR to fall asleep. I avoid the trending like the plague cuz it’s all clickbait garbage. And then I get sad seeing the view counts on them. 😪

I dont like watching "content creators" or "life vlogs" or anything like that anymore because I do think they are a waste of time and I'm honestly not interested. However I think that there are some videos (like informative or how-to videos) that are actually really helpful and are not a waste of time. For example I've learned various hair styling techniques and cooking tips through YouTube, and also watched teaching videos about advanced science concepts to help me with my college classes. Plus just today I learned how to take my switch joy cons apart to replace the outer shell by watching a video on YouTube. I think there's a lot more to YouTube than internet celebrities.

I watch lots of videos on art I'm interested in, reptile videos, and video essays. I also like news channels and gaming channels. I get a lot out of youtube, but the algorithm sucks. I'm constantly fighting it to find new channels. I know there's a lot more great channels out there that youtube isn't showing me :\

I don't think the website it's self is a waste of time, but you could defiantly waste your time there if you're not finding what you want.

My little sister is addicted to youtube so I'm constantly listening to some dumb gameplay or something. I usually only watch animatics and music artists (gotta support my fellows!) on there because I feel like I could be watching something worth my time or doing something that will help me grow instead of waste time on there.

Maybe, I gotta stay away from my homepage. I watch lots of Nintendo content and history videos on gaming. I usually get some strange channels recommended to me with plush dolls and lots of Nintendo channels sharing the same old news lol with strange shock faces

Also while watching comic book videos, and checking on my homepage, I usually get sjw woke or broke etc.. I try to avoid them even clicking on the 'don't recommend this channel to me no more' but there's always another YouTuber with that content to show up....

As with anything, there's frivelous and slightly less frivolous uses for the platform. I enjoyed cooking shows back when I watched regular television, so the abundance of cooking channels on YouTube is a double-edged sword. Many of them are great and deliver unique, interesting, and/or helpful ideas in a manner that is entertaining. But you have to be cautious of some of the ones that offer fake or at the very least highly misleading advice.

The amount of helpful tutorials and show clips (and memes) also makes it a valuable thing to have. But as with anything, moderation is the key.

I do, however I still find myself going down the youtube rabbit hole, I try to only use it for music now

I recently realized Youtube content of my homepage is really horrible... drama, politics, click bate etc... in things I enjoy. I recently felt that maybe being on this website has become bad and a waste of time. I don't want to go on a rant but thoughts?

I actually really enjoy youtube, I watch a lot of channels on how to do things and little tricks of the trade. I also watch channels on youtube news about the latest going-ons. I find youtube fun, I watch gaming videos, I try to find opportunities through skills and I've more than a few times clicked on relevant ads that turned out to be valuable or further fun.

I think certain channels are a waste of time and brain cells. People like the vlog squad, the Pauls, etc. who never grew past the mental age of 15 are a huge waste of time. If you’re watching videos related to your field of study or your interests, it is not really a waste of time. So I suppose if your interest is immature boys who do stupid “pranks”, technically YouTube isn’t a waste of time in that case either.

Not necessarily. It depends on what you watch. I like Lets Plays, which aren't really productive in any way (though they entertain me), but I also watch makeup gurus to pick up tips, and lots of random documentaries. It's handy for music, especially because I find Spotify doesn't always have what I want to listen to.

I like that whenever I need to fix something, there's videos to show you how. Those have come in very useful at times XD

If you feel you're not getting any enjoyment out of it though, then don't bother with it.

I think it depends on what you use it for and what you watch. There are plenty helpful videos to teach you things but there is also a lot of petty drama. I personally think it's a great resource but can be a time waster if not careful.

It depends on how you use it! I use it for light entertainment in the background while I'm doing other things (working, playing games, etc) but don't actively seek to watch a whole lot of videos on it each day. Or I just put on a music playlist in the background. Sometimes I don't use it at all. It's all about moderation!

Most often I actually use it as a tool to solve problems or gain new skills when I'm trying to do something new. It can be quite helpful but I understand it's a rabbit hole. You watch one good video, look at the recommended ones, and look up and suddenly it's been 5 hours and your whole day is gone, haha. Happens to the best of us!

In some way, it's a waste of time but it's true that there's also interesting content that helps you learn something new. For example, I like cooking channels and that's how I learned to cook some recipes from other countries and when I want to give mi brain a break from work, I like to watch "paranormal" activity footages or playthroughs.
It all depends on the content you want and choose to see.
