Happy endings definitely. I've seen quite a few shows and movies with really sad endings that really affected me (shows with like 5 seasons and lots of suspense until the end when the main character dies for example). I kind of like them and it makes the story more unique with an unhappy ending, but after those few shows it's just too much for me anymore.

I prefer happy endings.

I don't mind some tear-jerker scenes along the way, or a healthy dose of angst here and there as the protagonists get to a happy ending, but I much prefer it (anime, books, games, etc) to end happily.

I like angsty beginning + middle, then a happy ending.
Because it's not hard to make a sad ending in that case. I want to see how they can still manage to give the main character happiness at the end.

Sad. It's more memorable and satisfying in a way. Like, realistically, things don't always turn out okay. I actually finished a book today that I expected to end happily, but it was honestly a sad mess. It fit the book really well. (The book was The List by Siobhan Vivian, and I do recommend it)

Both. There's no reason why an ending should be completely sad of completely happy. It also depends on the story itself.

Wow, I'm surprised so many people like sad endings. I prefer happy endings. Adds a ton of rewatch value for me compared to sad endings. I don't want to watch something again that's just going to make me feel depressed.

Agreed! I forgot to say something about that, too; I'm not going to rewatch or reread something (or replay a video game) which is depressing. For example, I watched "Grave of the Fireflies", and though it's genius, there's no way I'm going to watch it again.

Only a few media pieces have endings that have really, really stayed with me. They're usually not happy or sad, but do justice to the characters I've followed for so long.

Nothing will ever match the perfection of the ending of Six Feet Under, but M*A*S*H* comes pretty close.

I like sad endings if they're done right, but if they're not... I don't like them. And sadly, I haven't experienced a lot that're done right.

I prefer happier endings for that reason- as long as there are some consequences by the end.

Happy because if it's a sad ending I'm usually less likely to rewatch it again (I cry easily ;n; )

I don't really care, as long as the ending goes well with the book/series.
