Tragic endings.

Although it really does depend on how the story is told.

Basically something like Hamlet or Grave of the Fireflies where there is a cause and reason for main character deaths. I don't care so much about romantic relationships ending and stuff.

Main characters almost never have to fear of death because of their pivotal role. They'd get by it by their own efforts or a miracle.

A tragic end that explores death and sadness to me allows for life after death, whether it's untimely or inevitable. It becomes an open world, rather than happily ever after. What happens after that?

Surprisingly both! They are all good in their own ways. I definitely prefer a happier ending but sometimes sad endings can really make an impact on you and are great ways for me to cry xD

Like LambdaDelta mentioned years ago, I like endings that are done well (can be either happy or sad). :giggle:

I also like endings that are well done, regardless of whether they're happy, sad, or ambiguous. But I do have a slight preference towards tragedies, so I if I had to pick I would say sad endings.

I strongly prefer happy endings, even if it isn't realistic/necessary and makes the story a little corny as a result. I don't handle dark/sad themes very well, so even if it's really well-written, I tend to avoid stories with sad endings since I know I'd probably be really down about it for a while. ;u; Depending on the genre though, I don't mind a little bittersweet—some of my favorite shonen series had bittersweet endings, but I wouldn't want it in a romance.

My favorite movie, Titanic, has a sad ending. It makes me cry and feel horrible for days. I prefer happy endings because I don’t get why you would let a movie (or any fictional story) end on a sad note.

Sad, downer and tragic endings. I don't mind happy endings, but there's so many in movies these days that I'm tired of seeing it.

happy endings if they're not predictable. something like a superhero movie most of the time has a happy ending you can see cause oooo bad guy loses good guy wins. i want to see a bad person get a good ending, i like villain-y characters or even main characters that are bad people get some sort of positive resolution.

but i adore a good sad ending if it makes me feel some sort of way, i dont seek out "sad" media in general but if its really well written then sign me UP

As long as they’re executed well I don’t mind happy or sad endings. That being said, there are few things I hate in fiction more than an ending that’s a tonal whiplash from the rest of the story. If you’re going to have a happy or sad ending make sure there is proper build up.

happy endings, for sure. i know it’s not super realistic (or even possible) for every movie to have a happy ending, but i definitely prefer when they do haha. a movie ending on a sad note won’t affect my opinion of it or make me like it any less, but it will lowkey affect my decision to ever watch it again or not. i just... don’t think i have the emotional capacity to handle sad, or even bittersweet, endings tbh lol. they make me feel hollow and, i don’t know, incomplete? in a way that i can’t stand, to the point that i fixate on it for far too long and even sometimes wind up falling into a depressive episode.

this doesn’t mean that i don’t like sad endings or movies, because i do (especially when they’re executed well), i just have to be in the right headspace when i watch them so that i don’t fall apart afterwards. 😅

It depends on the mood I’m in and what the context of the movie is. Boy in the Striped Pyjamas???? that ending outright pissed me off. I get it was necessary, but it was horrible. The Green Mile? Necessary, but I sob every time. Every death in Harry Potter? wept and some weren’t needed.

However some sad endings are painfully good. Nights in Rodanthe that was such a sweet ending. I do love movies that bring you to happy tears. Like any cheesy romcom im probably going to cry at lol

Happy endings c:

I think a lot of us prefer happy endings, but sad endings can also work if done right. Oftentimes it can invoke thought when compared to a predictable conclusion.

happy endings but with plenty of angst that comes before it. i'm all for tragedy and turmoil etc. (and am guilty of writing plenty of it) but only if it leads up to a happy ending. much more satisfying that way. i saw titanic used above as an example of a sad movie, but it does technically end happily. (rose passes away in her sleep and is reunited with jack in heaven.) definitely a case of turmoil leading ultimately to a happy ending, which is always my cup of tea. maybe it can be predictable, but who's to say predictable is bad. plus, all my stories are lgbt+ themed and god knows too many of our films/stories end with tragedy as it is. seriously no need to add to it any time soon.

Happy endings. If it ends with sad ending, I wouldn't stop crying for weeks lol.

I'm fine with either sad endings or happy endings, ultimately I just want it to be a good ending that works with the entire story.
