After my friends got in an argument yesterday about live action vs. anime movies, I felt the need to post this.
It happened after I brought up the movies by Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli with them. I personally am a big fan of their films and loved the three I've seen so far (Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and Ponyo) and am hoping to see more, especially The Wind Rises. None of my friends have seen as many of Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli's films as I have, but I do have a friend that has seen Ponyo and also admitted that he was a major fan of anime movies. The rest, however, bashed anime films, with one saying that live action movies are the best kind, especially superhero movies, such as those made by Marvel. I like live action movies too, but honestly, I've gotten tired of Marvel movies, especially because my dad has literally watched The Avengers 100 times since it came out in 2012.
I know that friends can like different movies, as my parents have different tastes in them themselves. My dad not only loves Marvel movies but also Star Wars movies, and has loved them since he saw the first film in theaters when he was only 10 years old in 1977. My mom, on the other hand, loves movies from the 1950s. This caused a lot of teasing by my dad after they got married in 1997, but I don't see why such a bitter argument had to happen among my friends because of movies. Nevertheless, what's your preference?

I prefer live-action movies because no matter how good animated movies are, it's hard to shake the fact that they just don't look realistic. That being said, I don't mind animated movies when they're clearly not realistic movies anyway. Like if half of the movie is going to be gun-fire and **** blowing up, then it isn't as important to me for it to look realistic.

I'm a big fan of film and animation in general but not really anime. Just never did it for me. As for whether I'd rather take live action over animation; it totally depends on what I'm going for. Animation is usually (but not exclusively) aimed more towards kids so it'll be more light-hearted and fluffy while live action runs the gauntlet of genres. Wouldn't say one is better than the other, they're two different things and have their moments.

live action. i don't like anime. the plots are usually stupid & i hate how their voices are overly exaggerated most of the time
i don't like live action though

sounds like u watch a lot of anime tbh

I enjoy both animated and live-action movies. I haven't watched enough anime movies in particular (or anime in general for that matter) to have a full opinion on them. Although I'd love to watch some more Ghibli films. I've only watched Princess Mononoke so far and I have heard many good things about the others

animated, 90% of the live action movies (which were superhero movies) were mind numbingly boring

Some things look/work better as animation, other things look/work better in live action. Both have strengths and weaknesses. Though there isn't enough mature content coming from one in American film/TV *cough* *cough*

If more anime films were animated the way Kingsglaive was, I'd probably watch them more often. Kiki's Delivery Service & other Studio Ghibli films were part of my childhood (like Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, Anastasia, Thumbelina, etc.) which is why I watch them still but outside of that I tend to separate anime movies from what I watch lol

I don't really care if a movie is anime, animated, or live action. I only care if it has a good story, memorable characters, and is well-directed. :p

Before I get to my opinion I group anime and animation together because all anime is is animation, but it's from Japan. So tbh I don't see the point separating anime and animation in this argument because at the end of the day it's all the same thing, just from different places in the world. Okay so now lets get to my opinion about the topic, I've always found something magical, I guess is the word, about animation. I think it's amazing how with animation you can go against all laws of our world and have whatever you want happen, as long as your world stays consistent because if it's not then it just gets annoying. So I way prefer animation over live action to the point where I like to go see every animated movie that gets a theatrical release in the USA in theaters with friends, even if it doesn't look good or if I've heard it's not too great. Unless it's really really bad, like Norm of the North, then I'm not wasting my money on that garbage.

I likely shouldn't have made that distinction, but that was what my friends did yesterday, which is why I did so in the poll...

Well widening it to all animation rather than just anime (because there's not really any point being so specific with the question asked), it depends on what it is.

I look more at it aesthetically. Some things from animation just wouldn't work with live action, or would require so much CGI that you could still pretty much call it an animated movie (and I don't care how far CGI has come, it's still glaringly obvious 90% of the time). Some things aren't as much of a 'spectacle' when it's animated compared to using live actors, locations, etc. Or there's even just movies that almost ask "why bother?" in terms of animation, because there's nothing really about the movie that couldn't be pulled off with live action that animation would really improve upon.

I think Lilo & Stitch, Zootopia or Wreck it Ralph would have been awful if they were in any way live action. Similarly, Total Recall, Back to the Future or Evil Dead might have still been 'alright', the plot and everything would still be there, but they wouldn't have had nearly as much impact if they were animated.
Heck, take something like Mad Max: Fury Road, where one of the biggest hooks was its use of practical effects. Not a point of interest that really transfers to animation very well, because it's just not that remarkable when its animated.
