I know a lot of people dislike history in general, but what about all those who enjoy learning/discussing history?

I genuinely prefer modern history due to the fact that tactics, weapons and ways to recruit and persuade people grew significantly and gave way to some tactics that people use today.

So, what is your preference? Why?

ancient, its so interesting to learn what ancient ppl did

Do people tend not to like history? I love it and I've always loved teaching it. I do general teaching on all subjects, not specialised in anything, but I make a point of the history lessons being interesting and exciting.
I love ancient and modern but I probably enjoy ancient more. I think everybody should learn about what happened way before our time, I just find it fascinating. Gives a lot of perspective too

I really enjoy ancient, especially when it comes to art. I always think about the question "What did people in ancient times do to amuse themselves?" and a lot of that time the answer is in the art. I think it's really cool how some of the pieces really capture daily life in different cultures of that time c:

I think history class takes the fun out of learning about history - I'm just interested in knowing the facts but then the teacher assigns all these tests/assignments that I would rather not do. Modern and ancient history are both equally interesting to me.

i love ancient history, i always loved taking history and learning about things in the past, so i'd have to say ancient history. modern history doesn't really wow me as much.

It's my time to shine. In school I was always really bad at any of the other subjects, whenever I would get to history I would be enjoying myself to the fullest, because no matter what it was I always loved learning about any history at all, I like ancient but I also like history from the 1800s and up, all the way until present day, and I wanted to go to school to be a history teacher. However, like I said I didn't do very well in school so I don't know if that's my best path. As terrifying as it is, I loved learning about the Great Depression and World War 2, because facts like that just make me happy. Obviously not what happened, but the information itself. It kept me intrigued, which was really hard to do and I thought I was just a hopeless student, so anything I can find interest in with my ADHD/Depression is good for me. So hard to keep me interested and into something, because I usually gave up. Learning about the colonies and Civil War was always interesting to me, pretty much anything with factual information where I learn things. Usually hated school, but when it came to anything historial, big or small, I absorb it like a sponge. I loved the Greek/Roman goddesses and anything to do with Mesopotamia, anything. The Trojan Horse, learning about "300," even though it wasn't exactly like the movie. That was definitely my favorite, actually. Greek and Roman history. Especially their gods/goddesses.

I'm a student of all history but particularly enjoy the Great War (i.e. World War I). It was the beginning of the modern age of warfare. Look at a picture of a solider from any country at the start of the war and compare to a photo from just a few years later. They look like something out of the 19th century and by the end they don't look much different from a modern soldier. It was the first war where all these major newly industrialized countries fought a pitched battle against each other for the first time and produced many of the military and medical innovations that are used today. The first tanks, planes (in military use), and modern tactics were all shaped out of that war. World War II was much larger in scale but it was a continuation of the Great War, both wars were brutal but seeing old style 19th century tactics like human waves against fortified trenches was an absolute slaughter. Fascinating stuff and it shaped the world we have today. I'll stop geeking out over it now. :p

P.S. Check out Indiana Neidell's series 'The Great War' on YouTube, he covers all the major events of the war week by week and has some great specials. Dan Carlin does a fantastic podcast as part of Hardcore History on the war as well and it's free!

I take both modern and ancient history at my school and I prefer ancient history as it is so much more interesting but it's sooo much harder than modern history

I don't know how but everyone who takes both agrees

thank you very much for sharing those links!! I'll definitely watch them.
but I completely understand where you're coming from. the 'great wars' are certainly something I enjoy learning about! I mean, looking from every other perspective, there is almost always something new to learn.
