Does anybody else LIKE the fact that the villagers are nicer in New Leaf?

I like that they're nicer. I remember being frustrated that the ONLY "nice" female personality in the original game seemed to be the Peppy ones. The Normals were almost as mean as the Snooties, often! I don't know about the Cranky villagers, cus I liked that I had to work to get Static's approval, but at the same time it helped that he was cute.

I'm glad they made them nicer overall. I agree that the Cranky ones could be a BIT more cranky.. but otherwise I'm cool with not feeling like an "outsider". A lot of the original game felt tailored to make you feel ostracized, especially during holidays and stuff.

In WW, I got along with the cranky villagers the best. I guess I liked them the best because they weren't all-up-in-your-business all the time. They pretty much left you alone. The cranky villagers are watered down now, but I don't mind. I don't mind any of the personalities really, I get along with all of them, after all it is just a game.

i kinda miss the old crankies, but they're still just fine in NL :3

if anything, they seem to be more TSUNDERE than cranky..
at least fang is quite tsundere sounding!

"Yeah, I like to dress up now and again. WANNA FIGHT ABOUT IT?! D//:<"

But seriously, since New Leaf is my first game, I don't believe I can really criticise the personalities with the previous games, but I... I kind of second the escapism aspect of the game and enjoy that all my neighbours are super nice. .__. When I'm not in class or holed up in the school's student studios doing my personal artwork, I live in a very poor area, which... well, a negative air surrounds because everyone's poor and stressed from work. Since I'm the type of person whose mood adapts to their environment, I'd rather be around optimistic people, even if they be pixels. ;u;

TL;DR: The New Leaf characters ease my mind from the real world and help me sleep well at night.

I would like them to be meaner if I am honest. If they're too nice then you can't see much of the personality differences but that might be just me. I liked Blaire and Tiffany for how mean and stuck up they were.

Personally i liked it when it was easier to make people angry. Now the only error i get for insulting a villager when they ask me something is usually no item. Now getting the prize is almost to easy

No, I hate it. I loved it when the snooty and cranky villagers where actually just that! They're all normal villagers to me now with different dialogue. =/

NL is the first AC game I've played, but I remember when I created my first town and found out about the different personalities, I just couldn't figure out what was up with Wolfgang. I was actually quite shocked when I found out he was supposed to be a Cranky villager, so I think they could stand to be a little meaner.
The Snooty villagers probably could stand to be a meaner as well especially because if they're going to be rude to me, I'd rather they say it to my face than all passive-aggressively.
I think the Normals and others could be not meaner, but maybe a little more honest. I mean, seriously, I don't like when people fake politeness with me IRL, so I could certainly do without it in a video game. If they don't want to hang out with me, then okay. Just say so. Don't act like I'm a 5-yr-old who needs to be put down for a nap.

This inspired me to turn my GC game on again.

THIS. This this this. This is my relationship with Lulu the hippo.

And I miss that. Yes, the villagers in NL are too nice for my taste. I like the snooties though...

I find Uchi villagers can be very rude and arrogant so there is still an unfriendly type. Cranky is more like a fatherly type now, they should've really renamed it to Gentleman or Senior or something instead of trying to pass it off as Cranky, I think they only did that to avoid a fan backlash.

Oh this. All of this.

Uchi villagers are funny, but they can be a bit shady and mean. Especially when you've repeatedly talked to them and they go, "Why do you keep talking to me? Awkward!" It made think that my Uchi loathed me and my friendship with her went down each time I talked to her and was annoying her.

Cranky villagers are definitely more fatherly like too. They even say something similar when you've talked to them so much and they say, "Whoa slow down [character name]! Okay, now tell papa what's wrong." Or when they invite themselves over to your house and say how they wanna see how you live so they can make sure you're doing well.

I really like the change in Wolfgang.
He was mean and insulting in WW and in New Leaf, he's a proper, adult male who has a wall around him, but when that wall falls, he's your best friend!

Nope, I don't care for these watered-down personalities at all. I loved the snootiness of the snooty villagers and the grumpiness of the crankies. The villagers have a 'mass-produced' feel now, if that makes sense.

I love that the villagers are so nice. I've been shocked by the rude things they've said in the past. xD

Think about it...it's a children's game. The gamemakers simply can't make a kids game about cute pink squirrels that call you ugly, or call you a jerk. Heck, if you were a 6 year old, a simple word like "stupid" could be somewhat startling, especially if it's coming from a tiny purple duck.

People in the real world tend to be so mean; I love getting into AC and having villagers really listen and talk to me.

(wow, that sounded so desperate. it's a video game. *facepalm*)

edit; Oh lord, don't even get me STARTED on Resetti. He was absolutely terrifying in CF. xD I'm glad little kids cried at him and they severely toned him down in NL!

Society on a whole honestly views children as WAY too sensitive these days, and tries to molly coddle them in games, with political correctness, its honestly ridiculous

i doubt any of us who played the gamecube game when we were little, were scarred or deeply upset by what our villagers said to us (i know i wasn;t, and i was 5!) it just made us have more of a village, you're not going to like everyone whos in your village, thats the point, theres always going to be abrasive personalities you don't like, like in real life, it made it more exciting having villagers you actually despised and wanted out of your town for personal reasons :p now the game largely bottles down to not liking villagers due to appearance.. so in a way thats even worse, children can't differentiate through the villagers as much as they used to, so largely they will just like the cuter villagers..

Resetti terrifiying? i doubt a child will go through life without being told off once in their life..

Eh, I'm kind of torn.

On the one hand, the NL versions themselves are alright. But when you compare them to the original versions, then yeah, it's rather disappointing.

I never once had any problem with "rude" villagers, and while that's primarily because I've just never given a hoot about what others think, it's also because I'm used to people like that.

People come in all shapes and sizes; some are good, some are bad, others are stuck somewhere in between.. that's just life. Teaching kids that you're going to encounter all sorts of people is a good thing. If you constantly coddle them, it actually teaches them to be more sensitive to harshness, because they're not accustomed to it, therefore they're caught off guard and don't know how to react when they are approached by jerks.

I'd much rather have my kid play Animal Crossing and learn about the diversity of personalities that are out there, and then end up prepared to face a variety of people, than have a sheltered, overly-sensitive child who's going to be like a deer caught in the headlights when they're approached by a not-so-nice person.

At the end of the day, preparing your kid for the worst is always better than pretending that bad people (and things) don't exist.

Bleh, I don't the rudeness of some characters added some charm and uniqueness to the game. Phyllis just isn't the same.

New Leaf's cranky villagers are pretty much like my friends in real life-- they're so normal, but I like them! I have a grown friend who would not visit Samson's house because he told my friend to go lose weight. I laughed when my friend told me that, he knows it's just a game- but it was really cute to see the sensitive side of him getting offended over a jock villager in a video game.

Personally, I like that they're a bit nicer, or that their personality isn't "black and white". The cranky villagers in New Leaf reminds me of the cynical people I know in real life; the kind of people who put on a hard shell, but are really sweet in the inside. I think some of them are still rude in New Leaf versions. XD

Your post has made me realize how people in the real world can be real nasty, so it's wonderful to be able to greet villagers without them joining in and being rude to you.
Although I like the City Folk personalities better, it's still good in New Leaf.

I agree with all of these posts that say there was much more variety in the conversations whenever villagers were meaner. I had Valise and Monique forever in my GameCube town. Both were snooty. Valise, I hated. I was mean to her, she was mean to me. She gave me a reason not to like her, and it made things really exciting. Monique was snobby, but she was gossipy rather than straight up mean. I got along with her better. I didn't push her or hit her with a net. Therefore, in spite of them both being snooty, they had a totally different affect on me.

Whereas now, even if I treated Gwen and Velma differently, I'd still get the same conversations. Even if I were mean to Velma (I could never be mean to Gwen), she would give me an "I'm disappointed in you" quote, walk around ticked or sad, and then it's back to the same old stuff.

I feel like if some characters would be slightly mean in the game that would be able to prepare kids for dealing with rude people in the future. That's valuable, right?

I think it's a bummer that the characters' personalities are, well, so bland now. Don't get me wrong, I still love the game, but I always thought it was hysterical when I'd get insulted by the cranky villagers in the other games and I miss that. Everyone's kind of the same now. That's something that appealed to me, how much personality each and every character had. It really added something extra that's just missing now. Oh well, I guess you can't have everything.

No, I hate it.
This is one of the things that I really don't like about New Leaf.
It doesn't ruin the game for me but I still prefer the Gamecube game. Always will.
