I've been playing New Leaf since it came out but only just now found out that you can customize the hot plate with a pizza thanks to this thread. That's pretty great.
In regards to strictly furniture display pieces, it's hard to beat the dessert case since there is so much cake in it. It's like a bigger and better version of the afternoon-tea set. While I like that the afternoon-tea set fits a variety of pastries on it, it looks a bit gaudy and out of place with most furniture sets I put it with, so it loses some points.
I'm also a fan of the yule log, since I heard about them from friends a few years ago and actually made one this year. They taste pretty good and the idea of it looking like a log is neat.
As far as food that is consumable is concerned, my favorite is probably the chocolate cake. It looks pretty great if you put it on display in your house.
(Believe it or not, I actually don't eat many sweets at all throughout the year. Usually only on holidays. Maybe that's why I like so many of them in New Leaf!)
Finally, the Famous Mushroom is pretty great. I've tried eating mushrooms a few times but I don't really enjoy the flavor or anything. That said, I like the Mario-effect the Famous Mushroom gives you for a few seconds after you eat it. You also earn a pretty nice amount of bells if you sell it at Re-Tail.

It's more for a fancy tea party room you have to put it well to work very good and that why it say tea set
But the dessert case is what you always see in stores but yeah its very cool looking

Personally, my favourite food items would have to be the StreetPass Ice creams. Holding then is cute in itself, but eating them is really cute, too! Too bad they take on the appearance of the brown bear bags when placed into your home...
