I've only felt awkward twice. One was when I was getting some items I didn't have yet. The person was going to press the minus button and I told them not to do that. I wanted to give a reason, but I don't type fast enough in this game as I would be able to on websites. The second time I've felt awkward was pretty recently. I was given Biff for free. As much as I appreciated finally being able to adopt Biff to move onto my island, it just didn't feel right not paying up. Even when I gave TBT to this person, they ended up giving it back to me. Don't get me wrong, it's great that I was able to get Biff for free, but still, I kind of felt awkward about it.
Is it really awkward when you are given things for free? I like giving things away to make people happy. I don’t want to make anyone embarrassed 😞

Personally, I think it feels awkward because it's so unexpected (assuming the trader didn't preface their post with "giveaway"). We're so conditioned to think that we need to input something to get something in return.

I'm curious to see what other folks think about this.

When you're given a villager for free, yeah. I feel obligated to give something in return. That's just how I was raised.
I understand and I find it hard to take things for free. As long as someone accepts a little thank you it would be ok?

Yes. This, X1000. I've been told I come off as super nice and polite but I ALWAYS feel awkward. I always worry I made a mistake. Or think "Should I have used THAT reaction? Am I coming on too strong? Too indifferent? Uh oh, I went the wrong way... will they think I'm doing something bad?" People complain about the time it takes for the game to load when you travel, with the whole airport sequence, but I NEED that. I need to get myself prepared and try to hype myself up 😝

EDIT: And, for the record, all my interactions have been lovely and everyone's been nice. But I just overthink things!

i'm the same but also a hypocrite when it comes to it in that i gladly give things for free and refuse things cuz i'll feel bad and then if i get something for free or even discounted i feel i gotta still pay or i'll feel guilty.

yes yes this sooo much. this is what i was trying to explain but i am awful with words.

I never boot people off after a trade and I make a point when arranging a trade to tell the person I will leave via airport. I get that it's faster but there has been too many instances of somebody using the "-" button and losing things from it. A villager not actually moving in, no star fragments washing up after a meteor shower, etc. So to avoid any potential issues for the bug that tends to crop up, I make a point to specify airport only regardless if I'm hosting or visiting. It definitely helps cut out the awkwardness as well since both parties know what is expected for ending the trade before it begins.

I’ve never been kicked out via - and would not be okay with anyone doing it after a trade. I also tell traders I’ll leave via airport and ask those visiting my island to do the same.

I'm incredibly awkward and already was in NL. I've usually done more streamlined trades (like dropping things where you are or going to Re-Tail back in NL) but of course that's not possible with adoptions, where it can take longer to reach a villager. I'm always very careful to avoid accidentally breaking any rules or doing something rude.

Though my #1 source of awkwardness is the in-game chat. I just have trouble with the keyboard for some reason, especially now that we have to navigate the whole keyboard. Reactions help somewhat but... yeah. It would be awesome if we could have some pre-saved messages, like greeting and thanks, to make it easier.

i had no idea things like that happened. i mean i guess that explains the awkward wait time before they end though at least all the ones i've been lucky enough to have even if it was awkward they were always kind and made sure everything was as expected (that i got all items ect.).

I feel the same way. There have a been a lot of members here that have been helping me for free or asking for little in return. I greatly appreciate it, which is why I feel a but awkward when they return a tip or say they don’t need anything in return. One of these people crafted me a bunch of frozen stuff and gave me a few pirate pieces for free and ordered me full sets from his catalogue. How can I not thank him for that; the most i can do though is say don’t hesitate to let me know later no matter how rare an item it is you want to ask for my help, and to show the same kindness to other members. I still want to get these kind people something in spite of them having everything.

Then there was a member who sold me Raymond when a potential trade for him fell through. I think he wanted to keep him but he sold him to me for the same price i was offering the guy who wasn’t responding to any of the offers in the thread. So, even though I gave him a lot for him, I also felt like what I gave him was not enough to repay the kindness he did for me. So yeah, even trades that weren’t free, I feel awkward when I feel like they gave me more than needed.

yessss so much. i'm lucky enough to use the app so i pre type before i land (like i get to tell them i like their island from the fly over or ready a hi) but pre set things like you said would be amazing to have. i'm such trash with words and spelling as is so it'd help tons.

I honestly had no idea we could do this using an app. Are you talking about the Nintendo Online app? Typing on a phone would at least be slightly easier 😅

Yeah, unfortunately it's just a bug. It was an issue during initial release and then was patched, only to come back up again more recently. I highly recommend only using the airport, but more importantly making sure everybody is on the same page. I will also specify when payment is traded vs speaking to a villager in terms of adoption and if there is going to be escorting. For example, I usually will escort somebody there and back to the airport and will ask if they want to do the same when I'm the one who is adopting. The only time I will use the - button to disconnect is if somebody comes to my island and breaks off from the agreed upon set up. :)

I use the Nintendo Online app as well! Another trick I saw from Reddit or YouTube was to hold a wand and name wand outfits after commonly used phrases ("Welcome!/Hello!", "Here are your items!", "Tysm!", etc.)

Well I learned something new today! I didn’t realize that booting people made it so the gates could close and you don’t have to go close them.
I was booted twice before and both times I was very confused on what happened and maybe a little hurt lol but now that I know why people do it I won’t have any problem with it anymore :)
I probably still would never just boot someone cause it would just feel mean to me, even if I don’t mind being booted.

Glad I'm not the only one feeling this way - whenever I have people coming over to adopt my villagers, they step out of the house and do a happy reaction and say thank you, and I start walking, then realize I should react back. I react back and we awkwardly walk to the airport 🥴
