I think that things do get a little awkward when someone's typing since it takes so long in NH. I just stand there while they type and wait. It's just part of the game that I've accepted since the typing is really bad unless you have the app.

When I drop off stuff, I usually say a thanks/ np and then head to the airport. If they wanted to end the session, they'll usually do it before I get to Orville. I don't wait or ask.

I tend to just ask "ok to head to airport?" in those moments where the host hasn't specified their town rules in advance so I know it's okay to leave freely and they aren't moving or speaking.
Pretty much for the reason you stated in not wanting anyone to think I'm taking off somewhere.

Using the nintendo app kinda helps for typing with that.

and start to walk back to the airport in thinking ok time to go i got my stuff said thanks it's time to leave only to get sent home mid walk

honestly, this was how i felt after my first couple of trades when nh came out. i made my account here on the forum in 2015 when i played nl but didn't do much with it. i became more active with nh and have been doing more trades/etc since then. i had the same experience of someone ending the session as i took 2 steps back to their airport to go back home. i was thinking the same way you were, like did i do something wrong. turned out, it's just how most users like to end their trade session. no harm done, most of the time.

you'll get used to it the more you trade and really, reading through your post i feel like you're a kind person who respects other people and their belongings. i wouldn't have anything to worry about on your part. if you unfortunately have to come across someone rude in the future, hopefully you don't, and you continue to do what you've mentioned aka respecting people's rules on their island + have common courtesy, then that's on the other person and their own problems. just keep a mental note and not do any trades with them to save yourself the trouble :) all in all, you just gotta trade and interact more to get used to how things are! don't overthink things too much!

I honestly had no idea we could do this using an app. Are you talking about the Nintendo Online app? Typing on a phone would at least be slightly easier 😅
yeah it makes things easier a bit but not much as i have a switch light so phone in one hand trying to type while trying to play in the other without dropping at least one (always my phone cuz switch was way more and a gift) is super hard unless i prop up my lite and use my cheap pro controller.

I use the Nintendo Online app as well! Another trick I saw from Reddit or YouTube was to hold a wand and name wand outfits after commonly used phrases ("Welcome!/Hello!", "Here are your items!", "Tysm!", etc.)
holy balls thats really clever dang...people are good at this

Glad I'm not the only one feeling this way - whenever I have people coming over to adopt my villagers, they step out of the house and do a happy reaction and say thank you, and I start walking, then realize I should react back. I react back and we awkwardly walk to the airport 🥴
lolz thats kinda awesome though cuz at least you can both be awkward together.

sadly even with the app it's kinda meh. i have it and it takes only a tad shorter.

as silly as it might sound i never thought of asking if it was ok to go back to the airport...that might be my main issue right there aside from just over thinking. i really never thought to ask...i'm so stupid sometimes. 🤦‍♂️

very true. thanks i just treat others how i know i would want to be and how i was raised. so far i never had a bad trade ever on here. like many have said i just over think and i've been so used to NL trades that NH kinda tossed a fast ball at me somehow. but i adore everyone on this site i've had the pleasure of talking to or trading with so i know it's not them lolz. and i just found out today that when they boot it closes the gates so it's easier for em and i didn't know that. but i just like letting them leave via air port cuz it's fun to watch people walk out lolz.

As a host, I used to boot people from my island to save the both of us time, but I've stopped doing that now after hearing that there could be save file issues associated with booting. I never meant it as a warning to the person I was trading with or as an indication of how badly I thought of them.

I feel like the awkwardness that comes with trading is partly attributed to how slow it is to type... I don't have a USB keyboard and I don't often have my phone nearby when I'm playing, so I'm a very slow typer.

I've also learned that it's good to directly ask people in VMs or on Discord or whatever what their preferences might be before going to their town, or directly displaying my rules in my shop so that everyone is clear about the expectations that people may have before trading.

Honestly, for me, the more I've traded, the more comfortable I've felt doing it!
(I think it also helps that I lived on my own in a foreign country for a couple years, so I got used to having to make many awkward, real life transactions. Somehow, Animal Crossing trades seem a lot less scary to me than say, going to sort out paperwork at an administrative office or buying a weird assortment of groceries at the store).)

I do the "greeting" reaction when I get there/they arrive, then go immediately into the trade. When done, if I'm a visitor, I say "tysm!" and the joy reaction. Then I do another greeting, say "bye!" and head for the airport. Typing messages is a pain, so I do very little of that. If I trade through here, I usually add a comment to our conversation, like "I loved your island", rather than trying to do that on island. I know as somebody who hosts trades occasionally, I don't expect much. I think you're fine with minimal talk and just leaving after a "bye". If they want to follow you to the airport, they can do that. (one problem I have is that I get lost easily, so I have to check the map so I know where I'm going! LOL)

I feel the same way. There have a been a lot of members here that have been helping me for free or asking for little in return. I greatly appreciate it, which is why I feel a but awkward when they return a tip or say they don’t need anything in return. One of these people crafted me a bunch of frozen stuff and gave me a few pirate pieces for free and ordered me full sets from his catalogue. How can I not thank him for that; the most i can do though is say don’t hesitate to let me know later no matter how rare an item it is you want to ask for my help, and to show the same kindness to other members. I still want to get these kind people something in spite of them having everything.

Then there was a member who sold me Raymond when a potential trade for him fell through. I think he wanted to keep him but he sold him to me for the same price i was offering the guy who wasn’t responding to any of the offers in the thread. So, even though I gave him a lot for him, I also felt like what I gave him was not enough to repay the kindness he did for me. So yeah, even trades that weren’t free, I feel awkward when I feel like they gave me more than needed.
I'm so grateful to have Biff. It was a night not that long ago when someone on this site asked if I wanted Biff or Rudy, because Mott has moved out and I needed a jock to take his place. I'm not mentioning his name because I'm not sure if he'd be OK with me doing that, so if he sees this, he knows who he is. 🙂 But he gave me Biff for free. Usually I've always heard about people spending a lot of Bells, TBT, or NMTs to adopt a villager moving out, but he didn't ask. I even asked if he was sure and he still declined. So even after getting Biff to move in, I gave him a lot of TBT (at least a lot in my opinion), but he just ended up giving it all back. So I felt bad, but you can't force someone to take something. Still. But I'm just so glad I have Biff now. He was a villager I had on the GameCube.

The first ever trade I did was for a bunch of cardboard boxes because I didn't have enough for the item request one of my amiibo villagers gave me. After I got the boxes though, I walked to the airport and was actually about to talk to Wilbur before the guy I got the boxes from ended the connection.
I said thanks and everything. All I can think of is that some people are impatient and don't want to go through the whole animations for someone leaving.

I don't know, but you definitely are not alone.
I feel awkward/anxious during the trade itself also.

edit: Typo.

In the beginning, I felt awkward going to people's towns because no one would escort me like how they used to New Leaf. Everyone just let's you free roam. I get so paranoid that they'll think I'm doing something bad, or if I get lost they might think I'm up to no good..

But I also feel awkward when I don't know if they're gonna boot me or if they want me to go to the airport. Or if they wanna walk me back. We end up just having a few seconds of awkwardness waiting for someone to make a move. But I usually just start walking back myself and if they boot me on the way, even better, since it's faster. I don't really get offended or paranoid about it since it was so normal in New Leaf. Honestly, I prefer it. But the norm has become walking back to the station now. As long as I don't get lost on my way back, I don't get too worried.

I know what you mean with the after trade silence that can happen sometimes, i usually just ask people if i should go back or would they rather end it themselves. I also felt bad after i got booted out for the first time in nl, i was walking back like in your case. I felt like that because i was worried they might have thought i was trying to ruin their town, but i learned later that it was often the norm to end sessions this way so i felt better and now i dont really mind getting booted out. Also, the person i traded with didnt actually scold me for doing that in the place we used to arrange the trade so it is most likely they understood i was new and just trying to go back using the train station.

I definitely relate. I usually ask, "Want me to leave via airport?" Or something along those lines, which helps a tiny bit, but it's still awkward

Outside of the usual greeting when someone arrives on my island or I arrive on theirs, if it's a trade on here, I don't really say much other than "sent the tbt" and "ty." Since it takes an annoying amount of time to type things in this game, time enough where someone could just head back to the airport and have left by the time I could finish a sentence, I tend to just send a message to the other person here on the forums, thanking them for the interaction and whatnot. Keep things moving quickly and takes the pressure off. I'm not particularly adept at socializing either, so while I don't really experience this to the degree you've expressed, I can see how one could feel that way. It might help to find a particular routine to follow.

I think that everyone have different island rules, but if you are not sure just ask, I normally just say ty and walk to the airport.

I voted yeah and I meant yeah I feel awkward and you're not the only one, and not yeah you're the only one.

That's why I try to not trade. It's just awkward for me. I always get nervous before a trade.

Early in the game, before I learned of the Nintendo app, all I did was reactions to convey that I was ready to trade/thank the visitor/say goodbye. But the trader would be typing out his greetings and all I had were reactions and I felt terribly inadequate and awkward. :eek:o_O

Once, doing cataloguing, I dropped the item after picking it up and it did not drop back to the spot it was sitting in before. I was horrified. I wondered if the host was upset about that. :eek:o_O

It's probably mostly overthinking on my part. But knowing that doesn't take away my anxieties about trading. So I still try to not trade.

Haha, it happens to all of us. I think it's always going to be a little awkward no matter the situation because the communication provided through the game isn't the best as others stated. I think, too, other sites I've seen some abuse review systems so it's just kinda instilled that extra layer of precaution to prevent any misunderstandings. Though I think most on this site are quite the opposite and pretty relaxed.

I was also going to say, I've ended a session before as someone went to run to leave...and in those instances it's not really usually due to worrying they're running off but just sometimes I want to just close the gate after that person/trade (I'm too lazy to run back in the airport) and I figure it saves us both effort lol. It's really annoying that while the person is visiting you can use - to close gate but once they left - will only give you the option to save and quit.
So that may be the intentions of someone else as well.

you’re not alone in feeling this way. i’ve done over 1,000 trades on here and i still feel so anxious/awkward whenever i do trades, especially when it’s taking place on my island. i always end the session after the trade is over and “goodbye” has been said but i’ve definitely had a few people thinking they’ve done something wrong since i ended the session - i’ve never had a bad experience on here but i always just end the session once the trade is over as that’s easier and quicker for me.

but since i’m always anxious and always fretting about whether or not i said or did something wrong, it’s easy for me to overthink about something as simple as ‘ending the session’ opposed to allowing my guest to leave via airport. to be honest, i’m not sure why it’s such a big deal this time around, since i never remember this being an issue with new leaf but in the end, we’re all just people who love animal crossing and want to trade for stuff that we like or need and things that might seem like a big deal, really aren’t c’:

long story short, i understand how you feel, even after all of the trades that i’ve done, but if something had gone wrong during the trade or something had happened that upset the other trader, you should trust that they would’ve talked to you about it. as long as the trade is 100% over and you both exchanged farewell pleasantries, it’s safe to assume that the trade was successful and that both parties are happy :>

I've had this happen a couple times, i'm a bit directionally challenged. so have been led deep into their island before, we finish our agreement, then they don't start leading me back. so have tried to go back before then when thought was going the wrong way doubled back then was kicked. I just hoped they didn't think i was up to mischief with my lost bumblimg around

was used to it in NL but now idk why but it feels dif

Maybe it has to do with you being cautious about it. After all, New Leaf came out several years ago. Your mindset possibly might have changed by then.

Honestly, I prefer traders like you. Because it gives me a sense of "care" and "respect" when doing trades.

I can totally understand that lol. I’ve set up a routine of “message I’m on my way, say hi, stay as close to the entry as possible (mostly trades), say thanks and leave”. It always works but I still get nervous if my joystick twitches and my character moves weird or they don’t respond quick. So for no bad experiences but I still fee awkward no matter what’s ^^,

Oh your not the only one who feels awkward after trades, especially when your both just standing there waiting for someone to leave. But I’ve learned to embrace the awkwardness 😂
