I just started playing ACNH officially yesterday and could really use some advice from more experienced players! I used to play an older version of Animal Crossing on my friend's Wii years ago so I'm definitely not up to date with everything. Currently, I've crafted my vaulting pole and am still trying to bring items to Blathers to open up the museum.

I wanna know as much as I can about the game so I don't miss anything good I might find! Like,, what items should I be holding onto? What's considered rare and what's good for trading? What else I should keep an eye out for? Maybe even share some of your experience. Anything helps! 💜

hmm I think getting gold can be quite hard so if you find any hold onto it to craft some gold diys later
you have a catalog that records every item you have or had in your possession and you can just reorder a lot of them whenever you want but there are also some unorderables that you mostly get from special visitors so hold onto those
if you catch any bugs, fish and sea creatures donate them to the museum the first time, same with fossils

As tacky as it might seem now, put all the house/tent plots as you can down on the beach when you’re starting. It’ll save a LOT of headache when you’re planning your layout. unfortunately, I don’t think the three plots you get a bit into the first week fit on the beach (darn nook and giving his tenants false hope for a specifically furnished front yard), so plan on moving those as soon as possible.

Once you unlock terraforming, do not flatten your island and fill your rivers unless you’re 100% sure you can commit to rebuilding your island from the ground up again. I know people who’ve done this who ended up driving themselves insane, one of them even cried because she was so stuck on what to do and couldn’t put everything back the way it was. Some people much prefer to build from a clean slate, but others (like me) find more comfort in just building upon what’s there already.

There are resources online you can use to build a mock of your island to use as a reference, this way if you do wanna start clean you can at least figure out how you want your entire island to look (items and all) before you begin changing anything.

Here’s a good site: x (probably better used on pc versus mobile, though still works on either one)

My opinion is probably a bit controversial. My advice would be to ignore what everyone else says, disconnect from the community for a month or two, and discover things about the game for yourself. Then you can come back and deep dive into the community!

I agree with this! It's such a beautiful game that is complex in its simplicity. It's a lot of fun to just jump in and see what happens. Then as specific questions come up for you, you can come back online and ask c:

Here is some simple bell making advice.

Every day you can get 16,000 bells from a money rock, 20,000 bells from a money tree, and 3,000 bells from updating your dream.

IIRC, 15,000 bells per day for selling 5 wasps and 5 hives.

Save your bugs and fish in storage and sell them to CJ and Flick. They will pay 50% more than Nook's store will pay.

chill, take it slow, and forget about what people say you should be doing on your island. The game is 100000% more fun if you do it your own way.
Also, don't start looking into all the ACNH stuff posted on social media sites because they're always these super pretty cottagecore or fairycore islands that will make you discontent with your own island.
DON'T take villagers from mystery islands that you don't really like. You'll regret it later.
And be careful with building placement. If you find out that you have to move a building it'll run you 50k.

Don't use the sniff sniff reaction on strangers.

The only other advice I can cover in here is don't start building bridges willy-nilly. Tom Nook will force you to build one but just rely on your vaulting pole until you know what you want your island to look like. Tearing down things is annoying, TT or not.

One of the best things you can do like someone else said is play for yourself. Animal Crossing is supposed to be relaxing and nothing can really be missed as long as you do daily activities everyday :)

I agree with the notion that you should dive in head-first into your own experience of the game and just get a feel for it for yourself. 'Cause that's the point, right? Immersion! (No diving pun intended.) Don't worry about messing up too much, because it's meant to be personal and customizable, no matter how far off you might go. Intuition and flexibility are key!

If anything, though, you can always look up tips and tutorials online, of course. There's an overwhelming amount of information out there, and a plethora of websites, references, resources, tools, and YouTube videos designed specifically for New Horizons and its features! Pretty amazing, really. If you need information or guides on anything in particular, it's literally a Google or YouTube search away, or you can ask around! I've got plenty of bookmarks on hand myself. ^^

Tips regarding catching of bugs/fish and museum. If your goal is to complete the museum, donate all first catches. When you catch a new bug/fish for the first time your character will say "Yes!". Donating all first catches will definitely help you stay organized in knowing whether or not it needs to be donated, and save you the trouble of having to purposely look for the same fish/bug again later.

Yes this means for a few days your island will be cluttered with bugs and fish while the museum is being built, but it's worth it.

I'd build the bridge as close as possible to a river outlet, since those can't be terraformed.

Just follow Nook's instructions, if he doesn't have any you need to pay off your tent or wait for more villagers to move in. That's basically the tutorial, it's very extensive but it's the only time when you have goals set up by the game. Also there are night NPC that show up at 8 pm, so you should check your island once every night to see if either of them is there. Both of them give new items.

  • I feel like having a small disconnection towards other islands you see online is good. As it’s very easy to second guess yourself and your island. Something I’m always doing but working on stopping it.
  • Best way to make money is to buy turnips and sell them.
  • before unlocking terraforming take a screen shot of your map I love watching the progress of the island.
  • new horizons unlike other animal crossing games I feel relies a lot on trading and interacting with other players. To get different variations of some items you have to trade to get. So having a good community to trade with people is also a good idea (luckily the community here is really good. Never had any problems when trading here).
  • my final bit of advice is take it slow appreciate the little things like catching bugs/fish you’ve never caught before and villager interactions. I feel like focusing on the little things really helps you keep grounded and not getting bogged down in creating the “perfect” island.

There are so many things to do with Animal Crossing!

Just find an activity you want to do in the game. You don't have to do them all at once!

Always visit the community here and ask for help! :)

I have the same opinion. As you have some previous experience with AC game, you don't need to be trained like a beginner.
If you will get many advises, you will be spoiled and you really may ruin your experience.
Do not follow any of them - just try to do this in your way.
