Giveaways? [Opinion]

I think your feelings are valids, there are some conditions to giveaways that may seem odd, but if its a giveaway then usually a random generator is used. This stops people who just want to spam giveaways and makes it more focused on people who want it. I see a lot of people who are interested in certain villagers in giveaways for the resell so putting the extra effort in can deter spammers

I had this problem recently. I didn't want to make people write an essay to get Zucker, so I went with the first person who asked. I suppose that I have my own personal conditions for giveaways - which is usually that I give things to the first person who is polite. This forum user was polite, prompt, and seemed really excited to take Zucker (said that he was their dreamie) so I gave him away. What people do with a gift is up to them, but the same day, Zucker was up for sale on the same board. It left a bad taste in my mouth.

I want to give Marina away soon. I am likely to not do first-come-first-served - I will be reading feedback histories and checking recent posts if it isn't someone that I have dealt with before. I get fairly attached to my villagers (just not enough to keep them all forever and not meet new ones), so I want to give them away to people who will enjoy them. I don't want to charge market rate to discourage scammers, and have nice people unable to afford their dreamies because they don't have billions of bells and a thousand TBT hanging around.

At the same time, if I am giving something away, I want to feel positive about the transaction - if giveaways all became first-come-first-served, I might genuinely not like the way someone spoke to me, or they might use some kind of casual racism slur in the conversation, and I might feel uneasy continuing to deal with them. I would prefer to trade with people whose values match my own, and I am probably not the only person who feels this way. To me, 'giveaway' just means free, not 'Free, must go ASAP, no conditions apply'.

there seems to be something hypocritical and kinda self-entitled imo about complaining about giveaway posts asking to do something minor for entry to a random selection pool and in the same breath say it should always just go to the first person(s) to respond fast enough

like idk what giveaways you've been a part of, but I've almost never seen ones operate like that, in and out of the forums. unless the rewards are a) in high enough quantity to give people a reasonable frame of window to obtain without rushing or b) so generally undesired that most people would ignore, thus making it so that the few who would want can just get right away

from my understanding and experience, most giveaways are done by a random number generator. The point of having some condition like "tell me why you want this villager" or "tell my why you like this villager" is to show that you genuinely want them and have put some thought into it, rather than entering random giveaways hoping for the best, or even worse, selling them off for a profit. If I were giving away something popular, I would want it to go to someone who really wants it rather than someone entering for the sake of it. I don't mind first come first serve giveaways, they're okay, but it's a matter of being there in the right place at the right time rather than giving more people a chance. However I can see why first come first serve giveaways are a thing if people want to get rid of something fast.

[Edit: I did not expect so many responses. I appreciate all the contributions to this post and I will take them to heart.]

I especially can’t stand an ambiguous villager giveaway where the OP says, “Tell me why you want this villager.” and the replies are either borderline ad misericordiam fallacies or just general emotional appeals. Then again, how else does one respond to that? This is all a video game. We have no real reason to want certain villagers other than liking them or thinking that they’re cute/aesthetically pleasing. There’s no serious way to say, “I am somehow more credible and more deserving of this villager than everyone else.” It can be nice to hear people’s stories and experiences, but isn’t that what the ACNH general discussion forum is for? These things should not be a factor in giveaways, sales, or trades.

I absolutely agree with this. There's no way of knowing who's giving you honest reasons as to why they want that villager, and who's just inventing "sob stories." In that case, it's less of a giveaway and more of a writing contest with the terms of "who can stir my emotions the most."
