Happy Home Designer - Frequently Asked Questions (Got a question? Look here!)

I'm probably being EXTREMELY nitpicky, but:

So there's a limited-edition, Happy-Home-Designer-themed 3DS, right? Can I get it?
Yes, there is a limited-edition HHD 3DS. It's been announced for release in Japan, the UK/Europe, and Australia. We don't yet know if it will be released anywhere else in the world (we're giving you the side-eye, Nintendo of America).

Would it be possible to emphasize the fact that this limited-edition bundle is a New Nintendo 3DS XL? It could get confusing since Europe and Japan indeed get a regular New Nintendo 3DS bundle with the faceplates, along with the XL bundle. Again, this is probably really nitpicky, but I feel like it should be a bit more clear. Thanks! :)

Clarity is gud!! I'll expand the answer to include the specifics when I get home from work and am not staring at a tiny phone screen. Great suggestion and better that the answer not be so NA-centric.

I've noticed from the unboxing videos on youtube that all of the games with the NFC combo contain a special NPC card, while the normal games always have a normal villager card...

Hiya Dozer:
you sure can! Fish, bugs, and art are unlockable by spending play coins (the coins you earn just by walking around with your DS). After you've designed a few houses, you'll have the option to take "correspondence" courses from your desk in Tom Nook Housing. Each course costs anywhere from 1-6 play coins, though your first one is free. In addition to fish n' bugs and stuff, you can also unlock ceiling decorations, refurbishing, the ability to design multi-room houses, and more!

That's great, thanks for the speedy reply. :)

Awrighty! Updated as follows:
- updated the answer to the question about limited-edition 3DSes, per BellGreen's request
- updated the question re: furniture catalogue to draw attention to the fact that it also talks about bugs n' fish, etc.

As ever, holler if something doesn't look right/is dead wrong/if there's an unanswered question you'd like to see in there!

Is the game cartridge itself region locked? I'm thinking of buying one for my friend who lives in Malaysia (I live in the UK) and wonder if this will be a problem? Thanks.

Can you also put that you can play HHD on the 2DS? I know that lots of people know that 3DS game are compatible with the 2DS, but with the transition to the new generation of DS people may get confused.

Or a little unsure, like I was, hehe

Question, so as far as I understand, you can have basically unlimited amount of villagers in your town at a time, yes? What happens if say, Goose moves in and I decorate a house for him. Then I realize that he's ugly and I don't want to see his face ever again. Can you kick him out?

As well, can you always see your villagers? What happens if you accept thirty villagers into your town? Can you see them all or will some get "cycled out?" (Similar to the 16 villager void cycle in New Leaf).

As far as we've been able to tell, there is no villager cycle and there's no limit to the number of villagers for whom you can design houses. Someone posted a link a while ago to a series of imgur pix that show the full series of unlocked normal villagers, which one player appears to have unlocked without using amiibo cards to summon anyone. I'll update this response when I dig up the link.

UPDATE: Here's the link to all villagers unlocked by a single person. You can tell they've been unlocked from the main street (rather from amiibo cards) because when you use an amiibo card to unlock a villager, the villager's picture and the background/colour behind them change to look like their amiibo card.

The only "cycling" is the appearance of new villagers (i.e., clients) in your main street. Four villagers you haven't designed for yet will be hanging around on your main street at any one time, along with a bunch of villagers you've already helped. The ones you've helped will be carrying shopping bags or ice cream.

There's no need to kick anyone out, and I don't think that's even an option. If you hate Goose's face, you can avoid him simply by not-going to his house. He might show up on your main street or in your public buildings occasionally, but he won't be taking up any space (i.e., just because you have him doesn't mean that another villager is unable to appear--there's room for everyone!).

ETA: Conversely, if there's a villager you love and can't get enough of, you can go and visit them at home at any time, just by opening up your client list and selecting that villager. You can even re-design their home as many times as you like. So, say Goose unlocks something super-cool and you think it'd look amazing in Merengue's house (fat chance, but for the sake of examples...). If you've already designed Merengue's house, you can pop over to her place, tell her you want to redesign her home and add the new furniture...or just give her entire place a makeover. That can be as simple as changing one thing or as complex as adding a second (or third!) room and redesigning everything.

There's actually benefit to designing homes for all villagers, as they each unlock specific furniture (and sometimes clothing, music, plants and gyroids) that you can use in designing any house or public building once unlocked.

Still no news on that dang LE New 3DS XL, huh?

Sadly, nope! If there was news re: an LE bundle for NA, a number of your fellow forum-mates would be screaming and blowing party horns. I have my party horn at the ready, just in case. If a bundle isn't announced, I will set fire to my party horn.

If a bundle isn't announced I'm going to cry because I don't want an ugly New 3DS and my regular 3DS is all scratched up ;-;

If I love a certain set but hate the colour. can I change it? (like the gems in ACNL).

Also, the two-room layouts for villagers using play coins, I assume that unlocks it for all villagers? or do I have to choose a villager and unlock play coins multiple times?

You can totally change set colours! One of the "correspondence" courses you can unlock from your desk in the office (using play coins) will allow you to re-make furniture, including the shiny gem-style ones you see in AC:NL. Anything Cyrus can do for you in AC:NL you can re-make on the spot in HHD once you've unlocked the skill. And it isn't just re-making furniture--you'll also be able to re-make many of the food styles as well and apply QR codes to designs just like in AC:NL.

For the multiple rooms (you can eventually give a villager a 3-room house), that's also a skill unlocked with play coins, and you only have to pay once. You don't have to pay per villager. You can also go back to the houses of villagers you've already designed and give them a bigger house.

Awesome! was hoping for this! Thank you for your quick reply!

Once all the skills are unlocked (for the rooms), can you choose the size of the house when you start decorating? or would you be stuck with 3-rooms forever? I love to have extra rooms but some villagers might be better suited with just one or two =p

You can choose the size of the house when you're first consulting with the villager in the office, before the deco-fun starts. You'll be able to choose from a variety of room sizes and configurations. If you later decide that you want to change the number of rooms, you can go back and re-design the house.

If I can find a good post out there in internetland that shows the various configs, I'll update this post here.

UPDATE: The incomparable TBT forum user Jinglefruit has a couple of tumblr posts about room layouts. (Their tumblr is absolutely worth checking out for lots of HHD antics, play, and delightfulness.)
