So I have finally made the decision to reset for a better map layout, and I realised I have absolutely no idea what to look for in my new map. I think the least amount of ponds, the better, but I have no idea about river placements or North/South divides or anything. So, what do you guys look for when choosing a map, and what should I avoid to be able to maximise the space available? Thanks so much!

It's really up to your own opinions of as far as the river goes. One person could like it curvy and the next would what as straight as possible. But you're right about the ponds-most people don't want too many because they take up PWP space.

Also, if you really want to beetle hunt then Re-tail being close to the docks is something you would want. :3

One pond to me makes everything bigger.
Also, it seems like my cycling town is bigger because I have one pond and it's close to Re-Tail.
But it's mostly preference like Feraligatr said.

To maximise your space: less ponds, straighter river, as little dead space behind/next to Re-Tail & Town Hall. if you like to make money on the island, Re-Tail by your dock, definitely. Other than that really it's personal preference; you could try looking at a bunch of dream towns to see what you like and don't like.

It's up to you really - I restarted my game recently because I hated my layout so I spent hours resetting, trying to get the perfect map for me (I was looking for the shortest river I could get) and now I'm really happy with my layout. x3

I would say that you want to make sure that the town hall is way at the top of the map, like right against the train tracks, that way villagers will be less likely to move right in fron of or right next to the town hall.

I'd recommend a map which has the main buildings packed together. Plaza, Re-tail, Mayor building and a place for your house. Ideally near the station. I had a map in which the plaza was located in a deserted area, I never walked past it which was very unpleasant.

Also look for a map which has good access to the beach. Some maps have a large piece cut-off by water meaning you need your wetsuit every time to get coconuts or shells there. Some maps offer 2 separate pieces of beach, each with it's own slope. Those are the best in my opinion.
