Honestly kinda boggles my mind to hear of how expensive all this stuff will be... I was already sure that I wasn't buying a switch 2 right off the bat because I just recently bought a new switch and I'm not all that crazy about the games coming out just yet but hearing that games will be $80-90 a piece is yikes😓 That definitely pushes back any chance I buy the S2 at least a year if not indefinitely. It's also a huge push for me to finally move towards PC gaming😒

During the direct, we were guessing the prices and I was the only one to guess $450 USD, which... ended up being correct regretfully ywy)9;;...

Personally -- while I could afford it, I think the price point makes it something that I'm not going to bother with until there's a game I really want to play on launch. 630 CAD before tax for just the console alone is... uh... a lot, especially considering what the price point of the games might be. Being able to share games is nice, and I'll probably make use of it so my friends don't have to buy party games themselves... but it's contingent on people having the console in the first place.
i love you kirby air riders but i think i can wait before playing... same goes for mario kart/party/etc. -- there's only a few IPs that would make me buy the console, one being animal crossing. fortunately, no news on that front.

Considering the target audience for Nintendo systems is usually casual gamers/families/etc., I feel like this is going to limit their sales a lot. Then again, I'd imagine a lot of families who already have a Switch won't really bother with the Switch 2 -- so maybe the target audience is different entirely?

also lowkey highkey hoping this manifests again:

I think that it would depend if the game is good or not in the first place. I don’t mind paying full price for a game if it is truly an excellent game. I bought BotW four times before I decided to get it digitally. If it is something that turns out to be an extremely lousy game that is overpriced such as Lego Brawl then I feel unhappy and will return the game if it’s a physical release. Either way, I’m going to do my best to save a bit of mom each week in order to save enough to get a Switch 2. I don’t plan on buying one until at least November (before Black Friday obviously) and see if any retailer is selling the console at a lower price and/or in a bundle.

This actually made me think of something. Could it be possible that Nintendo's target with the switch 2 is for die hard fans and individuals without kids? Nintendo never said anything about the switch1 being shut down or going unsupported, and tomodachi is one game that is for the switch1 that isn't launching until 2026 for example.. Perhaps this is Nintendo's way of still having the Switch1 "revelant" if they are still going to release games for the switch1, but people can still play it on the switch 2 if desired. Casual gamers and family orientated customers would will stick with the Switch1 for a while. Maybe the time the switch 3 or whatever roles around, the switch 2 would be more affordable to casual and family gamers and have a larger library for them. Perhaps the switch 1 will stay around until about the middle or 2/3rds of the way of the switch 2's life span.

I need an option that combines 2 and 3. Yes, it is too expensive and there's a chance I won't be able to get this at all, but no I am not jumping to calling Nintendo crazy just yet because I am witnessing everything go up, especially in my own country.
Before the Nintendo Direct happened, I already had a feeling the economy was going to ruin everything and I was unfortunately very correct.

I actually saw prices for where I live match prices for Switch 1 games mostly. For example I saw MKW go for 70€ and the new 3D DK go for 60€ which brings me hope.
I do think the console itself is quite expensive but it's a one time thing so I don't mind that much. I really hope games don't go over 70€, I'll be fine if they're all at this price but 90€ was just crazy.

ruh roh is right.

we were all thinking that $450 was already with tariffs. i'm bracing for >$500 console and $100 games. 🫠

$450 wouldn't be from tariffs. I assume the console price is because of the chips used.
Steam deck prices were $399-649 depending on which of the three models you chose because of power, chips, screens whatever.

Tariffs from the USA on Japan products coming into the USA is 24% if that is dealing with all things or electronics and not cars or something specific as far as I am aware.
So, maybe $119.99 will added to the 449.99? $569.98 the new price without sales tax? Or maybe a round up to $579.99 from Nintendo?

Editing to add this snippet about digital products as it is information dealing with the thread.

Also, I want to add if anyone is contemplating replacing their switch/SwitchLite/joycons, you should probably do it before April 9th?? If switch 2 is going up because of tariffs, switch 1 and it's physical accessories would too. (Not a financial advisor thing, just a personal thought I would consider if I wanted a switch or switch accessories)

I'm indifferent in regards to the price of the console, the main reason being I'm in the UK and the console on its own is around £395 so it's not that much of a monetary hit as opposed to prices elsewhere which are way more ridiculously priced. The UK price is kind of what I was expecting anyway. Will I be buying it on launch? Unfortunately not. The only factors enticing me are the new Mario Kart game and the Gamecube virtual console, everything else I'm also indifferent to. So I honestly don't mind holding off for a while. And I already have a financial priority anyway with paying off my phone lmao.
As for the price of games... hoo boy. Yeah... not a fan of that.

i'm going to want the switch 2 still but i do think that the prices of the games have gotten out of hand. bumping game prices up to 80-90 dollars is just disheartening. 60 was already A LOT. i'm definitely only going to be buying games i truly NEED... which is not something you should probably have to consider but like, the prices are ridiculous, i can't justify too many purchases at once. 😭

I had just decided to preorder the Switch 2 since I know I want one eventually and I wanted to beat the tariff costs. And now this. Video games were very briefly the only element of my life not being actively destroyed (my other passions are elementary education, conservation, library work, and national parks, yay) and now somehow our president has managed to jeopardize Mario Kart World. I’m so tired.

I was expecting ~$400 USD for the console and $70 for the games so I'm a little disappointed but I definitely still want it. If it goes up even more as a result of the tariffs I might not be able to afford to get it right at launch like I was hoping, though

I'm not really upset about how the console is priced but the cost of the games is a bit harder to swallow for me and I don't think Nintendo did itself any favors by leaving the pricing details out of the Direct. first party games have been $60 here since the Wii U days so when Tears of the Kingdom came out for $70 I figured that'd be the new normal and I thought it seemed pretty in line with how prices have previously jumped between consoles, but it made seeing the new Mario Kart at $80 a bummer. since DK Bananza is listed at $70 I'm assuming (or hoping) that most games will stick at that price but it sucks knowing $80 is on the table cause that feels like a much bigger jump from the $60 I'd gotten so used to paying

I get a ton of value out of most Nintendo games. I'm sure I'll be able to sink 100+ hours into MK easily and that makes it worth it to me, especially when I compare it to the cost of all the other things that have gone up in price lately. with that said though I think some of the decisions Nintendo has made are crazy and when you add it all together I think it's understandable people are bothered. it's wild to me that the Welcome Tour game isn't just included with the console. I also don't like the idea of having to pay extra money for the Switch 2 editions of games that are essentially just updated graphics/performance. the games with a lot of extra content I can understand but if you own Breath of the Wild for the Switch and then buy a Switch 2 I don't get why you should then have to pay extra to get to utilize the upgraded hardware of the Switch 2

I voted indifferent, although I am not really. I do admit that I will probably end up buying the system and games eventually. I am sure this is exactly what Nintendo wants to hear... an extra ten dollars for a game with hours upon hours of entertainment is the difference between me skipping a meal or two.

I am worried about the indie games that are generally more affordable. If people are paying more for the big name games, they may ignore the small games that take just as much work to develop with a small team. The cost increase will affect many, and who knows what is coming with the Trump tariffs.

I may change my vote in the coming days...

I don't mind the console price, kinda expected it around 450 euros, now its 470 which is expensive but worth it for a one time buy. However the games are so insanely expensive, and you keep buying games, so it will keep costing me money, especially with NSO on top of it. Not to mention the switch 1 game upgrades...

So I agree with a lot of people that I'm only going to buy when there is a game release i really really like. Plus I'm gonna sit out all the hard- and software issues too lol, I'm curious how the joy cons are gonna preform...

It definitely was a disappointment, and for a lot of countries with how high it got. With how the economy is right now, it be better to see if its actually worth buying right now or wait, maybe even wait to see what other games will be available, since I know I wouldn't buy a whole console for one game.

I'm probably gonna do what I did with my switch. I mean, I only got a switch in 2021 cause I finally had money to spend, and after that I bought games of people selling, allowing me to get games between £18-30

What are the prices of the games in UK? No matter where I look I can't find it.

I really think they won’t try this just for the sheer fact of how it worked out for them in the 3DS - Switch and Wii - Wii U transition times. They attempted to keep the older console supported for a year or two but the games always greatly underperformed, even when they were good. (WarioWare Gold, Mario & Luigi Remakes, Just Dance etc.)

also lowkey highkey hoping this manifests again:
I can really see this being a possibility! The 3DS started off as a flop but then really picked up in 2014 - 2016.

I really dislike it. I'll still buy a Switch 2, but I'm sure I'll be buying fewer games. I'll be much less likely to take a chance on something at $80-90 than I would be at $50-60. And it's hard to imagine paying $80-90 for a game with less content, like a Wario Ware or a Rhythm Heaven. (I'm glad the next Rhythm Heaven will be on Switch 1.)

On the other hand, I have no problem paying that much for an Animal Crossing, a Zelda game, or some other big epic adventure. I know I'll be getting hundreds of hours of gameplay out of those, so they're worth it. But this will hurt the next tier of games that are good, but not quite great.

Nintendo UK store is listing Mario Kart World at £66.99 for digital and £74.99 for physical. Donkey Kong Bananza is a bit cheaper, being £58.99 for digital and £66.99 for physical.
