So it sounds like PHYSICAL Switch 2 Edition games come with the upgrade pack key instead of it all being on the cartridge.
I don't have an X account so I couldnt get a direct screen shot of the post nor check out the comment section. Sorry it's a tad blurry. Should be able to zoom in though.

I voted indifferent but I can't say it's not disappointing. I seen the $80 barrier calling to be broken but I expected Nintendo not to be one of the first to do it. I'm not buying a Switch 2 year one in the case of any hardware defects and also so that I can see how the library matures. Switch 1 took months to get the first game I didn't dislike (Splatoon 2) and Mario Kart World as an MK fan doesn't look like the upgrade they probably want it to be, at least to me.

It looks like a piece of hardware well worth the price assuming the pre-order delay here in the US isn't just a hint it's going up. The Switch's screen is very not good imo and I have never found it in me to justify a second switch just for the OLED screen so even if the games don't catch my eye in the next 1-2 year mark I'll probably buy one around the middle of it's lifespan.

Totally agree with this. Switch 2 looks like a massive hardware upgrade vs Switch 1. Paying an extra $100-200 one time upfront for a much more powerful console seems pretty fair to me. Although a $300 price tag like Switch 1 had was nice.

It's completely the price of games that seems crazy to me

Fake news.

Physical Mario Kart World is $80 USD, not $90. It’s right there on Nintendo’s website. Please don’t spread misinformation.

I went to the Nintendo website to check and couldn't find that. Honest question - where did you see physical specifically listed for $80?

I asked earlier in the thread where people was seeing physical games listed as $90 on Nintendo's website and no one has responded. So I am assuming people are assuming Stores will charge the $10 because they have it in store taking up space. I know some small stores do things like that sometimes..
I'd imagine Nintendo has a contract on what stores have to sell physical games for. So I am not sure something like that, store discretion, is allowed, as it could lead to scaping... Unless a Nintendo contract allows that until a certain cap... Also if the $10 shows up, it could be what Nintendo has in their contract. Who knows until it actually happens.
And I didn't see physical prices listed on the Nintendo store, just digital.

MSRP is manufacturer suggested retail price. Retail as in brick and mortar stores. Physical version.

You can also double-check with US retailers that have their Mario Kart World page up, like Walmart. $79

The game prices are concerning because they could set a standard in the whole industry. I think 80 or 90 € for one single game is insane and way too much. Will still buy certain games I REALLY want but will be more selective in general.

It sucks that they're going up so high. I know back in the day Super Nintendo and N64 games were really high, but at least those games were finished. Now they push games out as fast as they can with tons of incomplete stuff with promises for patches to come later. How about you give us a finished game day 1 if you're wanting $90?

Also I'm not sure if this is a Nintendo thing or just inflation and the whole tariff fiasco. Which if it is and this is why Nintendo is doing this, you know who is to blame, but we're going to scapegoat 'company' instead.

They were never listed as $90 here. In Europe, the physical version of Mario Kart is 89.99 €, and some people immediately took that to mean physical games will cost $90 and set the wildfire of misinformation free.

I was initially put off by the 89.99 € price tag for Mario Kart World.

But then I remembered that in Europe, it’s standard to include sales tax in the advertised price. I could be wrong, but that’s how it was explained to me — and it matches my experience shopping in France last year. One thing I loved: the price you see is the price you pay.

So if that 89.99 € includes tax, it’s actually competitive with U.S. prices, where tax is always added at checkout. For example, the French listing here (https://www.fnac.com/a21424408/Mario-Kart-World-Nintendo-Switch-2-Jeu-video-Nintendo-Switch-2) shows Mario Kart World at 80 €, tax included — and with a 20% VAT in France, which confirms that European prices are competitive once tax is factored in.

In This interview at the 2:56 mark, Doug Bowser from Nintendo said the prices were made without factoring in tariffs for the usa. And he was talking about the console at the time. Afterwards, the interview went into how Nintendo determines the prices of their video games for the new system coming out.

But now that we are in the future, we know preorders are canceled for the time being to assess tariff impact. So the price of the console will probably rise because of tariffs if nations don't settle the tariff war. Digital games aren't effected by tariffs because of a law in the USA. The only games that can be effected by tariffs are physical games.

So, I don't think one person can say it's the company or the USA president when it comes to prices they aren't happy with. At the end of the day, it's pretty much both of them. And even then, the console is priced because of its quality. It does fall in the range of the Steam Decks (which consist of 3 models of different qualities).

That actually makes a lot of sense. I had wondered why there was such a price difference after all.

That does not say physical?

Good point walmart does it have it displaying for 79 atm, but no pre-order is live. Let's see when the games are actually for sale. 79 is still very expensive, but let's hope it's 79 and not higher

Actually, the MSRP only refers to physical since that’s what is sold at retail. You could even argument that with this announcement, Nintendo hasn’t provided the digital eShop price. But we all know from experience that the price Nintendo charges you on the eShop is the same they charge you at retail.

I updated the thread and poll title to reflect the information we have now. But let's be nice about this -- there was a lot of information flying all over the place when the Direct dropped, and Nintendo didn't help matters by not including pricing in the Direct. (or game pricing in the press release!) Very easy for anyone to get confused in the chaos!

Agreed that MSRP typically should be the physical retail price. With that said, there's been a lot of conflicting information that digital and physical may not cost the same for Switch 2 games. And Nintendo has already sort of been testing this out with the "buy 2 digital games for $50 each instead of $60". Nintendo could easily clear the air on this one, but they have chosen not to address it, leaving a lot of people wondering/concerned that physical games will be priced higher than digital

Don't mind paying £75, but how much more am I going to be spending on DLC over the next 4 years, + membership online

i just don't see the quality increase in the games as much, i was fine paying 70$ for TOTK ; because that game me hundreds of hours of playtime but with this game i imagine myself playing it for like 20 hours and then going back to mk8d time trials.
