How do you feel about Tips?

I always tip, but I sort of hate that I have to. Restaurants are generally super expensive already. Sometimes the person receiving also is unsatisfied with what they receive. So they are unsatisfied if we don’t tip, but still unsatisfied if we do tip. If my total is $20, please don’t expect a $10 tip.

Though servers shouldn’t have to rely on tips, it is something they signed up for. When they took the job I’m sure it was explained to them and they decided to take the offer. My job pay right now is based a lot on commission and bonuses. Sometimes we have busier seasons and months, and sometimes we have really low months. I signed up for this. If you are not satisfied with the way you are paid, there are other jobs to choose from that pay fixed rates.

I think tipping should be around, but not forced upon customers, if you think the service is good you can tip, but the hourly wage the workers get should be sufficient or more for them to live their lives. There shouldn't be a certain percentage you must tip and workers shouldn't expect a tip. If they want to tip they will.

i always tip for food service and rideshare apps. i have firsthand experience working as a driver and it made a big difference when people tipped vs when people didn't tip. to put it into perspective, essentially 1/4 of what you make is automatically absorbed by whatever app you are working for. on top of this, they don't give you any sort of stipend for car insurance/health insurance/taxes/gas/wear and tear/etc. i think this is where tips are really beneficial for drivers.

i feel that the burden shouldn't fall solely on the individual users to comp what employers should realistically be covering for their employees. this is why drivers were pushing to be considered employees of the apps instead of independent contractors some time back. it would've changed the burden on to the companies (which btw make a LOT more money and could realistically provide support for their drivers).

with food service it's a bit different, i don't fully agree with the idea that you HAVE to tip every time. there have been times where i've not tipped or tipped less because the service did not justify it. i still think in most cases it's important to tip because similarly, when employees get tips it's to offset the lower hourly rates they get paid.

ideally, tipping should be included in the final price and part of that is the employer's responsibility but unfortunately we live in a society that puts profit over wellness.

My stance? It's...complicated.

While I get that it is common curtesy to tip, I don't like those who look down upon those who do not.

We live in a day and age where it is very easy to spend money, and very hard to save it. Yes, those people have to support themselves, but so do the customers. Payment should be the employers responsibility.

there are some servers that make more from tips than they would if they werent given them, but i think servers should be paid a livable base wage and tipping culture should end. we would pay the same amount for food overall (unless you never tipped), and the servers would have guaranteed income. if fancier restaurants/places want to still accept tips on top of paying their employees livable wages, thats fine with me. theres nothing wrong with wanting to give a little extra to your server for great service, but servers shouldnt have to rely on that. overall, i dont think it should be the standard, but i understand if people still want to accept tips for the extra income. i think a lot of times the tip amount is more reflective of the customer than the server anyway so its just not a reliable form of payment in my opinion. just charge more for the product/service and raise pay.

servers have different opinions, but i would have preferred higher base wages and not having to rely on tips. it was always frustrating and sad when you give great service in a sit-down restaurant but get no tip. maybe in a higher income area it isnt as much of a problem, but it seemed standard that people would come to eat and just not have the budget to tip (or just didnt feel like paying it i guess). also, if anyone was inappropriate or extremely rude, you would just have to take it and laugh because your tip could be at stake.. im glad i dont serve anymore haha

employers should pay a better wage. but we don't live in a perfect world, so i tip service workers.

i used to work in food service and would feel bad if i didn't make good tips, and my employer actually told me he was upset when i didn't bring in enough tips since we shared tips. i hated that kind of pressure.

Restaurants should pay their servers a living wage. It shouldn’t be up to random patrons to make or break someone’s income. I’m anti-tipping, but I always make sure to give at least 20% because god knows we’re all struggling.

Like others have said I think businesses should pay their employees adequately rather than rely on tips. After working at an awful restaurant I feel even more strongly about it.

At the end of each day tips were evenly divided between employees. My boss would then reduce our wage based on the tips so that we were still earning minimum wage. The tips were basically meaningless. We were still being paid $12 an hour for back breaking labor. It was deceptive to us employees and it was deceptive to the customers who thought we were earning more thanks to their tips.

We basically only do it at restaurants/hotels etc. here but yeah, I do tip some if the food was nice and the service was good. It should be free of choice to tip, I mean if someone doesn't do their job properly they shouldn't have extra.
