I saw this one comment days ago saying that people use emotes because they have a mental issue... That assumption really ticked me off so I decided to make a thread to debunk that comment.

I barely use emotes. The only time I use them is to try and show my expression to others, especially when it comes to writing on the internet (not formal writing of course). Because you know on the internet, misunderstandings happen and can lead to undesirable events like flame wars for example.

How often do you use your emotes?

I use them all the time lol. **** whoever said only people with a mental illness use them, they’re clearly just a bitter *******

Sheesh... whoever said that seriously needs to chill 0_o I use emotes all the time! It can be hard to convey tone over the internet, and emotes are a good way to help with that- plus they’re just plain cute ^u^

I see no correlation between using emotes and mental issues. How do people even come up with these claims?

I think I use emotes an average amount. Sometimes I like to use them to give my posts something extra, but they aren't always needed either. They're just a nice little 'something' to add to things I post!

They use their imaginations because that is how facts are made. That is a fact!

I really don't get this correlation either. I've always used them because it's just so hard to show emotion over texts or the internet. People can't see your air quotes, the smile on your face to know you are joking or the smirk you make with sarcasm. And sometimes - especially in texts - there are miscommunications because of how the text is read so I use them to "clear the air" so to speak.

I use them sometimes, whenever I feel like it. I think they are really necessary in online speech though, because sometimes you cannot understand how the other person is feeling or talking without them. They are a necessary bridge for that.

(눈‸눈)....

Emoticons exist because the earliest users of the "internet" found it difficult to communicate when some statements could be understood in multiple ways. They added ways to replace facial expressions in order to have more context to a message.

Now, why would that be related to mental issues? I rather feel using many emoticons means a person appears more approachable and that they genuinly try not to be missunderstood. (✿❛ ֊ ❛„)
There is no negative connotation in that for me, none.

Emotes are great ^w^
If I don't use emotes I'll just make faces, but they do show of different expressions during messaging because you can't really display it much through messages I guess lolol.
Also apparently people who use emotes more are considered more happier people, I don't know if it's true or not c:

Putting faces of posts is a random dumb thing, and that's why I rarely use faces.

I like to use any kind of emoticon because I don't want to be a stuck up ******* on the internet, I just want to have fun. ^_^

I think it's the other way around or they're just a boring person, too formal or feel mad all the time haha (I'm kidding). Does stickers qualify? I've been using them a lot when chatting with my gf on messenger. We spam each other lol and sometimes, even talk/joke about it when talking face to face irl.

Far too often. I use them too often to a fault I think lol. I feel like I'd come off as cold. unfeeling and boring if I didn't use them. I've been trying to limit them and not use them as excessively, and I feel like I'm succeeding in that compared to what I used to be.

I use them all the time but mostly ironically. The only one I use seriously is the happy face because I don't want my messages to sound mean.

I'll never use them as this much, and one thing how come belltree doesn't have the demon face one.
:);):p:eek::D:lemon::(:mad::rolleyes::cool::blush::confused:

I actually use them quite often when texting, because I feel like if I don't i'll end up sounding really blunt and rude. Most of the time I use the two eye emojis and the laughing one. I agree with everyone else, if I didn't use emojis when talking i'd probably find it harder to express myself, and it could lead to a lot of miscommunication. :lemon:

It depends on who I'm speaking to, and if they use emotes or not LMAO.
If I'm texting someone I've met in real life, and I don't know them too well, I won't use emotes unless they do first, because a lot of times I've had people ask me what they are... and whenever I try to explain to someone that "uwu" is a closed-eyes smiley they just get confused af
I use emotes all the time when I'm texting my boyfriend though! Our favorite is: "^-^"
