I don't enjoy playing, can you guide me?

I bought New Horizons on nintendo eshop for 60 euros and it seems that I cannot refund my money. I played mobile AC for a year straight, I remember how hyped everyone was for NH, I watched a couple of videos to make sure I want this game but.... as soon as I started playing this game turned out as a big disappointment for me. I got the ugliest villagers and all what I can do is punch and ignore them to make them leave the island. I bought so many tickets (at least twenty) to find a loveable villager and I didn't. I don't enjoy catching fish nor insects because I can't precisely control my character. I wish I could at least download modes that can make this game enjoyable for me.... but I don't know how. I hate crafting in this game because the instruments break all the time. The inventory space is too small, so i just fill my island with thrash. I just don't know what to do. Last time I turned on the game was 4 months ago, but nothing changed it seems. Sorry for such a longpost. I hope you can suggest some guides or tell me if there's any chance for a refund.

All I can offer is that it's possible that this game simply isn't for you, and that's okay. And not to be the bearer of bad news, but after 4 months of owning the game, I'm fairly certain a refund is not in your future.

Sorry to hear that you’re not enjoying this game at all.
For me I love this game so much because I love to decorating my island the way I want (of course if you are
Person who loves to decorating). You can create a small garden for yourself and also for your cute villagers. You can create lots of things to your island like small arcade area, library, post office, rock garden and much more .
Once you get into it you will definitely enjoy the game I’m sure. There is turnip stock market you can buy and sell them at good price and it’s a good source of making tons of money and you can buy a better tools at nooks or even buy from golden tools from other people who selling them here.
I hope you’re going to love this game as much as I do

As @tajikey already said, maybe this game is not for you.

But... maybe you expecting too much from the very beginning?

1. If you barely (recently) started your game, just start over and over, until you have acceptable villagers. Once you will have those, you will be able to start playing.
2. I don't understand reason for aggression (punching or ignoring) - don't like specific villagers, you don't have to have them.
3. If you can't catch insects / fish, give some time, try to learn, observe and you will gain experience and you will be better in no time.
3a. Is to possible your switch controller is working improperly / is broken?
4. Inventory may be too small, but it will be much bigger as you will progress the game.
5. If tools are breaking easily, you may consider to have a better tools.
6. Many people placing different things outside of tent / home, due to not enough space and this is just a temporary solution.

If you will require more help, I do believe many of us will be more than happy to help you.

If you hate your villagers that much and aren't attached to your island (which it sounds like you aren't) you can always reset until you get some cuter villagers or you can time travel to kick out unwanted villagers quicker. You can expand your inventory space at the nook stop if you haven't already. You don't have to catch bugs/fish. You can customize your tools so they won't break as often.

A huge focus of this game is decorating your island. I didn't see you mention anything about island decoration. If you don't enjoy a lot of stuff in the game, including island decoration, it probably isn't your type of game. And no, I don't believe you can be refunded at this point.

The start of the game is really slow and grindy, but as you stick with it, things get better.

I got the ugliest villagers and all what I can do is punch and ignore them to make them leave the island

We all can relate to having "ugly" villagers. Obtaining the best villagers is one of the quests many of us strive to achieve. If you're not having luck getting them through RNG, there are many of us here selling and giving away villagers. You might be able to find some you like.

I don't enjoy catching fish nor insects because I can't precisely control my character.

I'll admit it can be frustrating mechanic, but it's been this way forever, and it's one of the many challenges you have to train yourself to get better at. Aside from being a great way of making money, fishing becomes a challenge as you try to complete your critterpedia for the golden fishing pole or try to complete you museum. It gives you something to complete in the game over the course of a year or so.

I hate crafting in this game because the instruments break all the time. The inventory space is too small, so i just fill my island with thrash. I just don't know what to do. Aside from the axe, tools breaking is something new to the series, and it's sad video games always seem to think things should break. They want to be realistic, but even then things break about 10000x faster than they do in real life. My advice is to stop using the flimsy tools as soon as you can. Use the normal ones as they last longer. Plus, each time you customize them, they get repaired.

The inventory space is too small, so i just fill my island with thrash.

The inventory space will eventually grow to 40 once you upgraded it. If it makes you feel any better, the previous entries to the series had a max space of about 15, which is less than you start with in New Horizons. Plus, nothing would stack (Excluding fruit in New Leaf)

I will try that thank you! I certainly love decorating and in Pocket Camp there wasn't so much space to do that. Do you use time skipping though?

I'd definitely take other people's advice to restart your island until you start with villagers and an island that you like and will be happy with for at least a little while. I also agree that you might need to lower your expectations a bit. the game is a slow start even compared to other AC games, so you can't expect to have massive amounts of space and whatever else straight away. it takes time to get used to things like fishing too, but a bit of practice really helps.

I'd advise looking up nice islands that help you figure out where you might want to go with yours. looking at what villagers you like and thinking about things like where you can put their island also helps. giving yourself a goal helps the game feel more alive in my opinion! but honestly, just take it slow and don't compare yourself to others, and I think you'll have an easier time with it. you have a lot of freedom, but it takes a lot of patience in the beginning. you can also time travel if you want to jump ahead for the first few weeks which might help you get more out of the game too :)

2 I don't understand how to make them go away from my island. I feel disgust when i look at them because i really really hate their design. I can't invite new villagers it seems, not before they leave, but i will try to start over and over as you suggested
3 OK! My switch is almost brand new (I bought it in July with Mario Odyssey, finnished it in a few days, bought 3 little games which i also quickly finnished and after playing animal crossing i haven't touched my nintendo for 4 months, because I spent all of my money on NH. I finnished BOTW today and decided to play NH again)
4 OK!!
5 User Rajescrossing said that there are golden tools, but in my shop there are none, only simple tools
Thank you so much for your answer!! I really want to be the part of this community and since I can't refund my money I will try to be patient

Yeah I will restart my island right now! I have expanded my inventory space to maximum I think, but can I expand storage space in my house?
Can you explain how to customise tools?
I enjoy decoration a lot, I just don't have the money to buy the items I want, but it's not a problem!
Thank you for your answer!! ❤❤❤

As you haven't progress much with your game, I will give you same advice, start game over. I'm not sure if I understand properly "hate their design" - design is the same for all animals, but maybe will be easier if you tell if you have a favourite animal(s).

True, there are golden tools, but you will not get them until you progress with the game and it will not be quick and easy. However golden tools are breakable, but obviously not so quick as flimsy ones.

If you will restart your island, everything you expanded so far will go away. You will need to start over.
Storage space in your house will come with house expansion.

Golden tools are unlocked under special conditions and have to be crafted not bought (unfortunately
Break 100 axes
Catch every fish then talk to Blathers (museum owl)
Same as rod but with bugs
Get a perfect town rating (Isabelle will tell you what to do if you are having difficulties) then talk to Isabelle
Personally my least favorite to get, but save Gulliver a total of 30 times (give him the parts to fix his phone 30 times)
Shoot down 300 balloons and a golden one will appear at some point (shoot it down for the recipe)

*side notes* Helping Gulliver rewards exclusive items, Balloons carry special DIY recipes that you can only get from them, In a perfect town a new flower will appear that can only spawn in perfect towns, the golden watering can has the ability to spawn golden roses, and Isabelle is unlocked later in the game
After helping Tom Nook in the tutorial he will invite Isabelle, he makes a call in the morning announcement that tells you
The golden can waters a 3x3 grid of flowers and if you water black roses with it they have a chance to spawn golden roses around them when breeding instead of black.

Hope this helps ^-^ Also! Golden tools can still break but they last allot longer.

First, I recommend just starting from scratch.

Second here's a guide to how the beginning of the game works.

Third, once you get the ability to add more plots by talking to Nook, you'll be able to go out and look for more villagers. But heads up, if not found on the day the plot is up, a random villager may move in the next day. Villagers will not move until they talk to you about it, which takes time.

Now about the rest of the stuff talked about. Museum collecting, such as fish and bugs, these mechanics wont change, so if wanting to collect other things, you can always do fossils and art (once Redd comes to town). All tools will break, can't change that, even the gold ones will after a longer time. Crafting is a core mechanic and is needed to get certain furniture, tools and other items, even the holidays revolve around it. But you can always purchase tools and furniture.

As stated above, you can always focus on decorating, but this leads to more items needed. So you may have to craft or trade online to get certain items, since some shop items are color locked specifically to your own island.

I will try that thank you! I certainly love decorating and in Pocket Camp there wasn't so much space to do that. Do you use time skipping though?
That’s good , just a pick the theme that you will enjoy decorating your island. There is a lot of space to do that. No I’m not a time traveling person

As soon as Tom Nook lets you go through his customization workshop, you can customize tools by using customization kits. If you feel like you have used a tool for a while and it will break soon, just go to a DIY work bench to customize it and it will reset the durability. I believe they can't be of the flimsy variety though. You can get some better tools by purchasing the "Pretty good tool recipes" DIY pack at the nook stop with nook miles you earn from completing tasks. Axes can't be customized to reset their durability unfortunately but you can craft a golden axe which lasts a really long time by breaking 100 axes.

And no problem!

I knew that the beginning is slow, I just didn't think it's this slow. But maybe I was doing something wrong.
I never got the chance to play 3ds, and I know that PocketCamp is so much different, but catching bugs on the telephone was so much easier it is frustrating for me. But I really love collecting, so completing the museum is my main dream.
As I said in another post, I completed BOTW today and I hate that tools and in this case weapons break so fast in vidya nowadays. It feels like I just crafted a tool and the next minute it is gone.
Thank you for your answer 💋💋💋

Thank you!! I really love villagers. I played pocket camp when I was on lsd, and I felt so much love for them, so much connection. I know it's really silly, but no one even congrats me on holidays. Animal crossing is great when you feel lonely

Keep practicing catching bugs and fish in New Horizons, and sooner or later, you’ll view the mobile game’s way of doing it as way too simplified and easy. That’s how the majority of the main series players view it because we are so accustomed to it being a little more challenging. Especially the summer beetles.

That logic really goes for anything between the two games though. With Pocket Camp, you’re essentially getting a simplified, “lite” Animal Crossing experience. With the main series, you are treated to a game with way more complexity.

I recommend you keep at it, follow the guides the other players linked you to, and try not to view this game through the same lens as you do with Pocket Camp! It’s so worth it.

Villagers I like: Bob, Chief, Def, Drake, Fang, Fauna, Fuchsia, Gloria, Greta, Jeremiah, Kid Cat, Kiki, Kyle, Lucky, Marina, Melba, Mitzi, Moe, Molly, Muffy, Octavian, Peewe, Pietro, Puck, Purrl, Roscoe, Static, Tex, Twiggy, Walker, Wendy, Hugh and Apollo
Thank you for your advices, they really helped me clear my misunderstandings!!

IT REALLY HELPS. I am stuck at the stage where Tom Nook wants a KK Slider concert, but since I don't talk to villagers my town rating is not enough. Thank you thank you thank you

Just to manage your expectations, Animal Crossing is a sim game focused mostly on building up a town (in this case, island) from scratch into a bustling community day to day according to your own pace. Try not to compare or liken it to Pocket Camp because they are worlds apart and very very different from each other. Think more like The Sims but with animals instead of people or the Harvest Moon series without the farming aspect.

I noted the games you mentioned you played are all adventure games with storylines and goals and you’ve played them all until completion. There isn’t such a thing in Animal Crossing. You can never really beat or complete this game. There’s a bit of a story in this iteration but not much and you still mostly shape your own island’s story or mythos if you have a theme and lore. It’s mostly sandbox so it’s really very slow and you really can’t measure progress as it doesn’t really have levels. Also, just to manage your expectations again, this game is heavily heavily based on RNG. This iteration already gave us a lot more control compared to previous versions with terraforming and island hopping but it’s still a sim game rooted on a lot of RNG. Given this, you might want to relax yourself a little when it comes to playing. There are gonna be villagers you won’t like. They may be your starters or they can move in after. But it’s always gonna happen. The first camper for example, is a forced move in. You’d have to move in whoever shows up in your campsite first. There’s no way around it. You can’t not do it or you won’t progress. You can reset again if you don’t like but that’s not advisable because you’ll lose all your progress and will have to start over. So you’d have to be more accepting of villagers. Sometimes, a villager can win you over. Some villagers you hate may eventually be your bestie in the future. Some you will really hate and you’d have no choice but wait for them to go. Then they go and you miss them because there’s no one to antagonize anymore. It’s all these things that make the game fun. Again, this is a life sim game. We can’t always control it how we want so sometimes we have to go with the flow and enjoy it even some parts are horrible. ;) In terms of decorating, it’s also RNG so you can only decorate with stuff you will obtain early on from the game. You can trade for some if you’re looking for something specific that you don’t have yet or you can patiently wait and see your island develop from a literal wasteland to an aesthetic paradise. It’s your call, work at your own pace.

With those things out of the way, maybe you can see the game with fresher set of eyes. As for the fishing and bug catching, it’s super easy once you get the hang of it. For fishing, just listen to the sound and pull when the fish bites. For bug catching just try to not scare them all away by moving too fast. For the tools breaking, as everyone said just progress your game enough to get your hands on better tools recipes. Same for the inventory in your pocket and your house. As you progress you’ll be able to avail more inventory space. Just play and play and play without “missions” in mind and you’ll naturally progress in the game. You said you didn’t touch it for four months and it’s still the same. This is true because you will only slowly unlock things as you play. You don’t need to have everything at once. Like golden tools etc. If you play animal crossing trying to consume everything at once you won’t enjoy the game, it’ll just stress you out. Take your time and enjoy life in your island, and you’ll barely feel any effort at all and the next thing you know you’ve been completing achievements and milestones unknowingly. That’s really the core of animal crossing. Everything else is extra. ;)

Good luck and I hope you discover the joy in this game. :)
