almost every island ive seen are similar in some way or another. they are all either cottage/ nature core or the usual zen stuff. what are some island themes that haven't been done before?

To be honest I think most island themes have all been done before, it's just some are waaaaaay more popular than others like cottagecore and elegantcore especially now that the castle furniture set exists. Those two themes seem to be everywhere at the moment, especially on social media from popular ACNH social media accounts. However I love seeing the less popular themes such as desertcore where the island is completely flattened, covered in sand and then makes great use of the Moroccan furniture, the new decorative pots and various new plants that we can eventually buy from HHP.

It's been done, but very uncommon...

Ancient lost cities
Abandoned facility/base
Post-apocalyptic island
The whole island is a crime scene
Swamp
i'm actually doing a swamp theme on my island ! however it has a lot of touches from other themes like traditional japenese, farmcore, etc

I dunno how common it is but I make currently an acient greek town with some influence from ancient rom just because there are not enough items. It's some sort of ruins but also with temples and stuff. I think there are really some less used themes but in one way or another they were done before.
I mean you could even make a gym island if you want lol

I'm doing farm core for mine, when I look for inspo on Pinterest, there's not a lot of them 😓 also I haven't finish my island yet lol

I'm not sure if I'm correct or not, but I'm assuming holiday themed islands could also be pretty uncommon if that counts.

With something like 35 million copies of the game (or is it more now?) out there, probably everything has been done. When I was trading more, I saw a big variety. The post-apocalyptic city ones are interesting to me, because I haven't seen many and they look hard to do.

Honestly, just pick a theme you're passionate about no matter how popular it is. Like others have said, you'll be hard pressed to find a theme that hasn't been tried and uploaded to the dream library yet. But you can still make something that's wholly unique and your own by picking something you really care about and putting your own spin on it.

This one may sound weird but the theme I picked for both of my islands is "Simple" meaning that my islands are random with whatever items I put on my island that fits my personality. I don't really like going with most themes that people do so I figured that I would do my island based off of my personality. Like based off of my favorite movies, games, and something I like in real life. Yes it sounds generic and simple, but that is the whole point of what I was going for when making both of my islands and I'm proud of it.

There are 38.5 million copies of Animal Crossing New Horizons sold. It's hard to find something that has never been done, but some things are done more often than others.

I once stumbled across a war themed island that had gnomes and aliens fighting each other, with various areas being occupied by one or the other and areas in between where clashes were currently happening. I thought that was incredibly unique and well done.

I also saw a part of an island where everything was made to look like a huge landscape in miniature that looked like it went on and on into the distance. To create the sense of things being far away they used perspective. They had dog houses turned backwards to look like tiny houses, hedges made to look like entire forests, and throwback containers set along tiny custom designed railroad tracks. They also had some normal island stuff in the foreground to contrast with.

Try to think what your interests are and what things inspire you and go with that. I like reading fantasy and fairy tales, so I have a theme based around that. Align it with something you are interested and add little touches that are meaningful to you personally. It's a game, so have fun with it.

if I was doing unique theme, I would do a potato island. Potatoes everywhere. But not farmyard potatoes, independent potatoes. with their own towns and homes and everything else villagers would have. Also abduction zones, where they get put in bags and sent away, after they lived their best life. But they are potatoes.

like so if you want a theme no one has done, it has to be pretty out there and seemingly impossible. (Like where do I get potato furniture?)

My theme is a bit diffuse but I have a gothic area, a gyaru area, a secret forest and a concert hall. Instead of thinking in terms of "cores" I instead themed areas based on what they were.

I think it's pretty rare to style your town like the original animal crossing, three tiers of level and spread out housing and such! I know a youtuber does it, he even has a custom path that imitates the stone from that time.

I'm not sure if I'm correct or not, but I'm assuming holiday themed islands could also be pretty uncommon if that counts.
I've seen quite a few of those actually! There's some tours on youtube of christmas themed islands.

I want to see someone do an African theme with the baobab trees
YES! I'm surprised I haven't seen any before. They must be out there but I haven't seen a full island like that at all.

I'm also somewhat surprised that I haven't seen a hell themed island before? With all the spooky and fire items and custom paths this could be possible I feel? The ones I have seen were more like a spooky halloween town, but I'm more imagining it looking like the inside of a volcano or something.
