I got my switch christmas 2019 and didn't use it til acnh came out in march of 2020. About 6 months in I started having joycon drift and sent them to be fixed. I haven't had any other issues until recently. Now my joycons constantly lose connection and by constantly I mean every few minutes. If it matters I play handheld mode so the joycons stay on the switch. Rarely I play tv mode and I use the the joycon grip that came with the switch(never use the joycons separately). I looked online for ways to fix this and it said update the system and restart the system which I have done. I also went under the controller tab and checked connection there. Nothing is working. All the time my character will just stop moving and eventually I get the screen that says to push the l and r buttons to reconnect and eventually the press a to continue comes up but its never long before it happens again. I don't know if this is part of the joycon drift issues or something else. And I thought about buying new joycons even though I really don't need to spend that money right now but Idk if that will fix it. For all I know it's a system issue not a joycon issue. Has anyone here had this issue? Any ideas how to fix it? Thanks

Have you also updated the joycons? I'm not super familiar with this issue (though I have had my joycons randomly disconnect after my left one developed drift) and it seems like maybe their software is not up to snuff. After updating your system you should always update your joycons, which is really, really easy to forget to do.

Just to add on what Michael wrote above, the Joycons had a firmware update last March 2022. But you had to manually do it (even I didn't know it was a thing). Try it and perhaps it might fix the issue. Here's how to update the Joycons:

From the Home menu, choose 'System Settings'.
Then choose 'Controllers and Sensors'.
Scroll down to 'Update Controllers', select it, and let the Switch do the update.

Let us know if there's any improvement.

Ahhh my joy cons do the exact same thing! I don’t think I’ve ever manually updated it before though, so I’m also going to try out that method Rosch mentioned. I noticed that my joycons disconnect more often when I play ACNH compared to when I play other games, which is why I’ve been avoiding it recently.

I personally had no idea that this was a thing! Good thing I opened the thread hahaha. My joycons are around the same age, I’ve had a pretty good run with mine but there are months on end where I don’t use them which for some reason seems to cause an issue when I use them again for the first time in a while. I mean, last week I picked up my switch for the first time in a long while (2-3 months I think??). Anyway, I had to do a soft reset on my switch to get it and the joycons to function again. I’m not sure why this is, but it happens every time I have a break. I checked for dust and things like that, didn’t see any such issues.

So long story short, if all else fails- try a soft reset with the joycons attached and see if that helps.

I forgot about the updating joy cons as well! It's easily forgettable.
My first instinct would be to try that. If not, do the other process.
