Looking for your Smug Villager Recommendations

For context, I invited Zell from a Mystery Island two or three weeks ago. I really like his character and house designs. However, I feel as though I'm not clicking with him as I expected to. He has ended up giving off a vibe of being "that person in high school who is really smart, sits in the back of the classroom, and is loved by all the teachers but is really a big bully to other students." Once I obtain his photo, I will let him move onto his next adventure.

Now, Lopez is also another smug villager that I am now considering only cycling because I'm expecting him to give off the same vibe as Zell does, albeit looking like a gazelle. I've also been recommended Tex, and I quite like his facial design, though I am not ready to handle his house yet (the thought of winter coming terrifies me ).

My island doesn't have any particular theme -- I decorate villagers' yards based on their hobby, house exterior, and/or career aspiration. The rest of my island is public attractions for all inhabitants to enjoy (e.g. art auction, outdoor classroom, etc.)

As for other residents, I don't have a particular theme either. For now, I'm only considering Agnes, Flora, and Judy as permanent residents, though this may change in the future. XD

Who do you think are smug villagers that I would vibe with, and why? I appreciate your thoughts and time that you put into your responses. Thanks in advance!

I really like having Keaton on my island. He‘s like a guy on the high school football team that is admired for his good looks rather than his actual skill. His One true love is his car.

Hans is also pretty neat. I imagine he’s an older distinguished gentleman who enjoys coffee in the morning and tea in the evening.

Ken is also really neat

I don't know what are your interests in character types are but if you like "scraggy rocker that thinks he's hot-**** but is just a doofus" Kyle is your boy. If you like "smooth talking cool dude" Eugene definitely gives me that kind of vibe.

Kyle's home is more music based with many different instruments, gives it a "garage band" feel. I decorate his yard based on that (trash bags, music equipment and weeds). Eugene has a detective office as a home, so he's more in the lines of analytic action hero (still figuring out how to decorate his yard beyond having a bar nearby to solve crimes at). Both are great smugs. Would recommend trying them out if either sound to be up your alley.

I feel like maybe if you didn’t really click with a classy/ cool design like sell, maybe someone a little more goofy or cute might work instead?

I think he is pretty unpopular, but I really love Graham. I find him adorable and for me at least, I can work with the smug personality if it is him.

I will say, my husband has both zell and Lopez, and I find I am more attached to Lopez. I don’t know what it is about them, since like you said they are pretty similar designs. Maybe it is that Lopez has a more warm color palette, or his education hobby, which has him frequently sitting outside reading.

pietro is another good one for being totally different from zell’s ‘cool’ style.

I loved Eugene. I think of him as "budget Raymond" because they have an extremely similar office-style house. Eugene was a rare soul that had really cute interactions with other villagers. He wasn't so over the top that be bothered anyone. He had a cute relationship with Mint (snooty) and I loved to watch them interact. He's not on many people's dreamie lists so he's probably easy to find. If I were to bring in another smug, I'd bring Eugene back!

That’s odd...I see Zell more as the well-defined hedge fund manager. I just really like the deer.

If you don’t want a smug deer I’d suggest Shep. He’s pretty cool and it’s pretty funny when he wears glasses (which is often because he has the education hobby).

My recommendation is Ken. He has a super cool design (he's a ninja chicken) and has an awesome Japanese/zen-style house exterior, one of the prettiest houses I've seen.

Keaton has really nice markings! Definitely one of my favourite eagle villagers. And you're right, he does give off that vibe. XD

I'm surprised that I like Hans' design, since the gorillas don't typically appeal to me. :3

Eugene's greaser vibe is really unique, and I like it! I'm surprised that his interior looks like an office... not what I would immediately associate with a greaser.

I do tend towards villagers with the music hobby. Kyle looks super chill -- I especially like his eye design!

Ah, so Eugene's interior design is more of a homage to the era, not so much directly related to him being designed after a greaser. That makes a lot more sense now.

I'll have to take a pass at Pietro due to my irrational fear of clowns. Poor Pietro -- people either love him or don't.

Graham was my forced smug villager. I didn't really like him at first, but over time, I found him to be really adorable. I miss having my little comp sci nerd on my island. I ruined his interior with bugs, though. XD

I'm a bit disappointed in myself for not vibing with Zell. I love the deer designs in general. XD

Marshal is adorable! My S/O thinks I would like him as well. XD Nobody's mentioned Kidd or Colton yet, and I quite like them, so they'll be on my list to look out for as well.

He has the education hobby & wants to be a professor in the future, so my headcanon of him on my island is that he's a literature-lover who likes talking in metaphors (which makes him look way cooler), lol. His demeanor seems like he's loved by many, and he also likes reciprocating friendly vibes! He's basically a "cool cat" but like,,, a dog. Even his house is so inviting, it's a cottage/cabin that looks comfy inside. Also, he's probably a people-person (because sheepdogs are good at leading sheep or something like that lol). He's probably the kind to say hi to everyone even if you've only interacted once.

I pretty much rambled on about Shep, but I have him on my island and I just adore him so much Nevertheless, I wish you luck in your search for a smug to connect with!!

edit: OH I almost forgot Kidd! I had him in ACNL and he was one of my absolute favorites ❤ He looks like a cool kid who can be friends with everyone but is absolutely shy to talk to people. Ahhh i love him too.

I can recommend Colton.I had him for a long time in New Leaf and he recently moved to my NH island.Fortunately he's translated well to New Horizons and he might even have a better house now.He's just as goofy and witty as he was in New Leaf.

can i do the opposite of a recommendation?? an uncommendation??? do NOT get Chops i am telling u right now the Chops stans do no want to hear this but i dislike that dude!!! will never recommend him. two island resets in a ROW he was my first camper & i had to invite him. do u understand the disappointment and the defeat i felt??? 0/10 his ONLY redeeming qualities r the fact that pig villagers have rly precious ears that flop when they walk and the fact that there is inevitably someone out there who says this villager is their fav of all time.

jokes aside, looking at the 3 villagers u want to keep as permanent friends id have to say i think Kidd or Julian will go nicely with the lovely lasses. i would have recommended only one of these dudes but i think they're kinda on equal footing: they both have lovely house exteriors that can go with one of those 3 villagers nicely and they both LOOK like they'd fit in with ur villagers. id have to say i like Kidd a bit more but this is my purple bias showing so.
