@ mentions / pings

hi!
I was wondering why this forum doesn't have @ mentions / pings. I know a couple other forums run on vbulletin that have the ping function where you just @username and the person gets notified.

I think that'd be really convenient to have on here, and it'd make communication a lot easier.
Or maybe quoting someone would give you a notification.

It'd be cool in those basement threads where you have to interact with the user above you. So you just ping the person so they can see what you said.

Remember that leaving a like on someone's post will notify them, so sometimes that works, but yeah, it would be great to have this feature or something similar.

Yeah but if you pinged someone in a specific post, then they'd automatically be directed to the post they were pinged in.
Whereas with a like, they'd only be redirected to their post rather than yours.

I think it's especially useful in like debates or shops because posts can easily get lost

I actually don't even like getting notifications here that someone liked my post. I always think it's a PM

I think it's because vBulletin doesn't usually have a mention system. They do have a service where you can tag people, but it has to be paid for.

I think if the site gets enough ad revenue, then maybe eventually this can be bought or something similar can be put in place?
For now it's just best to "like" the persons post and hope they'll see your reply.

I hate VBulletin and similar services. You pay for the site with limited options and then you have to pay for plugins and updates. Anyway, thanks to you I found myself a nice, free and opensource plugin for my own uses that does a similar job. Won't test it today.

Anyway, yeah, if Jeremy wishes to pay that $79.95, this would be a good feature unless it got annoying.

Personally i've never made a site with vBulletin but i've heard it is a pain. It's simple enough though

I would love to see this added as a feature! Before I knew it wasn't a thing I accidentally used it in a couple of my replies lol. Quoting is fine, but I like the clean look of just using the @username tag and then replying that way

Prevents a lot of duplication, but doesn't really work for replying to old posts in a thread... not that people do that much. Nested quotes are a pain to do on here, but I can understand why they aren't automatically inserted. Anyone who's ever used the private messaging system knows it quickly gets out of hand.

I'd honestly love a ping system. I don't want to subscribe to every thread I post to, and half the time, people reply to me and I don't notice until hours or days later. It'd be nice if I got a notification if someone quoted me or pinged me.
