Also, it's not fair for the bidders. We automatically assume he's already in boxes so people start bidding high to get him first.

Yep. This thread is pretty misleading.
The reason why people lurk cycling threads is in hopes for the popular ones like: Merengue, Julian, Marshal, Lolly, ect.

Just to clarify, we've never intended a "must be in boxes" rule or anything like that, but looking at the Rules thread we can see how it might have been assumed. So the wording has been updated now to be more clear. As long as the villager is in your town, it's fair game. Of course, you should probably inform everyone in your post if you think it might be a while, so the buyers can make their own discretion whether to bid or purchase.
