Opinions on ads/adblock?

YouTube ads have gotten terrible lately. There's every chance that your "ad" is just someone else's 10 minute long video. That and the whole "video will play after the ads" thing they've started doing.
yeah i def have it off there. i'd be fine if they had around the site as not part of videos but can i enjoy my music in peace ty

I use adblock and it the amount of people who don't always surprises me. It makes webpages much cleaner and easier to navigate and I don't have to worry about any maleware. I do turn it off for websites I trust such as TBT. Also just to contribute in the only way I can to the site, eventhough it is hardly anything.

I guess I don't really think about it all that much, but I don't like seeing ads because I hate when they feel way too specific... like if I'm talking about something, and an advertisement shows up pertaining to that, then I get a little weirded out. I use adblocks, multiple in fact, because I don't want to see them. I feel bad because I'm denying some people their income (Like on Twitch.tv) a little bit but I just do what makes me feel comfortable in the end.

I use Adblock but some sites I do whitelist temporarily.

I don’t mind seeing a 5-second ad in a video, but when a video pop up ad appears and takes up my whole screen? Nope. Better to have those types of ads disabled to begin with.

Yeah I get creeped out by these ads that basically shows what you talked about 5 seconds ago or what you are craving, like I got these wayyy too often to think they are random man

I hate ads because I clicked one accidentally and it freakin' installed a malware without my consent.

This here is my primary issue with ads and is one of the primary reasons I use an ad block. People are terrible and they'll write malware into the code of their websites or advertisements.

i don’t mind ads - there’s some sites where there’s ads everywhere to the point where you can’t even get to the sites material and i have an issue with that. one or two ads on a page in a decent location (top or bottom or even on the side somewhere) is fine

wish youtube thought of that rather than putting em in actual videos lol....

I use adblock. I'll occasionally turn it off for small websites I want to support that only use ads that don't slow down the website, but I don't have enough sympathy for big corporations to care if they lose a fraction of a cent for their site to not be significantly harder to navigate.

i use adblock on my computer but i don't have anything for mobile devices. i hate ads tbh and think they're creepy

I don't use adblock, never have. Not because I don't want to, just can't be bothered. I have found a lot of cool things through ads lmao, but youtube ads are disgustingly annoying. I miss old youtube.

I always use adblock. I have no interest in whatever is being advertised and don't recall ever buying something solely because I've seen it in an ad, or if I have it has been an uncommon occurrence. I can see the argument for whitelisting certain websites you like or content creators you want to support and I'm cool with that, but other than that, ads are a nuisance I don't want to deal with. It's not even just benign annoyance either; as others have pointed out, some ads can install malware on your computer. No thank you.

I'm also not fond of our information being collected and sold just so the companies can target advertisement toward us individually. I don't want these people advertising to me in the first place, so the data aspect is just atrocious and I don't understand why some people are okay with it.

I don't mind ads if theyre subtle, but the worst ones are on youtube and recipe websites??? You can't even see the recipes if youre on mobile because the ads are just overbearing

also lewd ads, i dont wanna see that lol

I'm all for content-providers getting ad-revenue with responsibly placed ads.

Unfortunately, the state of things is such that blockers are nothing short of a necessity.

Also, the parties responsible for ad-overkill only have themselves to blame for things reaching this point. Blockers would never have needed to become so commonplace if the ads had been reasonable to begin with. So...at the end of the day, I feel bad for a handful of sites that try to have responsible advertisements in order to create revenue...but, that's an uphill battle. I can't be turning off my adblocker every time I feel slightly bad for one site or another...things are just too hectic out there.

I don't mind ads on websites that are on the side and not obstructing my view from the website. When stuff starts popping up and flashing at me it gets annoying :v Also, ads/ commercials when I'm watching TV or at the beginning of movies don't really bother me because that's just how TV is to me ;V Ads on youtube annoy me so much though and I'm not totally sure why because it's sort of like TV and that's how lots of you tubers make money, but in my mind I liked that Youtube wasn't TV, but ads have gotten ridiculous on youtube. Like i have seen videos with like 10 unskippable ads placed throughout the video, and at that point I don't even want to watch the video anymore :[

edit: Also, double ads that are unskippable during youtube videos have become a thing now and that's especially frustrating :/

I've used adblock for over a decade, and nobody can shame me into removing it.
Advertisement are made to manipulate your subconscious, and at this point we're already being followed everywhere from what we type, to what we say, to what part of a website we stay on the longest, every byte of data used to manipulate you and serve you ads, not to mention all the malware ads etc.
I'd rather pay a small amount to use something than see ads.
And yeah even the mics on our phones are listening, I can't count the amount of times I've just been having a conversation with someone, and then the next time I check my phone there's an ad for exactly what we were talking about despite me never having looked for said thing prior, there's plenty of proof already, but nobody seems to care, but I do.

And yeah even though I use adblock I still bought youtube premium to support the content creators, so they can shut it.

On the subject of youtube...I hate that there are ads that are super long. I've literally seen ads that interrupt a 20 minute youtube video, and then the ad is an hour and a half long...like a feature length movie about a product. WHAT?!?

Nothing is for free. We all need to make money to survive in this world, and advertising revenues allow websites and their staff to do just that. I don't fault the premise of advertising, but I do think that they can be extremely distracting when I'm trying to surf the web. And sometimes just downright inappropriate or disgusting!

I use AdBlock Plus all the time on my computer, but I don't have anything installed on my phone.

They aren't, everything is spying on you, from viewing habbits, to the microphones on your phone.
It's an open secret, and nobody cares..
It's also why all the people in big tech industries remove any and all webcams and mics, they don't want the same treatment they're dishing out, it's so disgusting.
And it's so obvious, but again nobody seems to care..
