Well over a month ago, I have moved Bones in through Amiibo and have been giving him 3 Non Native Fruits Wrapped in a bag ever since he was able to receive gifts and have yet to give me a photo. I have done this process with villagers that I have moved in from islands and/or campsite (non-amiibo) and got their photo way earlier than this.

To give an idea, Bones agreed to move in on December 13th. By estimation, probably got gifts by the 15-17th of that month. As you can see it has been well over a month.

Did something change, or does moving in villagers through Amiibo take longer to get their photos? Or am I just being so unlucky for some reason.

I feel the data miners would have discovered this while putting together the friendship point guide. Since the photo received is based on random chance once you reach a certain friendship level, I'd say it all comes down to luck.

In my second town, I adopted Poppi from someone, and later used an Amiibo for Carmen. Coincidentally, I got Poppi and Carmen's photo on the same day after gifting them 2-wrapped non-native fruits for a few weeks.

i never actually thought about this 🤔
i got judy through the campsite and stitches on an island then almost instantly got their photos (i TT of course)

but i got maple through an amiibo, i've had her a while now and have gifted her loads of furniture, clothes etc
and yet i never got her photo, i just bought it in the end

so maybe amiibo villagers do take longer to give their photos but that's a pretty weird thing, it should be the same whether they're amiibo or not

No, it has nothing to do with them being amiibos, you just have bad rng for that particular villager. Basically, whenever you get to best friend level with a villager and give them a gift, you have a small chance of getting their photo. (This counter resets after getting that villager’s photo.)
I got some amiibo villagers’ photos faster than my starter peppy’s photo (who was there for more than a month earlier)! c:

I'm of this opinion/experience as well. I'll take it one step further and suggest that once you know you're at the level in which they can potentially gift you a photo, then save scum (is that the right term?) until you get it. Way back in the day, I was waiting for photos from Rizzo and Cyrano, and I ended up getting both on the same day due to this trick.

Yep! I save scummed with Megan so I could get her photo before she moved out.

I'm not sure what you mean here for this trick..

What I tend to do is that once I know I was at max friendship, I save scum to get their photo when they’re sick. I know, it’s cruel of me, but it works. Because I know they will be in their house all day long and I don’t have to run around looking for them.

I had hoped we would have gotten Bianca for April’s Fool to get their photos, but that didn’t happen and I was a bit bummed out about that.

It's totally random- being an Amiibo has nothing to do with it (that'd be a totally bizarre thing for Nintendo to put effort into coding).

Personally, I get all my photos through the stack method- max their friendship through gifts (I like to give my villagers multiple clothing items, so that's how I do that part) then give them coconuts off a stack (with a full inventory otherwise) so they send me gifts in return. There's a slightly higher chance of getting a pic that way, last I checked, and I've gotten them all through it.

Also, "save scumming"? Is that a new term? I've literally never heard it... "resetting" is shorter to type, too. I'm confused.

No. Save scumming isnt a new term. It is just used in different gaming communities. Personally, I ran into it through Zelda and Pokemon, but it is probably older than that.

Weird, I've played games since I was a kid and have never heard of it. What a weird term 😕

It is a really weird term. I have no idea where it came from! 😆 I haven't really heard many people use it now.

EDIT: I had to look it up. Apparently it comes from the old roguelike community and it does have a reputation of being "cheaty" which is why the word "scummy" is used. Some old school Japanese RPGs practically required resetting for 100% completion because of RNG on really hard bosses.

As others have mentioned, it is most likely just unlucky rng. I don't recall the exact number of days, but I feel like there are some villagers who have given me their photo in around 4 weeks and others that have taken 2 months.
