Why do you guys (sorry for generalizing, it's just easier. No need to defend yourselves below) get annoyed when people ask for requests? Like, if someone politely asks you to draw something, you should respond/decline equally as politely. You should be happy people like your art and want to see things in your style. What's so bad about people politely and calmy asking for things?

I can understand why you'd be pissed and rude towards people who beg/demand instead of ask

Well I've never been asked to do a request so... I don't exactly know how it feels, but for artists who sell their work, it's like walking into a bake shop, all the cakes on display have a price tag on them, but you go to the baker and ask for one for free. No matter how politely you ask, it's still a rather rude thing to do, and while it's probably the most mature and respectful thing for the baker to wave you off nicely, it's understandable that they would get annoyed.

As for people who don't sell their art or even have an art shop, then it's justified a little. You don't know whether they'd be willing to do something for you out of the warmth of their heart or if they need a little compensation for the trouble, so it makes sense to request something, just to see if they'd be willing to do it. But still, it can tick some artists off, because to some asking for a request just out of the blue (without asking if they take requests first) makes it seem like you think you're entitled to some free art, which I'm sure isn't true, but some artists seem to take it that way.

And if they've stated that they take requests before... Well, then the artist is just being a *****.

I think a good survival guide to asking for requests would be: if they don't sell their art, ask if they take requests first, and if they do sell their art, just... Don't. If you must, ask if they'll take a sketch request or something, but still... Prepare to be yelled at.

It only gets annoying when the person doesnt ask politely or keeps bugging you about it. other than that, i'm honored. also i hate it when they keep complimenting you, hoping to get a freebie. I'll do it if i want to ya know. Ah man i remember when i was a ****ty artist and people just complimented me to get free stuff ;-; lol

I get asked a lot by random people from school. Usually they say "OMG! You're so good. Can you draw me?" Four times out of five they ask themselves to be drawn. I find their face uninteresting. First, you're not my friend, and I barely even know you. Second, you didn't even offer anything in return.

It's rude to just ask someone you don't know for a gift (art takes so much work) out of nowhere. I mean if someone invites you over to their house you don't just walk in and be like "nice sofa can I have that?"

Beardo, it seems like you just experienced something like this?
I'm not really sure what's going on, but the key is to always stay polite, of course!
I'm always happy when someone shows interest in my art and I really appreciate that!! :D
If someone requests free art from me and I can't draw it because I have no time, because I sell it, or whatever reason, I'd be still happy that someone shows his interest and I would apologize and decline, telling them the reason.

I think though that some artists already had plenty of bad experience piled up, and once they get asked for something without announcing a freebie event or something like that, they might act rude because of their bad experience.

I think since this is a Animal Crossing website, a forum for a game which has many young members, some of those might not fully understand how this kind of thing works! People who seem new to the whole art shop thing often get a bit overwhelmed and underprice, overprice, do not fill the form etc, and to the already experienced artist it might come off as ignorant which could lead to "didn't you read the rules?!, why is the price so low, are you trying to insult me?!, are you too blind to see the forms?! or they ignore the requester at all) etc.

If a kid sees those nice cute chibis, they might not fully understand the freebie event thing or what RLC is and just ask "hello, could you please draw my mayor, thank you" and this might come off as rude to the artist...
It seems to me like people OFTEN forget that this is an acnl forum. Here are little children, and why shouldn't they be? It's a game for children too!

Well, maybe that didn't even apply to what kind of answer you were searching for, but well idk I feel like I went off topic lol
sorry if I'm not helpful at all...

Thanks for all your responses. It was a friend off-forum who was pretty rude to me, but I was curious since I see her and so many other artists *****ing about people requesting stuff. Like, obviously you don't have to do it, but there's no need to get pissy about it.

It's probably a random moment. When I get art requests, I'm quite picky with the character I'm working with. I like characters that have this key appearance to them that catches my attention or something about them that is APPEALING. It also depends on what they're requesting, like if I really want to draw something decent and someone requests something silly like "draw a pen in a floating car", you'll be mad cause no?? I do decline orders kindly though but it all depends.

Well, I have an art thread here, just to show off my progress as a 3D artist, and I've received quite a few requests, surprisingly. I think, at least in the world of 3D art, a lot of time and effort is required, and I just can't keep up with all the requests. That's the only reason I'd ever get remotely frustrated.

art takes a lot of work and time. (especially depending on the artist) sometimes art is the only thing a artist has, like they have no job, it's their only source of income, why should they have to take hours upon hours of their time for you just because you complemented them, and get nothing in return?

They shouldn't

Its like how men try to convince women they owe them things (You know.. like doing the nasty nasty) when women have ABSOLUTELY NO REASON to agree upon those terms, they tell her she's pretty and expect her to jump right in his arms. Doesn't work like that. (This was a example, and not all men do this. First thing that popped into my head)

If you're good friends with a artist then it's understandable that they would draw you something for free, I draw stuff for my friends all the time just because it's my way of showing them I love them. But if someone I don't know came up to me and asked me to draw them something, I would most likely say no.I don't owe them anything, they're not my friend, and I have no reason to.

Art is worth a lot of money and asking a artist out of the blue for free art is rude and disrespectful. I don't know if you're a artist, but if you were then you might understand? Idk

depends on the person as well. If they enjoy it, then sure they might do it for free, but I don't usually. Crowding them with work isn't cool either. Normally at the beginning of a artist's career they might draw stuff for free, but as time goes on and they realize how much time they've had taken from them for free commissions is ridiculous and will realize that they should charge their art

Depends on the person asking and the person being asked.

To the person asking, it's their first time asking. To the person being asked, it's their millionth time being asked.

If someone asks politely and isn't the type of "I won't take no for an answer!" or "I am entitled to free art." type of people, then the artist should show some politeness in declining. Some artists might find it insulting that someone would ask for freebies, as if the artist isn't good enough for money or whatever exchange.

Ugh gosh, it's kinda annoying.
I draw in the library a lot during my breaks at school, and people will walk past and be like "OMG its the girl from Pokemons your so good can you draw a XYZ" and it's annoying because I don't know them, I never will know them, and I can't be bothered. I agree, there are young kids on this site, but it happens everywhere.
I personally deny requests due to the fact that I have a shop, and drawing a request requires the same effort as a paid piece, and so I'd rather do that.
I do a freebie thread when I giveaway art and take requests, because I actually want to draw requests then :3

It gets annoying when they tell you that you are amazing and try to butter you up so you will draw for them. Or when you own a shop and they are asking for freebies. You gotta pay like everyone else or when you request we can work a deal out. It just goes with, I am busy, I have a life, I cant drop everything to do something cause they said I like your art. It takes time, and for some mediums, it can cost money. You gotta be like everyone else, fill the forum out and such.

I dont really get mad, I will warn them that I suck at Drawing OCs and such so -

as long as im getting paid ill draw whtvr u want xD

Well, all artists have different views on their art due to multiple things. Some people see their art as very valuable so they put prices on it, some people use their art as a source of income, some people do it for extra money and some people draw for fun so it doesn't matter for them much. I personally don't think my art has any value since it's not as good as other artists, so I do requests and I have fun with them. People here would get frustrated cause it's like they're asking for (like a lot of people above said) something that's clearly priced for free.
