Spirited Away is definitely my favorite so far, I think because it is similar to Alice in Wonderland which is one of my other favorite stories. I enjoy the magical elements. The music by Joe Hisashi always transports me. I saw the video of the stage play recently, in the movie theater, and as soon as the music started I felt so much nostalgia and felt so swept into the world of this magical bathhouse. I also really enjoyed how they re created a lot of the spirits with innovative puppets!
I feel a little ashamed that I haven't seen some other classic Ghibli movies, although I have gotten copies of all of them.. but it's don't know why I haven't made time for them yet! Like I have this feeling I'll really enjoy Nausicaa but I haven't watched it yet. Laputa Castle in the Sky as well.
I have seen: (just in the order I remember watching them)
Mononoke Hime
Grave of the Fireflies
Spirited Away
Ponyo
Howl's Moving Castle
My Neighbor Totoro
Kiki's Delivery Service
The Secret World of Arietty
The Wind Rises
From Up on Poppy Hill
Boy and the Heron
Honorable mentions- Miyazaki documentaries
The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness
Never Ending Man
10 Years with Hayao Miyazaki
He's kind of a fun grouchy old man and it's so interesting to watch him talk about animation and life, and to see the other animators too!
Want to see (in order of desire)
Whisper of the Heart
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Laputa Castle in the Sky
Only Yesterday
I Can Hear the Sea (Ocean Waves)
Tales from Earthsea
Princess Kaguya
Pompoko
When Marnie was There
But eventually I hope to watch all the others too for completeness
Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro
Porco Rosso
My Neighbors the Yamadas
The Cat Returns
Earwig and the Witch
I wish I had more merch. I feel like they're so well known in Japan but since it's less so here in the US, you can only find merch for some of the more popular movies. My boyfriend has a few stuffed Totoros for his daughter, but I don't have a need for morestuffies in my life. I almost bought a beautiful stained glass style puzzle for spirited away, but didn't get around to it. I really want the moving Howl castle, but it's harder to get unless you're in Japan.
My brother did buy me a random filmstrip piece when he went to the Ghibli museum in Japan. When I visited Japan, the museum wasn't open yet. I'd love to go back and get more merch
I love that the movies are complex in theme, that they feature strong female characters very often, that the animation is still hand drawn and done with such care and beauty. And the music! Joe Hisashi definitely makes so many of these films so memorable. And I'm drawn to the fairy tales, the romance, and the magic/fantasy. My boyfriend loves that it doesn't fall into the traditional Disney mold of good guys/bad guys and princesses and witches, but that all the characters are involved in complex struggles and there isn't always a clear antagonist or bad guy.
