Tarot

@mayortiffany I've done several readings on commission myself, it's definitely a neat skill to make even a few bucks on.

As far as fandom decks being disrespectful, not really. The tarot deck is the precursor to modern playing cards. Swords became spades, cups became hearts, etc and the major arcana were eliminated. There were games played with tarot cards but good luck finding much info on them unfortunately. It's unknown when and where exactly playing cards began being used for divination. I'd probably never give someone a reading using a fandom deck if they were paying me, because usually people paying for readings have something serious they're trying to sort out and I wouldn't want to come off as not taking their issue seriously enough, but that's just me, and there's absolutely nothing wrong or offensive about fandom decks, I'd say doubly so if it's a deck from a series that was inspired by tarot cards in the first place (i.e., the Jojo deck or the Persona decks)

@ReanimatedSorceress

That makes sense! Thanks for telling me more about that. I can see where it would be potentially inappropriate to use fandom decks for a paid commission, but it makes me a lot less wary about potentially purchasing one in the future for personal use.

No problem, if you have any other questions I don't mind~

But yeah, it really comes down the person the reading is for. Like, if someone from this forum asked me for a reading and I had an Animal Crossing deck, you bet I'd use it! But in a general sense, if I had such a deck, I'd avoid using it in those situations unless someone requested I use it.

Do you have a favorite card or deck? Feel free to discuss Tarot in depth if you wish as well. I'm no master but I'll answer what I can. I've been reading for a little over two years.

Do note this is not a thread about religion or your inherent spiritual practices. This is simply about Tarot.

While I personally do not have my own (yet hehe) I do know someone who has been doing tarot for 10 years and uses so many decks! She has the lighter energy decks consisting of fairy decks, angels, and flowers, plus Doreen Virtue decks. She has the traditional Rider deck as well. Then she has the heavier energy decks consisting of Halloween themed decks or the cute gothic type. She has very cool nature decks and iirc, some type of map themed deck too!

I'm currently learning how to feel the difference in energy and tried playing with my first deck (I'm very cautious with how I handle the cards haha) I think it was the Chocolate Lovers deck. Shaped as small hearts with chocolate and candy on them. Very cute! I personally have a lot of training to do before I try to get my own deck but if or when I do, I have my eye on some decks that I find to be very cute! I think the Clow Cards from "Cardcaptor Sakura" would make an awesome tarot deck!

I guess if I had to choose a tarot card personally, it might have to be the Death card since I'm a Scorpio 😂 Though, my favorite tarot card is the Magician or the Ace of Cups! Would love a jacket or shirt of it!

@ReanimatedSorceress I remembered this thread and figured you would be interested in seeing a tarot deck based on Jane Austen works.

This special set combines the 22 Major and 56 Minor Arcana characters from tarot into a 53-card deck and interprets them through the world of Jane Austen.

I am not an avid tarot card practitioner or have done any attempt at divination but I like the designs on this tarot deck as well as Jane Austen works especially Pride and Prejudice. Another plus point is that the deck doubles as a playing card deck.

Let me know if you would like me to share images of the cards and provide descriptions 🙂

These are very pretty! I have a different Austen deck, but I think I like the artwork on yours as well.

I'm gonna be honest, I want to get into it but I don't want to offend people by getting the wrong cards or somethin. If I'm going to do it, I want to do it respectfully so people don't think I'm doing it cause 'oh fun quirky'.

I am really interested in it thou and have been for years. But I don't even know where to start nor do I have any backround info on it, so I don't want to start blindly. Y'alls got any tips?

There really are no 'wrong cards'. I'd say to find a deck that interests you, because something you like and that appeals to you will be easier to work with than something basic you got because you think you should.

Pretty much every deck comes with an LWB - little white book. It gives a basic overview on the cards, what the arcanas are, and a short bit on each card's meaning, both upright and reversed. It will usually have simple layouts you can try.

Playing with them is the best way I've found to get comfortable with a deck. Take 1 card a day and just study it works, too. You'll discover little things in the artwork and get a sense of what the card is portraying. It might match the LWB, it might be different. That's okay.

You might find a straightforward deck to work with, but if that fun, colorful, quirky deck speaks to you, go for it! My favorite decks to use are a cartoonish Halloween one, a small deck of Wonderland images in the Tenniel style, and a b&w, line-drawn Hello Kitty deck.

Anyone else have a Mucha deck? Alfonse Mucha's art style has always reminded me of tarot cards, I was so excited to see there was a deck inspired by him, featuring his original art.

I've been reading for well over a decade, I really love the Tarot and I'm happy to try to help any newbies. :) I still really want an Animal Crossing deck one day, it would be amazing haha.

EDIT: I didn't mean to sound like I was bragging, sorry! I'm just excited that there's a Tarot thread.

There's no "wrong cards" to start with! A lot of decks with the Rider-Waite-Smith (RWS) system or are inspired by it, so getting the original RWS or something that draws on it more closely is probably a good place to start. What kind of decks do you have in mind?

The best place to start is to get yourself a deck that you like and start reading. There's lots of good beginner's resources. Aecletic Tarot and Little Red Tarot (I'm not sure if we're allowed to include links?) have sections explaining the basic meanings of each card. You can use spreads (like... card layouts) to do some simple readings. There are lots of different learning styles so you should pick something that suits you, I can explain a bit more if you'd like.

You also don't have to read about the future or view it as a spiritual thing at all. Lots of people use it more to get insight into their own psychology or just like the symbology.

Is that the Lo Scarabeo (I think) one? Because if it's like their other artist decks (Botticelli, Bosch, etc.) then it might be more artwork based on his original works rather than straight-up the originals. But still cool!

Ahh! I adore tarot, got into it in the past year when recovering from a tumour, it felt like a queer friendly spiritual practice that i could really relate to. That said, I mostly just use it for self-counselling when my brain is feeling rough, it's a good way to have conversations with yourself over what's happening in your life/the world.
Also seconding the recommendation of Little Red Tarot, the decks stocked there are so varied and lovely and there's lots of free resources or resources available on a sliding scale.
My current favourite go to deck is Mesquite, it's v calm and gentle. 🌱
I'm actually designing a deck at the moment but it's pretty slow going due to my health (and distracting games that won't be mentioned) >>

i really wanna go into tarot vv i got a tarot reading by my friend once and it was super interesting ! i had a mock deck from spirit halloween lmao but i didnt want to use it because i had no connection to it

Just got this today and thought I'd share.

It may end up being more of a collectible deck, but I will play around with it first.

The suits are changed to candles (wands), presents (pentacles), needles (swords), and potions (cups).

I've only just recently started getting into tarot but I love it!! I mostly use the wild unknown deck and the illustrations are honestly gorgeous but I've just recently started also using the crow tarot deck

I'm actually considering getting a tarot card tattoo and I'm leaning towards the moon card atm but the six of wands is one of my favourite cards :)

(as a side note: if anyone would ever like a free tarot reading I'd be more than happy to do one for you!! just want to get some more practice reading for people that aren't myself haha)

Hello! I'm between the rough draft and final draft on my tarot deck, I was wondering if anyone would be happy to PM about it with me to see what's working/not working with it? Would vvv much appreciate it 💕

I’ve been practicing tarot professionally for around two years now? I like the way it’s a psychological tool as much as a spiritual one. The cards are world-based, so the relatability between our lives and natural situations and obstacles makes readings very simple and straightforward when you know what you’re doing.

Big fan of it, I own several oracle decks alongside my tarot deck.

I would love to help out with this!! just send me a message :)

I have always found tarot cards to be really interesting, I'm no good at doing readings my self but I wish that I could though.
